Halloween Special

A Halloween special and without a laughter track.

Lee and Lucy go trick or treating with the kids. Lee somehow leaves his smartphone behind in a spooky old house they went to but no one opened the door.

Lucy makes a reluctant Lee go back to fetch it, this is a house with a strange old witch-like lady. Later his dad Frank comes round looking for him.

There is some convincing makeup done. Lee is dressed like a zombie with a false hand. There is even a nod to the Home Alone movies as two burglars are on the prowl.

The old lady might be more in danger herself than being a danger to anyone else. There is more fun to be had once Lee and Frank get together. I do think this suffered without the laughter track.

Slow to start, but wonderful at the end.

It's Halloween, and Lee loses his phone, it ends up in a spooky house.

It's not the funniest episode of all time, but it's arguably the best produced one. It genuinely looks as good as a big budget horror film, it's slick, menacingly shot, and truly does look amazing. There are plenty of scenes many a horror film would have been proud of.

On the downside it's a slow burner, and the first half isn't the funniest segment of all, I can't really make out if that's because of the jokes, or the lack of canned laughter. The second half however has belly laughs, and the combo of Mack and Ball however is magical and very funny.

I am reminded of an episode of 2.4 children, also Halloween set, fans of that show will know the one I'm on about.

Marcia Warren is terrific as the old lady, she's so versatile. Never mind a comedy, this was perfect for Halloween, along the lines of Inside no.9.

9/10.

Low point for the serious

Not a great episode. Lee Mack appears to have forgotten that this is a comedy programme. The whole plot is over the top and it doesn't really have many laughs. Maybe the lack of a laughter track doesn't help.

This series is hit and miss, and this for me goes in the latter category.

It is, as others have said, a slow burner, which is fine if it leads to something. This sadly does not.

I think the lack of laugh track didn't help either.
