Indonesian genre specialist Timo Tjahjanto has begun production on “The Shadow Strays,” a new action film project.
Tjahjanto is one half of a writing-directing pair with Kimo Stamboel that are colloquially known as the Mo Brothers and previously delivered “Headshot.” However, it was as a solo director that Tjahjanto was signed to a multi-film deal with Netflix in 2022. He delivered his first picture under that arrangement later that year. “The Big 4” debuted in Netflix’s non-English language top ten.
Production of the new title is handled by Frontier Pictures with Wicky V. Olindo and Anne P. Ralie named as producers. The completion date has not been revealed.
Tjahjanto has assembled a kicking ensemble cast, many of whom previously appeared in “The Big 4.” The cast includes Aurora Ribero, Hana Malasan (“Ben & Jody”), Ali Fikri, Adipati Dolken, Kristo Immanuel (“The Big 4”), Andri Mashadi, Taskya Namya (“Waktu Maghrib”), Agra Piliang,...

A wider representation of gender roles, more training opportunities for women filmmakers, and reaching out to women audiences are all ways forward to promote women-centric stories in Southeast Asian cinema, say women filmmakers from the region.
The lively discussion involving Thai-American director Pailin Wedel (“Hope Frozen”), Indonesian actor Marissa Anita (“Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens”), Malaysian producer Lina Tan (“Sa Balik Baju”), and Filipino writer and producer Tanya Yuson (“Trese”) was staged by Netflix Asia on Wednesday.
It concluded that streamers that can reach a wider audience online have already been making a positive impact on the industry as they help to find new audiences abroad, while also creating more opportunities for women filmmakers and diversity in storytelling.
Works by the four panelists are all available on Netflix, which has been upping its game in Asia, particularly through its investment in local originals.
Gender representation across Southeast Asia film and television content can vary widely.

Netflix has been quietly expanding their anime offerings for awhile now but June is a particularly anime-heavy month. The absolutely metal sounding Record of Ragnarok arrives this month. So too do parts 1 and 2 of the newest Sailor Moon film on June 3 and Godzilla Singular Point on June 24.
