Just lay down and enjoy it
Odinson_Marvel15 August 2022
It's a quick movie for when you just wanna feel silly and have some laughs. The good thing about it is that it doesn't try to be more that it really is, and that's what makes it fun and decent.

if you are a film fan...
A_Different_Drummer23 June 2022
If you are film fan, you already know that one of the rarest kinds of films to stumble upon is a low-budget indie that actually delivers the goods. Especially when, as in this case, the film attempts to compete existentially with a known Hollywood blockbuster (Jumanji, on my list of 165+ best alltime films, check it out!) Especially when the credits show that the writer and the star are one and the same, usually a major red flag. Well, in this case it all comes together in a very pleasing way. The characters are relatable, the dialog is natural, and the horror creeps in slowly. A keeper.

That's really specific
nogodnomasters21 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film goes through some lengthy character introductions. We end up with four college friends getting together for Paul (Jim Mahoney) going through a heart breaking divorce to a very pretty girl (Shelley Hennig) who has fidelity issues. He is staying on a futon at his friend Cliff (Jon Bass). They are joined by Troy (Sarunas J. Jackson) a TV star who has fallen on hard times and Sam (Emmy Raver-Lampman) a successful producer. Cliff discovers a board game in his newly acquired and quite ugly credenza. We suspect the outcome is bad from the opening scene. After initially rejecting the game they decide to play and maybe read all the rules later.

The game starts out slow and then the questions on the cards seem to get specific. Eventually it turns into a supernatural" Truth or Consequences." The game must be finished by sunrise or else they are destined to play it for all eternity (I don't think it had that many cards).

The film was more comedy than horror. Friends must reveal their innermost secrets and feelings in order to press on.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Lower Budgeted Jumanji
cahidi29 June 2022
This movie is (in short version) Jumanji on a lower budget. Like way lower! But there in lies the compliment. Because low budget doesn't mean low quality, cause in my honest opinion, it holds the same quality as Jumanji (the original Jumanji, not the video game Jumanji). More or less. The comedy, super funny. The drama, touching. The horror, pretty chilling. The acting, well done. So to me, this movie deserves 7 stars.

GOOD!

Gatlopp Should Stand For Good In Sweden, Because This Movie Is Good!... I Like It Because It's a Truth Or Dare Movie But Done In a Unique Different Way, Matel Or Hasbro Needs a Game Like This So People Can Be Real With Each Other But Certainly Real With Themselves, a Game That Brings Out The Best In People Or The Worst!

Dissolving Into Hell
davidnhewko13 January 2023
If this movie's title caught your attention on your local streaming service, you'll probably like it. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. In fact, I enjoyed this so much, I would watch a sequel!

The story is what the IMDBs says it is, old friends reuniting over a drinking game that may or may not be from hell. Of course, nobody reads the rules, so how were any of them supposed to know that before they started drinking? The acting was good, I enjoyed the cast's chemistry. It was surprisingly good considering the characters seem to have almost nothing in common.

It has some funny, some thrills and something for your feelers. You'll probably like it.

Adult Jumanji with not so much horror really
FreakyDarling22 September 2022
It's a fun movie about friends going about life in their thirties. Love, heartbreak, life and death, you know... the usual things we all go through.

Then life throws you different curves balls, not usually in the form of a drinking game made to send you to eternal damnation, but hey science doesn't explain all.

It has a decent budget for being low. The acting was a bit over the top at times but it's a comedy and honestly well done.

I enjoyed it for what it is. People being put in unusual situations made to test their character and make them see who they really are. And hopefully come out of it together, stronger, and very likely alive.

It's ok but could've been better
WatchAndSmile24 June 2022
I like horror comedies, don't enjoy regular horror.

There isn't much horror here, if any. A little bleeding is nor horror. The movie had some good actors, good premise but could not deliver on the "thrilling/dire need aspects of even expectations and very little "horror" too. Movie could not fully mix horror and comedy to deliver a good ride. There was definitely some interesting parts that made me smile, but it wasn't enough.

If I had to rate: Comedy: 6/10 Horror: 2/10. (PG 9, ok for kids)

Not a Bad little film
mgsl-202355 December 2022
Actually, not a bad film. All actors where good, the film wasn't too preachy (a HUGE bonus!), the effect whereat too bad even though it had a low budget, the writing was good and the dialogue between the actors felt natural. It was quiet fun kept you engaged, and you actually felt for the characters as the story unfolded (there was a point where i actually welled up regarding things that were said, or should I say things that a character wished they had said! And the rest of their friends try to console them)

Good pacing as well and flowed nicely first film I think I have watched from start to finish without looking at my watch or getting distracted by my phone or in a lot of recent cases just some fluff off the dog's toy because that's how interesting films have been of late.

Pretty much garbage
fluffchop10 December 2022
The problem is the game and the characters aren't that interesting. Even at 1:20 it feels far too long. There's not one likable character or moment in the whole film. I didn't enjoy it and couldn't wait for it to be over. You can only spend so long waiting for something to happen before you realise nothing is going to happen. What you're seeing IS the film. There is no structure to the film. It's just one long first act. It goes nowhere. What's the payoff with this film? Nothing whatsoever. They're a bunch of boring characters that do nothing and the film goes nowhere. I didn't like it. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

It's my definition of a feel good movie
rubenssss384 August 2022
The plot and characters are good; funny moments and cool likable cast. I would definitely recommend on a movie date or even alone good job HBOMax.

It's like jumanji but with real people and real scenarios at least for me.

5.8/10. Watchable but not recommended
athanasiosze20 November 2022
It has nothing to do with horror. This is a comedy/fantasy movie. Funny, naive and sweet. 4 friends are playing this magical and dangerous game, and due to their fight for survival, secrets are being revealed. Imagine THE BIG CHILL (1983) and movies like this, in a comedy-fantasy version.

It's watchable and enjoyable and i wish more movies like this to be produced. Nowadays, many movies make you want to take anti-depressants (sort of speak), they are cynical, violent, dark and unpleasant. This one is lighthearted.

It's flawed, though. In order for the actors to convince the audience about how strong their friendship is, the viewer watches some (a bit) cringey and awkward scenes. Actors didn't fully convince me about their friendship, they try to look like there is a bond between them, but the chemistry was not entirely there. Maybe it was the writers fault, not theirs. There were some great acting moments though, mostly by Jim Mahoney and Emmy Raver-Lampman.

There is a strong possibility you will like it, if you are in the mood for something like that. I didn't regret watching this, i kinda enjoy it, but it's not good enough for recommendation.

The game was at the wrong house!
therealjaysmoke9 February 2023
Oh my gosh, can you imagine what it would have been like if the game was played at Andres house rather?! Instead, the writers decided to have it played by these boring, cool, friends with their twisted but not so interesting lives.

It wasn't a bad watch though, but I won't watch it a second time. I felt the acting was quite mediocre and the movie tried so hard to be smart but it just didn't work. I guess this can fall under the comedy category since the were some funny moments here and there, and pretty much that's that.

The picture was great, very Urban and diverse. Thank God there wasn't any WOKE culture happening here.

ops-525354 July 2022
But nevertheless joy to wtch, a boardgame movie is quite sometime since has been made in my recollection, a game where everything may happen, and it does...!

Just within the range of featurelenght, this comedy race back and forward on a cheap dime, and the cast is small but acts well.im afraid though that many people will shadow away at first glance cause its a slow starter, but as the game begins youll not regret a view. The grumpy old man gives a nurtourish 6 .i think my wife will cuddle this one in her arms...

Watchable, but not overly outstanding...
paul_haakonsen26 June 2022
I hadn't heard about the 2022 horror comedy "Gatlopp: Hell of a Game" prior to sitting down to watch it. So I wasn't sure what I was in for here. But I opted to give the movie a chance on the account of it being a horror comedy that I hadn't already seen.

Writer Jim Mahoney managed to churn out an adequate enough script and storyline for "Gatlopp: Hell of a Game", however, it just wasn't outstanding or all that innovative. Sure, the movie was suitable enough for a single viewing, but it just doesn't have the contents to support multiple viewings.

The storyline in "Gatlopp: Hell of a Game" was sort of reminiscent of the "Jumanji" movies in a way, though not as grand and spectacular, but also with a tad darker twist to it. I suppose that it why the movie found its way into the horror genre. It wasn't particularly scary though.

The acting performances in the movie were good. Keep in mind, though, that the movie is carried by a relatively small cast ensemble. They actually did fairly well enough, given the material they had to work with.

Sure, I will say that I was adequately entertained by "Gatlopp: Hell of a Game", though this is not a movie that I would be returning to a second time. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend horror comedy fans to rush out to get to watch; it just simply wasn't all that spectacular.

My rating of director Alberto Belli's 2022 horror comedy "Gatlopp: Hell of a Game" lands on a five out of ten stars.

OK, has its moments, but loses the initial buildup quickly
imdb-238218 July 2022
As a whole, it's serviceable, has moments that are pretty funny (I'm guessing many didn't fully appreciate the Apolcalypto gag) and an opening about the game that promises some crazy madcap fun. But it doesn't quite get there and the film feels padded for its relatively shorter running time as the characters learn more about themselves.

I wouldn't call this horr at all. It's almost like Jumanji but for relationships and lots of flashbacks to tell a story. This is more of a comedy than anything else, by far, which is also meant to mock LA and the film and TV / entertainment industry, which it does at times. Amusing but nothing extremely standout.

It was clear to me which actor wrote the script because he has virtually all of the best lines and moments. For the most part, the actors deliver reasonably well to sell this low budget film although I felt Jon Bass as annoying and miscast. Perhaps that was the intention but that, and several moments in the film, the script felt like a script and didn't quite flow. A good example of this was the ending. Cute - but the scene leading up to it felt contrived in many ways for the sake of a setup, which was unnecessary. There are these rough moments throughout, including a disjointed dance scene that didn't have enough connection of the dots to be convincing. Still... there is talent in the room.

Overall I liked it, being a strong average low budget film. It's a decent, watchable single view but not one you'd have to see again for the script or the performances. Unlike most of the pandemic straight to video garbage, this was a good effort and not regrettable.

Witty Fast-paced Movie!
randrox22 September 2022
Add me to the list of fans of this cute Indie movie with very likable character, and actors. I don't recall seeing any of the 3 male leads in other roles, but thought each was very good in their roles in" Gatlopp". The female lead is amazing, (and I know her name, but can't access at the mo.) and the 2nd woman lead was great in her part.

I found the script tight & snappy, And! I actually had tears in my eyes at one dramatic peak, even while realizing what a universal touch point it was, and how manipulative the script is being, while also getting some short, but genuine feels.

I laughed, I cried! All in all, I enjoyed this really sweet-natured fun movie.

Plain awful
battlecrusadersgames30 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This will be quite a short review, because there really isn't much positive i can say about it.

The story, revolves around a board game that punishes liars and cheats in the real world. Sound like Jumanji, that's because it is. Except one difference, Jumanji is superior in every way (and yes that even includes Dwayne Johnsons version).

They market this as an adult movie because it's a 'comedy horror' but that isn't entirely true, because it's not scary. An arrow in the leg is about as scary as it gets. Honestly, Jumanji is almost as scary.

As for the humour element, well lets say i find more humour in a new broadcast then i did this film. I didn't laugh once, not even a smirk.

So for board game type movies, of which there are plenty, i'd advise sticking to Jumanji for comedy or if you prefer a little more whimsy, try Zathura.

Has everything...except decent acting!
Go_For_The_Jugular24 June 2022
Looks and sounds great...but the acting is woeful!

It's like a multi-millionaire made a film with their non-acting college buddies, but hired the best film crew and editing team that money can buy.

What a waste!

It's not funny, scary or interesting.
brazadoz27 September 2022
The description states that they quickly discover that the game isn't a game...30 minutes into a 2 hour movie. The characters seem like self absorbed wailers. I couldn't warm up to any of the characters. They were all unhappy in their lives, work and relationships. Their friendship seems based on playing pranks on each other when they're passed out from drinking to excess, instead of trying to help each other they just moan and have more beer. So, this movie could be about drug dependent people playing a drinking game and maybe hallucinating hell in place of having DT's? The actors did well with the material but, for me, it was slow and dull.

Awesome movie! what's not to like?
shangolakoss30 June 2022
Give it a try you will not be disappointed, it's simple but nice, good acting, good comedy.

Me and my family really enjoyed this show. It's way better than half the shows coming out these days.

I hope they make good money off of the show. Critics keep pushing the wrong movies at cinemas, this show deserve big screen.

Just felt like it was missing something
bowmanblue12 December 2023
Sometimes you come across a film that you just can't place. After watching 'Gatlopp' I honestly don't really know whether I liked it or not. I managed to make it until the end (quite a lot of what I find on streaming services get turned off half way through!) so at least it held my attention for an hour and a half.

It's about four friends getting together to generally chat about old times, when one of them suggests they play a mysterious board game. Naturally, there's more to it than your average game of Monopoly and soon supernatural shenanigans start to take over the night.

Each of the four characters has to work through their individual 'demons' in order to 'win' their part of the game. It's supposed to be a 'comedy,' but I couldn't really find an awful lot of laughs contained within - it was more a supernatural character-based drama, but at least the four leads all had their time to take centre stage. At first they seemed like the types who would never really be long-term friends, but, as the film progressed, they actually developed more chemistry and you could probably see them hanging out back in the day.

It's got enough nice touches in it to make it worth your while if you find it part of your own streaming package, but it's not the sort of film you'd probably feel is worth paying full price for a cinema ticket.

I'm gonna be honest here...
maliknhussain128 June 2022
I'm only 20 minutes in and haven't fully watched the movie. But I had a really weird compulsion to come here and say that even after 20 minutes, I really like the vibe the four main characters have with each other. They honestly almost feel like a "real" group of friends and just from that I'm going into this movie positively. I will update after I finish.

Fingers crossed!

Watched it all, I absolutely adored it! The one critique I have is that it is a little rushed.

Characters are likeable, acting is on point, and it's pretty self-explanatory. I really enjoyed it.

Run the gauntlet
begob27 June 2022
A guy going through a messy divorce is consoled by old friends during a drinking game, but the game just got dangerous ...

Not quite a horror - more truth-or-dare jeopardy in the working out of past issues through some home truths. The writing, direction and editing are very clever, leading us crisply through well-conceived scenes and establishing the characters and dilemmas with crystal clarity.

Performances are all good, with one reservation about the dubbing trick, which I found a little unconvincing. The only other drawback is the jeopardy ain't hard enough for horror, but that's conceded all along in the archness of the music score, and my own preferences shouldn't put off anyone who leans more toward the comedy side of the genre.

Overall: Nice little package, delivered in style.

JUMANJI for grownups
Irishise22 September 2022
I'm not sure why it's classified as horror, unless being forced to face adulthood is your nightmare. This comedy was fantastic! For a lower budget film, the visual quality was great, the actors were perfectly cast, direction did not get in the way of anything, and editing was spot on. As an over the top fantasy, the actors filled out the characters so well that I could believe they were longtime friends going through modern day life with all the tears and anger and laughter that gets thrown at them. The situations get harder to be honest with a the game progresses, just like life. And, just like in life, sometimes game revenge can be sweet.
