This film is based on both Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir and Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron's Broadway musical of the same name.
The stage musical won five Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Musical, as well as Best Direction of a Musical for Sam Gold, Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Michael Cerveris (who played Bruce Bechdel) and Best Book of a Musical for Lisa Kron. She and Jeanine Tesori made history at that year's ceremony as becoming the first female duo to win the Tony for Best Score (music and lyrics).
The stage musical was nominated for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The stage musical premiered Off-Broadway at the Public Theatre on October 22, 2013. It's run was extended by several weeks and closed on January 12, 2014. It transferred to Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre on April 19, 2015 and played there for a year, ending its run on September 10, 2016, after 26 previews and 582 regular performances.
