All aboard with Bill Nighy
safenoe17 May 2021
Bill Nighy plays himself as he takes viewers around the world on the tracks. I wish Bill appeared on screen, wandering the carriages, imparting whimsical bon mots, but not to be. Still, Bill Nighy is central to this series. If Bill was to fall ill, then I propose that Danny Dyer fill in as narrator just in case.

Poor Pronunciation of commentator spoils viewing
valerievlester17 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We are just watching an episode that goes through the North of Spain. We lived, worked and got married in Oviedo, Asturias so we're very excited to see the north of Spain featured. What was cringeworthy however was the dreadful pronunciation of the commentator of key place names and worst of all Can'tabrico ( adjective from Cantabria) . Bill Night pronounced it Cantab'rico the whole time. He couldn't pronounce Asturias or Galicia either or Candas, stress on second syllable not first. Surely it is common courtesy to pronounce places or people's names such as Jesus ( the j is pronounced like the ch in loch) properly even if you can't speak the language. Do your homework!

Train Travel Through South Africa
kangelani15 March 2021
Just watched the episode of the journey from Pretoria to Durban. Wonderful scenery and photography. Zero points for mispronunciation of most of the place names. Try harder Mr Nighy; you have won awards for acting so there is NO excuse! Surely someone local could have helped you with the sound. And if not, get someone to dub the voice-over.

Bill Nighy puts me to sleep
kimthecdman14 June 2022
The scenery is very interesting but Bill Nighy's torpid narration is better than a bottle of sleeping tablets. He sounds bored, mostly. Droning on, and on.

Hardly changes his delivery at all - Ho hum I hope they get someone else soon.

Where's Bill??
garyfpc-998577 August 2022
Pity Bill wasn't actually on any of the trains, he may have given Portillo a run, but sitting in a studio, mispronouncing place names doesn't cut it, very disappointing 😓😓

Decent programme ruined by constant background music
Southseares18 May 2020
Sat down to watch the Pretoria to Durban rail journey with Rovos. The programme kicked off with horrible, over-dramtic background music, and never stopped. I could only watch 20 minutes. Why do programme makers do this? It just detracts from the scenry and commentary. Silence is good!

Very poor pronounciation for New Zealand Episode
imdb-5160716 January 2021
It appears that the Narrator (Bill Nighy) was provided with no guidance on pronunciation of place names in the New Zealand episode and no review of the narration was done by anyone with knowledge of New Zealand. Mountain and region names are almost incomprehensible for New Zealanders or those with knowledge of New Zealand. The episode is an embarrassment for this accomplished actor and questions regarding the production crew.

The episode could benefit from re-recording of the narration and leaves question marks regarding pronunciation in other episodes in the series.

Given the narrative structure of the trip is from North to South the editing has resulted in some notable moments that are clearly out of chronological order.

Great programme, poor Nighy
philipedwards-1351328 October 2021
Great views camera work editing. In fact very well made travel films. But here comes the but! Why oh why voice over from Bill Nighy? Dogry me wrong I admirehim as an actor in his no rush, English gent style but voiceovers of a railway travel series, no he sends me to sleep! It's rather outdated as well doing voice overs. Can you imagine Portillo not appearing in Great British Railway Journeys? Or Chris Tarrant being absent in his series?

Misleading Title
The "world" apparently consists of the UK and nowhere else according to the makers of this for-TV pile of garbage. The makers really should be fined under the Trade Descriptions Act. There is also nothing remotely "scenic" about most of the routes they pick.

Is this really the state of TV in the UK? Yes, of course it is. Insular, stuck in the past and BORING.

I wouldn't make my dog suffer watching this. You shouldn't either..
