Expected good story, but the director cheated. The direction was compromised. Screenplay, story was pathetic. The message was not delivered well. Cinematography was good. Liked the music.

appalling plight of underprivileged slum dwellers
beevenkat11 December 2021
#JailMovie narrates the appalling plight of underprivileged slum dwellers who are forced to relocate to the peripheries of Chennai city. They lead pathetic lives surrounded by filth, are forced to resort to unmerited means to make ends meet and are often targeted by immoral cops. There seems to be no ray of light because they are constantly viewed as scumbags. Performances, locations and dialogues seem natural. The climax is effective. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 3/5.
Good screenplay

Perfect vasanthabalan movie. But not in the range of angadi theru or veyil or some of his previous movies. Most of the scenes were almost like from few other movies.. GV was ok . Heroine ok too. Nice music . GVs friends acted well too. Wasn't boring . Was good overall.

Save Tamil Cinema From North-Madras 'GHETTO' Fetish!
samxxxul9 December 2021
Just when I thought 2021 couldn't get worse, here we have 2 back to back appalling outings from GV Prakash. I have avoided watching so many films and yet to give John Abraham's "Satyameva Jayate 2" a chance. I want to save time by not watching it, or at least that's what i think. I'm a sucker for cheesy bad movies but the trailer was so awful. But here we have a strong contender and Jail is easily the worst film of the year along with Bhoomi, Jagame Thandhiram, Sabapathy, Navarasa, Trip, Vaazhl, Bachelor and Vijay Sethupathi's 2021 filmography (Check out my review for his Mughizh)
I remember when there was no other choice but to watch Navarasa. Despite it's pretentious casting and worst dialogues, it was beyond comprehension to think on how this totally ridiculous film was banked by Netflix India. I found myself laughing the whole time. You can ask me why did i watch it, let me state that i usually stay away from such films labelled with cringe and paid reviewers hype. But there are times i won't have an option but forced to watch it with my friends and hate every second for witnessing crap unfolding in front of my eyes with laughter and cringe reactions from those around me. I resisted to share my thoughts as all the criticism has been said and spewed forth for all the good reasons.
Now there's another overhyped movie, wish i could've skipped considering GV Prakash's awful 'Bachelor' a movie which was a trite observation on insecure types, losers, wannabe hippies. But I had hopes on Vasanthabalan who is back after almost 7 years, his last film was a decent ripoff of Amadeus. This was the only driving force to check out Jail, but he failed due to pathetic writing and mediocre acting by the lead, supporting characters, ridiculous villain and the awful songs. Too bad that most of the time the result is disappointing and absolutely superfluous. When the film arrived at the climax, i didn't even care. It was predictable as the lead loses his life, I just got detached as this film does a terrible job communicating with the audience with what emotions we're supposed to be feeling.
In Conclusion: A really bad filmmaking and it's high time that Tamil cinema should stop mediocre filmmakers from milking out delicate topics (Eelam Tamilians, Plight of Farmers, Malaysian Tamils, Gentrification, Kasthapadra Vada Chennai folks, Drone Shots, Rowdies, Porul, Pullingo Sambavams) and focus on good writing.

derailed from story and missed chance

RATED 6/10
Language: Tamil
Source: Amazon Prime
Good making and cast but too much diluted into gangster fights rather than actual issues of migration.... Movie started and ended with song solid documentary details about slum migration into concrete jail...but in-between it just travel as gang fight with very average love interest.... If they concentrate more on the theme, it would have another milestone like Madras... Missed chance...

The acting is pretty good for all the actors. G V Prakash did a pretty good job as an actor. Ravi Maria did a good job as villain
The plight of the people of Kaveri Nagar was well portrayed in the beginning. But as the story unwound, the issue was pushed to the back and the story of hero and his friends took over.
The last few scenes in the last ten minutes were real spoil sport and the only reasons could be either the Director's view that 'things do not change at all and everything always ends up bad' or just sadistic / defeatist attitude!
I mentally blocked the last few scenes and the movie was pretty decent till then. Spare yourself the agony and stop watching the last ten minutes!
Vasantha Balan.. you had a good story. You had to spoil it!

This film suppose to speak about displacement and how it affects the working class people, but this film is full of stereotypes just like the director's mentor's films. The first few minutes of the movie was somewhat good, the character of Kalai how he is struggling to get a decent job, his relationship with his friends Karna and Raaki, his relationship with his co-worker, other than these few scenes nothing works in this film. In certain emotional scenes the film seems like a dark comedy. They could have spoken so many things like how the people are been chased by the Government away from their own land, how bad the construction and facilities in the Slum Clearance Board (Urban Habitat Development Board in present) and Housing Corporation, there are few dialogues in this film about education is being denied to them but rather going deep into problem the director focuses on the problems in weed selling and smashing televisions from the rooftop. The final scene where the character Rosa Malar wanting to do abortion and the frame followed by the blood spilling on white tiles with the baby's cry on the background. It's not clear how this scene is relevant to the title Jail or the problems of displacement, is this some kind of metaphor or it's just the director's support to Pro-Life, and either way that scene was pointless. Overall this film is not just a failed attempt but a pull back from breaking the stereotypes.
another gully based crappiest movie
saru202027 March 2022
GV Prakash has spoiled his career to the core and this is another crap coming from his side, the painful fact is that despite being directed by one of the good directors in Tamil cinema, this one came out to be a less than a mediocre film, who is known for his emotional cinema angle, which was totally missing except the protagonist's mother's death scene.
The trajectory of Tamil cinema is still on the lines of taking gully based movies, I don't know if the commercial success is happening because of that group of people and hence the targeting is still happening but this is definitely not good at all.
This one especially portrays the lives of the Kannagi Nagar people, the director has tried to justify whatever mistakes that group of people do, a totally irresponsible film making there.
There are so many ways to present the lives of those underprivileged people if the director does really care about the enhancement of their lives but it was abrupt that the film was just trying to show one side of the story and failed miserably to highlight what could be done for the betterment, in that way, this film could've easily been into the limelight and a box office success if it'd have taken from all angles but just one side of storytelling dumped the whole movie into the gully itself.

I Hate Jail

Warning: Spoilers
I've been here too many times okay. I'm tired of being locked up it's really not fun it really is. I might have to change my ways because I can't be like this anymore. I can't do this anymore I can't do this. This place is torture like you would never understand how much torture jail really really is. I will change my ways since I can't stand or bear to be there any longer than I already have it's just impossible to be there for so long. So I will change my ways i swear I can;t go to jail again I just can't. It has truly scared my for life and I do not know if I will ever recover. Anyways I know I have changed now.
I guess this movie make everyone to think Kaveri people are worst

I'm need to that area only, actually i don't know much about them. After watching this movie it making me to think we are in dangerous area, the intro scene of GV itself made as bad impression about this people. Director intension may different, but what conveyed to us is bad impression.
Few seens are really good when people are coming to same area from different place and no jobs to continue there normal work life.
But this screenshot play is not focus on that like Angadi theru.
