The Greys Who Stole Christmas
owen-watts22 November 2020
A perfectly functional extraterrestrial Christmas special from veteran US stop-motion family the Chiodos Brothers. The story is a fairly by-the-books "cruel creature learns the meaning of christmas" trope but with a nicely silly extraterrestrial twist and some deft narrative oddities. The real draw here is some fantastic designs and the legitimately stunning animation - you can tell this has been made by craftsmen and it all feels remarkably tactile. If you're in need of some festive cheer or are a fan of the form you'd be missing out by skipping it.

An out-of-this-world Christmas classic
eelen-seth21 November 2020
From the director of KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE and executive producer Jon Favreau comes a crazy Christmas story filled with magic, heart and... aliens. Alien Xmas is a vibrantly detailed claymation story that reminds of Selick's work. An out-of-this-world Xmas classic!

Adults - It's a mixed bag! Teens - It's a mixed bag! Kids - Will love it! This is definitely geared towards kids!

Maybe - would recommend this movie!

I've got mixed feelings on this one. Only having seen pictures prior to watching this I was expecting 3d animation and not clay animation! Also not sure if this was labeled as a film or TV movie? As a TV movie it works! Just like other classic clay animation X-mas Tv movies. As a film though.. it leaves a lot to be desired!

Solid watch for the holidays
Horst_In_Translation3 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What we got here is Netflix' "Alien Xmas", an animated short film from 2020, and this one was released on 20th November to be really precise. Which means that it is exactly two weeks old now, but despite this short period of time, you can see from the number of votes here on imdb as well as the fact that this has ten reviews already (eleven with mine), that it got immediately seen by many. But no surprise there because after all it is Netflix. The time of the year when this got released makes sense as well because, as it is very obvious from the photo, this is a film for the Christmas season, mostly for kids probably. But not exclusively. I am a grown man and liked it too for the most part. There are no major weaknesses, but I shall get into detail about that a little later. First of all, let me say that this is based on a book and if I get it right, this book was written by Stephen Chiodo and his body of work is really the epitome of an all-rounder. Not only does he write children's books apparently, but he has been in almost every field of production you find in films. This may explain why he is not the most prolific director despite directing his first works in the 1960s already, which means over 50 years ago. Here he directs again and does a fairly good job I'd say. I am a bit curious about some of the other stuff he did. I mean just look at his career-defining works when it comes to producing and as a visual effects artist. A mix of aliens and Christmas there too, just like it is here the case with this movie. I cannot say horror because this one is really way too harmless overall, even if there is a greedy female alien who wants to do something horrible. But luckily our protagonist is there to help mankind a bit against his own and in the end they simply coexist in peace. By the way, the protagonist is simply called X, certainly no coincidence given X-Mas and NetfliX. He is voiced by the incomparable Dee Bradley Baker, a real icon when it comes to voice acting with how he has been a part of this branch for decades and been in so many projects. This one here is probably not his most challenging work because the little alien does not talk at all, just makes noises. There is a lot of talking though from the human characters in here, including a father who is so busy with his job that he does not really find the time to be with his little girl. But she kinda understands. By the way, you can also see from the characters' skin colors (and not just the protagonists, also Santa's other helpers) that we are in 2020 now. No need to get into detail about that. You will know what I mean. If it's a good thing, everybody needs to decide for themselves.

The for me funniest moment was maybe the inclusion of reindeer in here. They basically have no job with this super modern new sleigh and how we see them express their emotions (first through booing, then through laughing when the sleigh is not working properly) was pretty hilarious. Exactly my kind of humor. Another thing I want to mention here is that I quite liked the introduction on the distant planet and there we meet X, the hero. We see how he is sneaky, but still small, but pretty courageous to make up for his lack in size. By the books basically. When this introduction is over, then he is off to Earth. I think it still can be called an introduction, even if the real framework is Santa telling this story about X to the little children who do not want to go to sleep yet. I must say I struggled a bit with Santa's looks unfortunately, but other than that, it is also a fine film visually. I liked the looks of everything else, including the locations, the snow, X, the aliens, the humans, the dog etc. The key idea/twist is basically that the aliens change their color, become considerably more colorful when turning to the good side you can say, i.e. when no longer being against humans. It was an okay inclusion, but did not feel as meaningful and emotional as it was meant to be. Good enough nonetheless. The ending feels a bit rushed then with how the aliens all of a sudden agree to deliver all the presents, but as an animated fantasy/sci-fi film, they are getting away with it nicely and no damage is done. If we already have to live through an alien invasion, then this must be it. Such friendly little aliens. I guess this would be all then. This one is not great by any means and probably will not garner a gigantic deal of awards recognition, but a little bit would be nice and no hesitation for me really in giving the outcome here a thumbs-up. I also think a sequel is not unlikely at some point, even if I must say I don't know if there's more books about X. But it does not matter. They can also make a new (short) film without a literary sequel. Finally, let me add that I have not read the book(s), so my perception and evaluation here is solely based on this movie from two weeks ago. Also cannot talk about parallels and differences between base material and adaptation although I am fairly stunned by how many writers worked on this relatively short film. Go watch. With or without your kid. By the way, it runs for over 40 minutes, especially if you keep watching when they display all the foreign voice actors' names, the folks who were in charge of the dubbing and synchronization. Now that's really all. Maybe not too amazing a watch for January until November, but in the last month of the year, it certainly deserves to be seen. Glad it's getting the attention.

The moral of the story...
Tomus725 December 2020
Is that christmas is about giving gifts. Or, if I remember correctly I think it said, more explicitly, that giving gifts is how you show your love.

On the whole it was cute and amusing, but I'm not a fan of that underlying message.

Sweet, silly, optimal length, well animated!
meerkatmanor-3938021 December 2020
This movie has VERY distinct bits and pieces of the plot copied from other Christmas movies - I easily recognized things from Polar Express and Dr. Seuss Grinch, plus others. For some people this ^ may just feel super boring or cliche, but the stop-motion was awesome, and the concept was just original enough, so the mirroring of other classics was almost charming actually, not lame.

Nice average addition to throw on the seasonal Short/Special watch-list along with Peanuts, Dr. Seuss Grinch, etc.

Virtually no mention of any religious Christmas themes (jesus birthday, nativity scene, etc).

Warning: Spoilers
After a hectic evening,I got home in the mood to just relax with a easy-going viewing. Remembering Dan Murrell mention in a recent episode of Charting that it was a 40 minute film, I got set for a Sci-Fi Christmas.

View on the film:

Flying around the North Pole to invade Christmas, director Stephen Chiodo lands on a adorable quirky atmosphere from the handmade texture of the stop-motion animation giving the classic "Little Green Men" design of the aliens jaunty movements, against the bright red tinsel and snow-covered elves working at the North Pole.

Originally planned to be a full feature film, the screenplay by Kealan O'Rourke,Dan Clark and Noah Kloor cake the joy of gift giving theme of the movie, with a cloying, sickly sweet heaviness, which weighs down on the frolics of the merry X invasion.

A sweet little Christmas short with some mild laughs and really good stop motion animation.
IonicBreezeMachine22 November 2020
Alien Xmas follows a group of aliens called the Klepts whose entire society is based upon stealing things. The smallest Klept, named X, is sent on a mission to Earth to destroy earth's gravity and float all Earth's material possessions into space, but an encounter with the elves of Christmas town changes X's outlook and shows him the true meaning of Christmas.

Alien Xmas is a 42 minute animated Christmas special from stop motion animators, The Chiodo Brothers, who've provided effects and animation work on everything from Simpsons, The Thundermans, Elf, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and you can tell from their work the put a lot of love into their craft. Alien Xmas, much like the stop motion elements they created for Elf, is very much inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass shorts but with the trio's unique take on the material and I'm pleased to say it works.

While the plot of Alien Xmas is certainly standard Christmas fare that most viewers will be able to predict, the animation, humor, and style of Alien Xmas compliments that familiarity and gives a nice twist to traditional material while also keeping it feeling timeless in its execution. The characters are very expressive in their movements and their actions and the Chiodo brothers create many great locations with some absolutely wonderful details. I really enjoyed this Christmas special and wouldn't mind seeing more if the Chiodos were inclined to do so.

My kids love it.
riwyyib23 November 2020
My kids found this and have watched it at least 10 times in the past 2 days....that means it's good. Some watching a new thing over and over is better than the old things, I like it too. The story makes them laugh and the concept of giving instead of taking/receiving is very sweet.

This is a lovely off the wall animated film
chadschofield-1492221 December 2020
Our three year old absolutely adores this film!

At 40 minutes it's a great film length for younger children, and rather than padding it out with song after song, it relies on the strength of its story.

The animation is lovely, it's funny, heart warming and it's not annoying - which is nice! In fact, I'd go as far to say I really like it too.

I'm really surprised it has got such a low score.

Fits in among the classics
CubsandCulture4 December 2020
This is an adorable Christmas in peril story with just enough of a sci-fi twist to be fresh and enough of the traditional cheer to fit in with received classics ala Frosty and Rudolph etc.. The alien design-especially their ships-end up being really colorful but archetypical in their design; everything is just so much fun. X is such a cute little guy. Can't wait to spend next year with X again.

eXcellent X-Mas Xpecial
JayWolfgramm11 December 2023
"Alien Xmas" follows a race of aliens known as the Klepts. The Kelpts know nothing of giving, only of stealing. And they plan to steal all the stuff on Earth. To do so they send the smallest Klept, named X, down to the North Pole to set up their plan.

It is clear from the setup, exactly what the moral of the story is going to be. There are story beats that feel forced, and others that feel rushed. But the story is not where the short excels, it is undeniably charming.

"Alien Xmas" is animated as if it is a classic Rakin Bass stop motion animated TV Special. This animation style really works for the delivery of this cheesy tale. The story itself is narrated by Santa to a bunch of elf kids. The story feels like it could have been written and illustrated by an elementary school kid. The story may not be anything special, but its delivery and execution was just so sweet and sincere, I could not help but smile as I watched it.

Like a homemade gift from a small child. It may not be technically worth a lot. But they worked so hard on it, and are so excited to give it to you, you hang it up on the fridge and show it off.

Great for Christmas
rarepunkrock13 November 2022
Came across this while browsing for things my kids can watch. They absolutely love it!

This film has a wonderful story, told mostly through xcellent narration. The story is very entertaining and has a nice, positive outcome.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Alien Xmas to anyone with small children. The beauty of it is that this isn't like most Christmas stories, although the ending is what you would expect and hope for. A new take on a classic message of giving and being thankful.

There is little negative to say really...

A nice film to enjoy with the whole family. Perfect for that time of year.

Check it out if you haven't already.

Sweet and quirky Christmas special that is yet to be a classic.
ultramatt2000-126 December 2023
This is worth the watch on Netflix and I enjoyed it. What I liked about it was that it used stop-motion animation. The same technique that was used in those Rankin-Bass specials. I like how the character, Obie, the elf, was a nice tribute to Willis O'Brien, the man who animated the title apes in the original versions of KING KONG and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. Not to mention inspiring the Chiodo Brothers, the men behind this special, get into film-making and animation in the first place. Audiences young and old will enjoy it. It is not annoying.

Give it a watch. You will like it. I guarantee. Merry X-Mas.
