The Indian Che Guevara Deserves A Better Tribute
Libertas_730 November 2019
Friend: What's your plan for the weekend? Me: Oh, I'm going to watch George Reddy movie Friend: George Reddy?! Who's he?

This conversation took me back to the time when I asked the same question to my dad. 12 years ago, my teacher asked me to write an essay on the topic "Brave Hearts" and I instantly knew what my pick was going to be - the synonym of bravery, the real hero, Mr. Bhagat Singh. After reading his story in detail, I was so deeply disturbed and saddened by his early death. I wished he had lived longer. I started imagining the scenarios - 'what if he didn't die then?' 'what might have happened, if he escaped when he had the chance, instead of staying back, raising slogans and inspiring others?' I shared this thought with my dad, who listened to me very calmly and asked me this - "Do you think the Britishers succeeded in silencing him by executing him?". Having understood nothing with a perplexed look, I asked him "Didn't he die?". With a simple smile, my dad replied, "If you are asking if he had stopped breathing after he was executed, yes. But did he die? No. People like him never die. Killing an inspiration like him, a rebel like him only leads to the emergence of a thousand more rebels. It leads to something huge and something unstoppable. Something which carries their dreams, ambitions, and shares their ideology moving forward. Their story leads to the emergence of greater leaders, someone revolutionary, someone like a George Reddy." It was the first time I heard this name ever and the question that followed next was something obvious - "Who is he?" I asked with curiosity. In the next couple of hours, my dad narrated an incredible story of Mr. George Reddy. Revisiting it still gives me goosebumps.

With all these memories, I traveled to the theater. I was excited, happy and couldn't wait for his story to reach a greater audience. I have been like this since I watched the trailer of George Reddy. And finally the movie began and it went for 153 minutes. Once it was done, I looked around to see the audience's reaction. It wasn't anything like mine when I first heard his story. It should have been very intense, after all 'a picture speaks a thousand words'. But no, not in this case. The actor Mr. Sandeep Madhav was great. In the scenes he got, he lived up to the expected level. But the narration? The editing? The storytelling? It could and should have been much much better. Let me take one example from the movie to make my point. There is a scene in the movie where George Reddy wanted to talk to the student community but his friend informs him that most of them were locked in their rooms by the opposition (as they knew how persuasive and powerful his speech could be. I wish the audience got a chance to know it too). The very next minute, another person comes and says to George that 5000 people are assembled in the ground waiting for his speech. I ask one question here - 'Why?' Yes. I want the audience to know 'why' more than 'how'. They came because George Reddy was an eloquent speaker. He was someone who could inspire people through his words, he could make the young blood boil with his slogans. His Charisma and intelligence inspires people and fills their hearts with courage. Of all the innumerous brilliant qualities he possesses, by then he already had earned himself a huge following for his oratory skills. This quality probably might have made few students break the doors, release others to hear his speech. In the end, the 'how' doesn't matter but the 'why' does. I wish there were scenes showcasing how influential his speeches were.

The narration was so vague that in one scene, George Reddy attends an interview at ISRO where he makes the interviewers go awe with his performance but when offered the position, he declines it instantly. Why? No one knows. Now, from the statements of George Reddy's real-life friends, George Reddy declined the offer from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The professors there were awestruck by his knowledge and work and offered him a huge grant for his research work in physics but he still rejected it later to accept the admission at Osmania University for the same research. TATA research institute would definitely have had been anyone else's preference as it had higher resources, better opportunities, and funding for the study than Osmania. But George Reddy is not 'anyone'. At a very young age, unlike many of us, he knew the life he wanted to lead. There was a greater explanation for his choice of staying back at Osmania. But the director puts no efforts to even try to make the audience understand it partially. How pathetic! Not very frequently we see someone giving up a luxurious life to fight for people, to fight against injustice in society. It takes a person like George Reddy to make such an exceptional life choice.

Missed life events - As his ferocious slogan goes - Jeena Hai Toh Marna Seekho, Kadam Kadam Mein Ladna Seekho (If you want to live, learn to die first. Learn to fight at every step) - George Reddy did fight at every step of his life. He was a gold medalist in MSc Physics at Osmania University. University professors were reluctant at times to teach in his presence as George might ask a question putting them in a difficult position to answer (his intelligence would definitely beat theirs and they knew it). Despite all his brilliance, no professor from his department came forward to refer him and support him with his Ph.D. application at the very same University. They were scared of George Reddy's opposition. It took one professor from a different department to take a step and refer to his application. Oh, by the way, MSc in Physics was never his first desire. He came second in the state PUC exam (something similar to EAMCET these days) and wanted to pursue Medicine. Having topped the exam, his name was not on the list of the students selected for studying Medicine. He fought there as well to know the reason and he finally got to know that he was rejected because he was considered a non-local in Andhra Pradesh back then. But this rejection didn't affect his self-confidence as he knew that earning a degree in any field is not the only way to pursue it. I tell you, Ladna Seekhna hai toh iss se nahi toh kis se seekhna hai?

Let me end this with the end of the movie. I wonder if it could have been more abrupt than this!! His planned murdered was shown as it was committed by someone, not part of ABVP (they were termed as ABCD in the movie). To my knowledge, ABVP was directly connected to George Reddy's murder planning and implementation. Kartha Karma Kriya for this horrendous act was solely ABVP. His murder and his mother's death in the movie was followed by a researcher throwing George Reddy's gun in the Hussain Sagar and the gun reaching the statue of Buddha. The End. Wait, what? Are you trying to say that his death ended the violence and now we all live in peace? If so, I sincerely condemn it as it is so wrong. This is not a hypothetical story where you give an abrupt ending and leave it's meaning to the audience's imagination. It is a true story of a real person, a real hero. You state facts. You show facts. Sadly none of these happened in this movie. I ask this to the director - With your vague ending, are you telling me what you showed in the movie is the end of him? Absolutely not. His death was not the end of him. His death was the beginning. Beginning to something magnificent. Something unimaginable. Something that can't be destroyed. His death gave birth to the Heirs. Heirs of George Reddy. Hundreds of thousands of heirs unioned under one name -- PDSU - Progressive Democratic Students Union - He formed PDS (Progressive Democratic Students) and his death formed PDSU. The union carries his aims, slogans, legacy forward. They share his agony towards injustice, his zero tolerance for misconduct, constantly fighting not just to prevail the student rights but also to strive for equality, for justice. They stand by the common man and by the victims of the sovereign society, restoring the hope in the people in a society of vulturous rulers. They call themselves proudly as 'George Reddy varasulam' (the 'heirs of George Reddy'). There is no death to the brave hearts. You take one down, hundreds emerge. 'Death won't come very soon to me' - he said it and his heirs make sure it stays true. The Indian Che Guevara deserves much much better biopic. This movie is nothing but a commercial film with numerous misleading acts, few misconceptions, wrong portrayals (like his time of death or setting the movie around arts college whereas George was a Science student) hardly portraying what a real person George Reddy was. In the right hands, this story could have been another 'The Motor Cycle Diaries' (A movie based on the life events of Mr. Che Guevara) but unfortunately not. If the makers were frightened of the consequences and hence avoided the facts, then why take up his biopic in the first place? George Reddy's life narration is not for the weak. I so wish someone gives a deserving tribute to our legend so his story can reach a broader audience. Laal Salam.

I'm not a person who usually writes film reviews. But this is no ordinary film for me. Having heard his stories from a very long time, I can wholeheartedly say that George Reddy has not just been an inspiration to my parents but also to me. His bravery is the inspiration for many of us to take a stand against and fight injustice in society. I want to convey to the people who didn't hear about him that he is a lot more than what is shown in the movie. There is far more to his personality.

An Inspirational Story let down by Shoddy Writing
AnirudhGod22 November 2019
I had the level of hype which I had not even for a single Telugu movie, only for George Reddy. I booked the tickets in advance just to catch the premiere show without fail. I just wanted to watch this movie, no matter what. But...I was kind of let down, sadly. I thought it would be something more than a film; the real life story of George and his ideology (which is, of course, socialism.) But it turns out to be just a film. Which is shot well, but written poorly.

The story begins in a meeting room where George's documentary footage is playing. We are introduced to the character of Muskaan (Muskaan Khubchandini) who seems to be looking into the past of George. That way she travels to Hyderabad, to meet his acquaintances and know more about him. In that process, we are revealed the memories of George and his doings.

Now, I'm pretty much confused as to what I want to tell about this film. What concerns me is that, the team of the film say they researched for 5 years, and that's a lot, for this project to materialise. But I don't see much research here, than some random moments stitched together with a character called George. The movie fails to develop a character as intricate as George Reddy, with nuance and subtlety. There is no proper build-up to moments, and everything happens one thing after an another. But there are some really good moments of fights that are praiseworthy, but that which is let down by lack of proper character development. The ending sequence is really good, but it's let down by not following the facts. And that's the problem; the film takes too many liberties with George's story. We have clear evidence from his best friends who say George was brutally murdered in broad daylight and in front of the people, with the police batting a blind eye, but the film says it's night and there is no one there. Things like this should be taken care of, instead of distorting it. And the plotline involving Muskaan, granddaughter of Maya, could have been easily taken out of the story as there's really no use for it, and it doesn't add to any kind of character development or build-up. Even Maya could have been taken out of the story, as it adds nothing to the story.

Coming to Sandeep Madhav's acting, he is damn good. The actors all have done their job pretty well. The cinematography is also really good, by Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti. He poured his life over into this project. The background music is good and captures the feeling of youth. The songs are good, though out of place (Royal Enfield song was definitely not necessary). The set design is well-done and captures the mood of the 70's. And that's about the good part.

The editing is poorly done, without focus on key moments that need to be felt. And man, the dubbing is so off at times and the effing censorship and muting of words is very annoying. The very movie that wants us to raise your voice, is suppressed by powers that are against the freedom of speech (censor-board). The censor-board is very annoying, and it's making me tired and vexed-up. We need to think about the direction our country is heading with boards like these, with no proper free speech and expression through art.

Coming at last, by no means this is a bad movie. It is really well-shot and well-acted film, and some action stunts give you goosebumps...but not much impact lies in the dialogue and character development of the story. Though the makers gave their best, the writing department is where it drifts off into half-heartedness. Which makes me pretty sad, considering the hype I had for the movie for several days, even when I had exams. I want to give this movie a 9/10 for support, but I wouldn't be telling the truth for what I witnessed. I shouldn't have had such expectations for a Tollywood film. I wish they worked more to deliver an undiluted piece of work.

But still, I encourage you all to watch the film. It's a story that deserves our attention. George Reddy is a hero who inspired many of those who were around him to fight against injustice and his death left a lasting impact on the campus of Osmania University.

George Reddy - A man who deserves better.
king_roars24 November 2019
I was really looking forward to this movie and had big expectations after checking out the trailers. But it has disappointed by not sticking close to the reality of the subject and also being narratively weak. The heroine double act was totally unnecessary as it killed the pace of the film. Instead of being a character-centric film, it tries to be an epic like Mahabharata which is not suitable for a small budget film. At least I could give credit to this movie for arousing my interest in George, who I knew very little about before. That's also why I'll say that George was a much more interesting and deeper person than what was shown in the film.

From an Osmania student.

I read about George Reddy in Wikipedia after watching movie, I see lot of things missed in the movie. Not made single scene that'll make you connect and whole script written poorly. Subject was powerful but making was worst.

Excellent movie
sowjanyagoudyerra14 September 2022
The cinematography of the movie is excellent. The dialogues returned were just amazing and the movie is very thought provoking. The message conveyed in this movie is good, in order to get something, you need to voice against injustice. Few scenes are cult emotions. Sandeep is a very unrated hero. He gave life to the character, every scene is the highlight of the movie. The climax scene actually made me cry .Overall it's a good movie with a good screenplay, good songs and every actor did justice to their characters. But I really appreciate the director and t5he producer for choosing this man's story, it's definitely a gutsy move.

Warning: Spoilers
The aggression in this movie is simply portrayed by the music and the best example I can give is Raktham Marige, Ragadam modale background song. It gives goosebumps to everyone. This movie is Cult, the songs and lyrics, lighting up the fire, raising like a phoenix , there are many more. Dialogues are very thought provoking," Pusthakalo dhairayam ekada ani vethukuthunaru", Nothing can be created , nothing can be destroyed, anything ! I really appreciate the dialogue writer for his amazing writing. And the slogan, RAISE YOUR VOICE BEFORE THE TRUTH DIES . Movie is all about how people in strong positions oppress the weak people. Everyone should watch this movie.

George Reddy is a real hero.

The climax made me cry. For a minute I thought the hero himself was George reddy. His action made the film more interesting.

The direction of the movie is excellent. Very inspirational.

A must watch masterpiece.

I couldn't see any fake emotion throughout the movie.every scene is raw and inspiring.

Wish to watch more movies like this. Inspiring story line. George Reddy is definitely a role model for following generations.

It's 2022 and am still vibing for "vadu nadipe band Royal Enfieldu" Friend of mine suggested this movie. One of the finest movies, I thank the film maker for choosing this story.

Sandeep is a very unrated hero. He gave life to the character, every scene is highlight of the movie.

akashsilvers13 February 2020
This movie is a very good example of how not to make a movie. No corelation between scenes, no motive for the lead actor, The story doesnt go anywhere, you dont know what the lead actor wants to do and who he is fighting against. It leaves the audiences pretty much confused.

Because of this film i learnt more about him.

Thanks to jeevan reddy for letting us to know about George reddy.

I moved so much for this movie.

This world never saves the good person.

We are loosing many legends like George reddy.

He left the offer from isro and gave all his life about student and social service.

But brutally killed by the goons.

Osmania University never forgets him.

He was the person who thought how a student should take care and responsibilities of students and social issues.

JAI GEORGE REDDY 🙏

RIP.

This movie is pure example of sensless Direction. No correlation between scenes and acting is none or if there is stupid acting. Couldn't watch betond 30 minutes and at thought wasted the time by choosing to watch this movie. Not sure how people even gave such high ratings for this movie. SENSLESS DIRECTION and people praising the director and his skills????? No Direction skills at all!!!!!

5. This movie has a separate fan base. I watched the movie just for his attitude. Why is Sandeep not in any new movies? We want these kinds of actors. They not only live up to the character but add their charm in it. The song "Am gonna be the change, it's called revolution" is so damn good. It lifts up the whole vibe of the hero and the scene. I was connected to the whole story and his chartater , the director didn't miss any details, the mannerism of the character is on point. Am became a big fan of his attitude, the way he fights against ragging and the few dialogues during these scenes are inexplicable. I feel this movie is very underrated. I guess this movie is still available in Prime, guys who didn't watch it should actually watch it, you will get to know many things and as a human you will learn a lot.

4. The ending of the story was actually an ending to an era. George Reddy's Era. I wish I could change the ending. I have watched the movie at least 5 times , every scene and emotion is on point. Am not a great fan of fights but in this movie, there is an actual cause behind every fight. The director didn't add any fake scenarios to spice up the movie. Even though the movie was based on real life there was no single scene to trigger an emotion or the audience. The writing of the film was very smooth. They didn't miss the comedy angle in the film. There is dailouge which describes the George Reddy Character clearly, "Raajana, eyi vishyam ikaditho vadileyandi, nenu chaduvkodaniki laibray undi, anavsaram ga nakosam me chadhuvlu padu cheskokandi". This scene comes after restricting George Reddy from college for one year. This dialogue shows what kind of person he is ! He never used students to his own needs but he always fought for them. Great movie, Great man.

Super movie loved it a lot And the story is toooo nice of George Reddy
pradeepmerugu16 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are few things which i want to share about the movie, how can we unsee the bond between a mother and son this whole movie. In this movie, mother is the person who inspires George by giving him a book about the Russian revolution and a few other books which help him to grow in leadership aspects. If you observe in the movie George reads many books, most of them are about great leaders who fought for the nation and the people. One thing I love about this movie is , it's not only about the hero, it's also about his friends. There's this one dialogue "Exams are like passing clouds ra, we succeed in life with three things: a wishbone, a funny bone and a back bone, cheer up man!

George Reddy is an interesting Biopic about a student leader who fought for student rights. Jeena Hai Toh Marna Seekho, Kadam Kadam Mein Ladna Seekho in Sandeep's voice gave another level of hype to the movie. There are many scenes which give you goosebumps in the movie. The director made justice to the story he chose. This movie is definitely going to be an inspiration to the younger generation as they will witness the power of voice. Lead actor Sandeep did more than what he can do to the character, for a minute i felt he himself is George Reddy. The main thing which i wanted to share is about the background music. The music added more rawness to the film.
