- After the sudden death of her older sister, a successful singer-songwriter finds herself facing their family's darkest memories as she fights to win custody over her adolescent niece from the girl's lawful but long-absent father.
- When singer-songwriter Sonne (25) is unexpectedly confronted with the death of her older sister Hannah, who leaves behind a daughter, Lotte (12), she drops everything in order to ensure that she gets custody of the girl. Even though Lotte's long-absent father, Kees, legitimately claims her. However, Sonne refuses to even allow Kees to see his daughter. No one, not even Lotte herself or Sonne's lover, understands what's gotten into Sonne, what drives her to put up such a fight and even cancel her tour. Her own mother declares she's being totally ridiculous. Sonne seems to be the only one who understands where her mother's vicious judgment is coming from. It will gradually become clear, through carefully parsed flashbacks, that from the moment he moved in with them, Kees not only abused Hannah, but also Sonne. Kees deviously infiltrated their family, taking clever advantage of their mother's low self-esteem, while she looked the other way when he abused her children, out of fear of losing him. When Hannah becomes pregnant by Kees, however, she leaves the house with him in order to protect Sonne. Sonne survived the abuse, but has never been able to talk about it. Music was her remedy, her upbeat persona and protective armour. Now she will be forced to speak. Her action has made a trial in court unavoidable, but she will only be able to save her niece from suffering the same fate as she did, if she wins the case. Ultimately Sonne will have to recognise that by speaking up she can help herself and by remaining silent she will only spare the perpetrator.
