During the time when filming was originally meant to take place throughout 2020; Sasha Ytterskog was set to reprise his dual roles as Crane and Graves. Two characters first introduced in Clank: Agent Recruit (2015). Ytterskog rehearsed a fight scene with Pauli Janhunen Calderón and participated in part of a sequence before filming was forced to shut down. When production re-started in 2022, Ytterskog was no longer available to return. Okan Akdag was cast in a new role, Efisio Cross. His villain character ended up fulfilling the same function as to what Crane would have done in the original script. Ytterskog still cameos in the final film as one of Goldscar's guards at the shelter house.
When the film premieres it will mark the longest gap between in between releases of the "Clank" series.
The film is a follow-up to Clank's Nemesis, Clank: Agent Recruit (2015), Clank: Legacy (2016) and Clank: Red Mosaic (2017). However, the story-line takes place before the events of the first entry and is therefore classified as a prequel/flashback film which sets up the events of the proposed concluding project Clank: Dreadbullet.
The film takes place in the time-lines of 2009 and 2014. The story is told through parallel editing where the filmmakers follow the story of Eric and Clank who are both assigned a similar mission.
The film was originally intended to be released in late 2020. Production was ultimately halted by the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical issues. As a result, DEP Films shifted around the priorities of scheduled projects which lead to "Golden Scar" not being able to resume filming until early Summer 2022.
