Steve mentions that he was co-captain of the high school swim team and was a certified lifeguard for three years. This is the first time Steve's original backstory is mentioned in the show (outside of interviews). Steve was supposed to be a swimmer instead of a basketball player in season 1. Joe Keery, the actor who plays Steve, even trained and dieted to have a swimmer's body for the show. The swimmer story line was eventually dropped, and he was made a basketball player instead.
When the gang tries to entice Suzie to help them, they vaguely describe a 16-bit console for Dustin. She is excited because most consumer computers were still 8-bit at this time. Suzie's computer is actually the Amiga 1000, a 16-bit computer that was considered quite advanced for home use in 1986.
The character Eden is styled to look exactly like Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club, albeit with the addition of some costume jewellery.
As the older teens are boarding the boat and leaving the young gang behind, Dustin asks "who put her in charge?" Which is a famous line from Aliens
This episode takes place from March 25 to March 26, 1986.
