- Patty's investigators track down the missing ring and a security camera provides them with a photo of the man who pawned it. The police soon make an arrest and Daniel Purcell identifies him as the man who attacked him and killed his wife. Patty's hopes of forcing the company to reveal its doctored environmental reports are dashed when Purcell, under oath, inexplicably refuses to accuse them of fraud. Tom and Ellen travel south to find journalist Josh Reston. They soon realize that they are dealing with powerful foes that will use every opportunity to stop them.—garykmcd
- Daniel Purcell does the dishes - not in prison. But his wife's there, so it's also not in the present. He scrubs at some green slime on a plate. He sees a man on his dock approaching his wife. He scrubs at the slime and watches helplessly as the hooded figure approaching his happy, alive wife.
He wakes up in prison.
Patty tells Ellen about the reporter in W. Va. that Daniel told her about. Ellen and Tom leave for W. Va. in an hour to find Josh Reston.
5 months later, Ellen greets whoever she's been talking to in her hotel room. Her gun is in her purse. She checks that whoever brought the cash. She asks if they're ok, they seem a little worried. She fires the gun then leaves the room.
Patty meets with Detective Huntley and the district attorney, who cite Daniel yelling "I'll kill you" two weeks earlier. Huntley doesn't believe there's really a missing ruby ring.
Patty sets her bald security guy on it, passing out photos of the ring.
Cut to the strung-out blond guy who pawned the ring, meeting with a woman and a girl in the park. He didn't bring all the money she wanted. She storms off.
In prison, Daniel visits with his daughter as Patty observes. Patty tells Daniel there's a case against Aerocyte but they can't find the reporter Reston yet.
Down in W. Va. Tom drives as Ellen serves as navigatrix, reading the map. They're lost. They see something and pull over. Something smells. There's a bonfire in the distance.
The next day, Wayne golfs with Kendrick. A guy drives up, telling them about Josh Reston. He says he's been talking to Purcell and he took a water sample from the plant. Kendrick tells him to get it back.
The security guy tells Patty they found the ring and they have a lead on the guy who pawned it.
Tom and Ellen knock on Reston's door. The lock has been busted off. The inside is ransacked.
Patty meets with Detective Huntley and shows him the ring they bought from the owner of a pawn shop. She has a photo of the guy pawning it from the security camera. The detective says that doesn't mean Daniel didn't kill his wife.
The scruffy guy shiftily makes his way into a hardware store. The man says hi to him by name. Then Kevin pulls a gun and demands the money. He takes it and runs off.
Patty, her husband and her son eat a family dinner.
10 Years Earlier Patty confronts Daniel, angry that he filed for custody. She won't even let him see Michael. She tells him he doesn't want to pursue it in court because she'll destroy him.
Daniel meets with Patty in prison. He wants to redraft his will to get his estate in order. He talks about how his wife refused to acknowledge the possibility of death and the feeling of holding his daughter Erica for the first time. Patty tells him she's going to get him out of there.
In W. Va. Tom and Ellen meet with Reston's editor, still trying to find him. The editor claims he's at a basketball game. They ask about the story he was working on, about Ultima National's coal processing affecting farms. He doesn't know anything about Reston's place being ransacked. He gets up, saying Josh is a smart kid, but he's dead wrong about this one adding, "you two be careful down here."
A uniform cop gives detective Huntley a police report on Kevin for armed robbery. He robbed his own cousin and he even had a pawn ticket on him.
Back in W. Va, someone from the restaurant meets with Kendrick's security guy, telling him about Tom and Ellen.
Detective Huntley tells Patty they found Kevin Walker. He matches Purcell's description. He admits he was wrong. That's why he came personally. She says they'll want a line-up.
In the line-up Daniel struggles to pick out Kevin. He takes some time to think about it. He picks out Kevin Walker (not the gay lawyer from "Brothers & Sisters").
Daniel is released from jail and hugs his daughter as Patty looks on.
Claire Maddox shops in a street market with Kendrick. She tells him Daniel was released from jail and she thinks Wayne had something to do with it. She wants Kendrick to cut all ties with him. He says OK. She asks if "we" had anything to do with the murder. He laughs and says absolutely not.
Wayne gets a rub down while a man tells him their guy was arrested and Daniel's been released. Wayne tells the man (Darrell Hammond, with a Chapstick fetish) to drive out to Attica, Mr. Kendrick wants him to thank Mr. Walker.
Tom leaves a voice mail for Patty, telling her there's definitely a case there. Ellen goes to her motel room while Tom stops at a Mr. Pibb machine. "Hey! Mr. Pibb!" A man lurks up behind Ellen. It's Josh Reston.
They go talk in a field. His editor tracked him down. Purcell contacted Reston a few months ago when he read an obituary about a pig farmer who killed himself after all his livestock died. Tom asks about the bonfire on the side of the road and the smell. Reston says that's the dead livestock. The closer you get to Ultima's facilities, the more dead animals there are. Leukemia rates are also way up and anyone who speaks out against them is silenced. If someone were to step forward, they'd need protection. He tells them about the water sample he took, why they ransacked his house.
A man watches them.
Chapstick man meets with a scary-looking dude in prison, telling him he has a simple job for him. He wants him to deliver a message.
At home, Patty makes herself some tea and watches her son on the computer. She hovers. She says she'd like to talk to him about something.
Patty meets with Daniel at his country home, telling him they found Reston and he has a water sample. Daniel agrees to test it. Next she files a motion to expedite discovery. She'll need him to testify that Aerocyte is toxic and UNR knowingly ignored his warning. They killed his wife, he'll do whatever she wants. She pauses. Then starts, saying this might not be the right time but she told Michael about him. He'd like to meet him. Daniel thanks her and says he'd like that.
Michael meets Daniel at his country home. They walk out onto the dock. Patty (and the viewer) watches from afar, not able to hear. They seem to get along.
Patty tells the DA that she thinks Daniel's wife was killed as part of a cover-up involving a major energy corporation. Kevin had priors, but only for heroin possession, nothing violent.
At the prison, the scary dude with a message finds Kevin and tells him his family has been taken care of with a new condo. Kevin thanks him, then takes a shiv to the gut.
Leaving town, Tom is stopped by the sheriff and a veritable brute squad of hicks. They have reason to believe he's in possession of stolen property. Tom tells him it's an illegal search and seizure. Then Reston gets out of the Jeep and asks if there's a problem as the deputy looks for the water (he actually says that's what he's looking for).
In New York, Ellen comes in to Patty's office. She and Tom split up. She gives Patty the water sample. Patty says Daniel will go on record that Ultima doctored his report and committed fraud.
In court, Patty goes up against Claire Maddox, who argues Daniel shared proprietary information. The judge asks to hear from Daniel. Patty asks Daniel if UNR doctored the results of a study that he conducted.
Flash to Daniel standing on his dock, holding the water sample.
Back in court, he says they doctored nothing, their results are clean.
On the dock, he pours the water sample out into the lake.
In court he goes on, saying the documents he shared with Patty had nothing to do with Aerocyte.
Maddox asks for a dismissal and gets it easily. The judge chastises Patty for wasting the court's time. Patty storms out of court, steely and full of rage.
Back on the dock, someone walks up behind Daniel. It's Wayne, there with a friendly thank you. Daniel tells him to get off his land. Wayne tells him Kendrick just wanted him to know the first wire transfer went through. He and Erica will be provided for. He's been reasonable, and so will they. Daniel tells him again to leave.
3 Weeks Earlier Flash to Daniel in a car, in a tux the night of the murder. Chapstick man gets in the passenger seat. Then Kevin Walker gets in the backseat. Chapstick tells Kevin to pawn the ruby ring. All Daniel has to do is take a good look at Kevin. Chapstick tells Daniel everything's going to be OK, just go in the house and call 911.
