The highly-anticipated sequel to the 1986 “Top Gun” movie has taken off around the world, bringing a new audience as well as fans of the original into movie theaters. “Top Gun: Maverick” opens with a sequence that pays homage to the first film visually and sonically as the music launches into Harold Faltermeyer’s famous “Top Gun” anthem.
Editor Eddie Hamilton, who locked picture back in July 2020, breaks down how he helped edit the opening scene.
Paying homage to the original
In the first frames of the film, Hamilton had marks to hit as the film paid homage to the original through score, music and cinematography. The opening was almost a mirror of the 1986 original.
“Tom always said we had to start the film the same way with Harold Faltermeyer’s opening and then “Danger Zone.” It was the first thing Joseph and the Dp Claudio Miranda shot.

A new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet gives us our best look at the game’s legendary pocket monsters.
“Hot professors! Four-player co-op! Lechonk! Today, the Pokémon Company dumped a trove of info about the next mainline Pokémon versions for Switch, Scarlet and Violet, including the release date. But a new trailer also pulled back the curtain on the two new version-specific legendary Pokémon, Koraidon and Miraidon, teasing them in a brief pre-rendered cinematic. They look very silly.”

Kenny Loggins’ 1986 hit “Danger Zone” is climbing the iTunes chart again thanks to the phenomenal box office success of “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The song first roared to success when it appeared in the original film and on the soundtrack. “Danger Zone” was composed by Giorgio Moroder and the lyrics were written by Tom Whitlock. Before Loggins walked in the door and added his ideas to the tune, the song went through different vocalists including Reo Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin, but Cronin couldn’t hit the high notes.
Loggins could and did.
The “Top Gun” soundtrack would go on to become one of the biggest-selling movie albums of all-time, so its sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” seemed a natural place to revisit the song.
Loggins spoke with Variety about re-recording “Danger Zone,” but why the original was deemed superior, and his upcoming autobiography, “Still Alright,” out June 14.

Cinema’s favourite ageless fighter pilot returns with all the nail-biting aeronautics and emotional sucker punches that made the original an 80s-defining hit
And we’re back. A full 36 years (including some Covid-related runway delays) after Tony Scott’s big-screen recruitment advert for US naval aviators became an epoch-defining cinema hit, Tom Cruise is back doing what he does best – flashing his cute/crazy superstar smile and flexing his bizarrely ageless body in an eye-popping blockbuster that, for all its daft macho contrivances, still manages to take your breath away, dammit.
From the burnished opening shots of planes waltzing off an aircraft carrier to the strains of Kenny Loggins’s Danger Zone, little has changed in the world of Top Gun – least of all Cruise. Maverick may be testing jets out in the Mojave desert, but he’s still got the jacket, the bike(s), the aviator shades and (most...
