About what you could hope
TBJCSKCNRRQTreviews26 April 2011
Licensed games tend to suck, and are certainly hardly ever great. This one fits the latter, not really the former. They're rushed, they're forced to follow whatever they are an adaptation of(especially when that's a movie), they're glitchy and they are occasionally downright incomplete(not the case here). With this one, this portion of the film was essentially already a video-game, only you weren't given a joystick. All they had to do was program and draw what was already there. And it seems like that's what they did. There may be new designs in this, but I certainly don't recall anyone in the motion picture not also in this, and yes, the leads do have the same voices(including Lost's Jack Shepard, and the hot Christina Ricci). I think the same is true of the tracks(please don't ask me if they're from the cartoon, I barely know of its existence), all 5(two laps to each, if length varies) of them(well, they made a couple of versions of each, at least), with a Las Vegas style one, one that takes you by and into(!) a volcano, one that's like being in a pinball machine and an island one. All of them are colorful, with tight corners and several have insane loops(you *will* drive upside down, repeatedly, in this, gravity gets broken like nobody's business, so during that, don't take your foot off the pedal, you'll fall off!). There are about a dozen and a half characters(most have to be unlocked, along with cheat codes(purely basic, "playing around with the code" stuff, they can be amusing enough) and a short compilation of concept art), each with their own car(and you can't make changes to it) with different stats(the usual, handling, strength, etc.). They'll taunt you(and yes, the tone is somewhat childish to all of this) every time you pass them or vice versa, and this can be kind of annoying(you can choose not to have the headshot and subtitles appear... thankfully, as it covers important things). The menus are kind of lazily(very cut and paste) and minimalistically done, and there are essentially no rule settings, you can choose arena and AI amount/difficulty from four levels. Why not something about any vehicle that explodes being out of the match, instead of it merely being delayed a bit? Yes, your mode of transportation has health in this, and if it runs out, "boom". You can take damage from running into the obstacles(only one type) on the track(there are also these things that let you briefly accelerate, keep an eye out, they can really make a difference), and from the Car-Fu. Yes, you can fight each other, and this goes into slow-mo whenever you hit with one of them(that's as far as they could go in doing the stylish thing, the cinematography is standard in this, of course). Land on or bump into the others, and try to get them out of control, by jumping, doing somersaults, tossing yourself sideways into them, launching yourself ahead, and spinning. That actually also grants you points, so if you think you aren't doing as well as you should(from where you place), try doing that more. Not only do you hold the Wii-Mote sideways like a steering wheel, you jut it up or to one of the sides(sometimes combined with the arrow pad) to pull off the aforementioned maneuvers, so it's incredibly immersive(you really feel like you're the one doing these things) and easy to get into to boot(yet allowing for a pretty reasonable range of moves). Heck, this does a great job of training you with the tutorial that is quickly gone through, and if you happen to forget, you can always go back and practice there. You may find yourself pointing in the completely wrong direction in this, and righting yourself is one of the biggest problems. Sliding allows you to proceed ahead when in that position, and that is easy to get into and out of, but it doesn't help in that situation. The T-180 that you chauffeur can do this at any time, and no, you won't necessarily stop instantly if facing the wrong direction, still, it can be an issue. They had to address this(it's in the Wachowski flick, and presumably the old series), and with their limited time, they did an OK job of it(mostly, this auto-corrects over a realistic period of time). Since you seldom go off the edge(yes, instead, you'll grind, something that can give you an advantage, not to mention save you if you're almost going over... don't linger, however, you'll do better for avoiding it) , maybe this needs a self-destruct button. As you move around in this, you'll gain Speed Boosts gradually, a meter will fill to allow 4 stages of it, the last one named The Zone, giving a psychedelic color shift and making you basically impossible to impact. You can choose to sacrifice some of this energy for repairs, you even get a second or so to do this right before you go kablooey. In this, you can go from 20th at the beginning of a lap to 1st at the end of it, and vice versa, it's always tense. Please forget the words "insurmountable lead". You go at 4-800 Km/h in this, and you can really tell. Game-play is fun and relatively addictive, if you won't stick with this that long after you start(there's not enough to do), so you may want to go for a rental. This allows split-screen MP, 2 players at the most at any given time, and can play almost the same stuff as in SP, including one of the 18+ championships(all of 2-5 races per), and if just one of you finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you'll win. Time Trial and a single one is of course also possible. Graphics are fine, and not a strain on the eyes in spite of what you might think. HUD is decent, a map would be ace. I recommend this to fans of the genre. 7/10

Speed Racing
hellraiser77 December 2020
This is another under the radar gem and another good, licensed game entry. When it comes to adaptations of the "Speed Racer" franchise their either up to speed or not. My favorite is the "Speed Racer" arcade game from the 90's which is also another under the radar gem and a story for another time. This one is a video game based on the live action film and it's really good as it pretty much focuses on the best thing about both the movie and TV series which is racing.

The graphical presentation is solid, I really like the designs of the tracks which are reminiscent of the futuristic racing games "F-Zero" and "Wipeout"; like with the live action film really love the amount of color. Both the backgrounds and the tracks are just lively and colorful enough to eat your eyes whole. Really like the designs of the cars which all look like the ones from the movie, surprised there wasn't a "Hot Wheels" toy line for them. Really like the music which is solid and fits like a glove as it's similar to the excited Michael Giamino score from the film.

Really like the characters and cars you get to play. Each of them are unique and have their strengths and weaknesses. As you win and progress though the tracks you roster of character to play grows.

One of the characters I like playing are Trixie, it's awesome she has race car of her own though shame it was never in the movie, though makes me wonder if we would have seen it had the film had a sequel; anyway it's just cool to play her, let alone one of my favorite characters in the movie/TV show. But of course, my favorite is Speed and the Mach 5 which is always one of my favorite fictional cars and is a little more balanced in the game, so it handles right. There are some features like speed up surface pads on the road to ride over giving your car a temporary boost, along with the boost you have but use them when you need to as you have a limited amount and takes a while to refill. You even have another feature which is the repair function, when your car is damaged as it's about to be on fire you can press the repair and the car will be as good as new. However, be careful as there is sort of double jeopardy as you might repair your car, you could also lose your chance to get ahead, depending on how much you use the repair button it will deplete energy from the boast gauge, so use both the boast and repair when needed and wisely.

You can also bump car as both offence and defense, if you bump your opponent just right and with the right amount of force, you get to earn some points which helps in your chances in ranking high, as it's not just about being in first place but also the quality of your racing. Also, there is this thing called alliances, as you progress you can actually form alliances with more racers whom will act as your bodyguards in covering you, so you can zip past the competition more easily. But you can lose those alliances if you accidently bump or do too much damage to their cars, so avoid hitting them at all costs.

Though the only disappointment in the game is you never get to use any of the buttons that bring out the defensive capabilities of the car, which to me is one weak point of the game. It's too bad there weren't any off road races where we could use them as the off-road races in both the movie and TV show anything goes. Or let alone for the game to have a story where we could not just have an ongoing story but action and chase sequences like one could have been like the arcade game "Chase H.Q." where the Mach 5 or any other player you play could chase down the mobster van from the movie. But I guess that would have made the game a bit too complicated and since this is a game that's focused on the sports aspect of the movie and TV series, so I can't complain much.

I even like the voice acting in the game which are just comments and quotation bubbles but fun to listen to giving the race a livelier feel almost like you are not just racing but involved in a manga in motion. But also getting a good feel for all the driver who are all colorful characters. Even like the voice cast which consists of a few familiar voices like Phil Lamarr as Snake Oiler. However, I really like that you have Emile Hirsch, Christina Richi, and Mathew Fox from the film to lend their voices, I always like it whenever people involved with a movie or certain other projects from the visual medium lend their voices which helps in giving you the feel of playing as the characters in the movie.

Overall, it's a solid licensed and racing game. Yeah, for the racing genre and subgenre of futuristic racing it's not one of the best in my book as it doesn't bring much or anything totally new in both; it's a B list game for both but still a like any car it's worth a test drive.

Deserves a Second Chance
corlevrob13 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This game has clear flaws but what is here has such amazing potential that it's so disappointing that Speed Racer may never get another shot in movies or games at least for many years. The game itself is similar to F-Zero but you focus on car combat where you try to spin and flip your opponents using the right analog stick and face buttons (or motion controls if you played the Wii version) I can't tell you how much fun my little brothers and I still have with this game years later as we all wonder about could have been. It's 2020 now and I picked up with game around 9 or 8 years ago. It's addicting and the controls or tight for the ps2 version. It's lack of story, content, and polish will drive away most or if you just don't like the Speed Racer movie in general (which I completely understand, it's so genuine and cheesy it hurts) But even though this game may have a few technical glitches and bare bones content, there is no denying that if they tried taking this gameplay and making it into a new Speed Racer game with todays graphical fidelity and polish, I'm sure they would have created something amazing. If you've got an old PS2 and want a interesting racing game that can deliver some fun, I would recommend picking this up since it's so cheap!
