The film features a data sonification by composer Jamie Perera of all the deaths in the war on drugs in its soundtrack. Each sound is a death from 2016 to the present day. Data sonification is the process of taking raw data and turning it into sound.
At screenings, the film's credits feature a dedication to "Mookie Gizbert Borromeo", the daughter who would have been born on the day filming for the documentary stopped - 25 February 2019. The director concieved the idea for the film after she and her then-partner journalist [[Richard Gizbert]] buried Mookie at their cottage in Canada. He was later discovered to have been having an affair with a woman 34 years his younger. Director Leah Borromeo has said "losing my mom, my daughter and my partner was the trifecta of loss that went into this film."
Orly's dogs are called Bronson and Bruce Lee.
"The Mortician of Manila" won the Best Short Documentary award at the Austin Film Festival, a 2021 Academy Awards qualifier.
