A Trashy Foursome Gives Nice Area A Black Eye
ccthemovieman-129 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the profile of Elkhart more than the crime story. Elkhart is a small city I had heard of but couldn't tell you why. Now I know: it's the "RV Capital of the World" and the home of prominent aspirin-makers, band instrument makers and a few other products I'm familiar with. It also has a good sized Amish population on the outskirts of town. Elkhart is right on the northern edge of Indiana, not far from Michigan.

How the blue collar industrial folks mix in with the Amish was interesting. Overall, it looks like a nice town where folks get along just fine. City Confidential hints that maybe they get along too well, that they have become insular, locking themselves in and the outside world out.

One thing that got locked in was the foursome of two married couples. They appeared to be a bit trashy in nature and their attitudes put them all in bad situations. In fact, the crime story plays out like a bigtime soap opera. Of the two couples, one was killed, two were sent to jail and the fourth - perhaps the mastermind of the whole murderous affair - went away scot-free! This is the story of Carol, Gary, Lisa and Ron - best of friends.....at least for awhile. It's too complicated to sort it all out here. You can add in a brother-in-law to the mix, too, in this drive-by murder story. Suffice to say, City Confidental enjoyed all the soap opera facets of this story, which comprise most of it. The women seem to be more hardened than the men but none of them come across as good people or innocent victims. It gets pretty sordid.

Even the pretty town and surrounding area doesn't get off unscathed. At the end, a longtime resident says Elkhart has changed, that crime has risen substantially since this murder and it is far cry from the safe place it used to be.
