The Legend of Sorrow Creek (2007) Poster

Stephen Walker: Daniel Fields

Quotes

  • Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Mr. Fields, what *do* you know about Sorrow Creek?

Daniel Fields : Well I was kind of surprised to get your call this morning. I just thought that you'd know more than I would being from the area and all.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Every child born to a woman in this part of the country has a granddaddy who tells him stories to keep him from wandering into the woods. Local myths and legends

    [sighs]

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : we need to know the truth.

Daniel Fields : Well Sergeant, the truth is that no one really knows what happened in Sorrow Creek. You know families started to flee as early as a decade after its first founding in 1750, and stories of insanity, suicide and murder, they continued on until the town was fully abandoned in 1899.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : The entire town abandoned, just like that?

Daniel Fields : Yeah, nine families left all that they owned, all in one day. So they'd rather leave everything behind instead of spending another night in these woods.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : And since then?

Daniel Fields : Since then, a small salvaging company from a town nearby started hauling out most of the useful building materials sometime in the '20s. However that was halted when a four-man crew never returned home one night.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Well what happened to them?

Daniel Fields : Three were never found again, the fourth, he was found dead on the edge of town, bled to death. Most figured he was mauled by a bear.

    Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Most?

Daniel Fields : His back was torn to pieces in 71 places. Rest of his body however, wasn't even touched.

  • Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Does anyone have an explanation for these things?

Daniel Fields : Depends on who you're asking.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : I'm asking *you*, Mr. Fields.

Daniel Fields : Some people believe Sorrow Creek was founded on the very spot where the devil fell through the earth on his way to Hell.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Is that what you believe?

Daniel Fields : It's as good as any explanation for what's happened here.

  • Daniel Fields : Sergeant Leerhsen, why are we here? Why did you ask me to come here?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : [hands him a folder]  We found her body here last Thursday, she was found hanging in a tree over that way, figured an animal got to her and dragged her over here. She came out with her sister and a couple friends to stay at the family cottage on the lake about a half hour walk away from here. I started looking for them when it burnt down last weekend, there's still no sign of the others, I can't figure out why she did it.

Daniel Fields : She did this to herself?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Other than what the animals already did, there were no other marks on her body, there's no sign of a struggle, no indication she didn't want to be hanged.

Daniel Fields : But her eyes...

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Well we found the knife by the tree where she'd hanged herself. Her prints were all over it.

Daniel Fields : Well what about the others?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Coroner's found traces of her sister's blood all over her clothes and some of the others as well.

Daniel Fields : Do you think she did something to them?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Best we got. It just doesn't add up.

  • Daniel Fields : Sergeant Leerhsen?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Mr. Fields.

    Daniel Fields : Daniel's fine.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Jonas Leerhsen. I really appreciate you driving all the way out here to meet with me. Folks at the university said that you're the man to talk to.

Daniel Fields : It's no problem. Actually it's rare that my research comes in handy. Are the ruins far from here?

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Down the trail a ways, come on. So, what exactly do you study, Mr. Fields?

Daniel Fields : Daniel. Writing a sociology doctrine on the impact of local superstitions in abandoned communities.

Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Ghost towns.

Daniel Fields : Yes yes, ghost towns.

  • Sheriff Jonas Leerhsen : Mr. Fields, what can you tell me about Isabelle Carter?

Daniel Fields : Well Isabelle and her husband were one of the last families to live in Sorrow Creek before it was abandoned. You know, Thomas, her husband, was a very deep religious man. Some say that when Isabelle started talking about strange spirits coming to her from the woods, he cut her eyes out for having laid them upon the devil. He then hung her as a heretic for burning down their cottage right to the ground, and then disappearing off into these woods forever.
