Parcival by way of The Grudge with a Pulp Fiction twist
el74 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is really more of a 4.5 but I can't quite bring myself to up the grade to 5. This movie requires some patience, because in the beginning our heroine is a legitimately terrible person, and she remains that way for the first half of the movie. Donna is a reporter for a Buzzfeedesque news outlet who has been trying to get her cartoonishly evil boss to give her good leads, but is not having any success because she is interested in covering serious news and her boss just wants hits. Donna accidentally receives a hot tip meant for one of her more successful coworkers, and as she runs with it, she attracts a curse to herself by being a terrible person. No, really. Watch what she does and see if you don't agree. In the process of figuring out the cause and effects of the curse, Donna grows a conscience, and this part of the story is genuinely interesting, however it takes a while to get there. In the meantime, you're stuck sitting there going 'what the hell... she did not just put that necklace on' and other reactions to her thoughtless behavior. One character describes her petty revenge attacks in their college newspaper as an example of her being a strong person, but no... that's just her being vindictive. Anyway, eventually she does manage to figure out enough of the curse to realize her own culpability and try to stop it, but there's a twist that leads to a rather runny set piece in which two characters try to hide from a ghost and then think they can sneak out of a building while the ghost's back is turned. Only in Scooby Doo does that ever work. Then it's got one of those frustrating endings in which we're expected to believe that someone who accidentally set a vengeful ghost on people is supposed to be prosecuted for it in a court of law (or should be, for that matter). But overall it's pretty watchable.

I wanted to like this movie...
rhed_santiago28 February 2021
As a film released in 2020, I expected that Filipino horror film creators to take note of the multiple criticisms Philippine horror has accrued over the previous decade. However sadly, this film let me down. On top of the overuse of jump scares, I also noticed that the plot heavily relies on the main character's stupidity and lack of common sense. Because of this, instead of empathizing with the character, I am led to questioning their judgment, and laughing at their choice of actions (Not a good sign of an immersive experience). Hope that this is not the best that Philippine Horror has to offer.

Tedious Asian horror
Just seemed longer than its running time. Unlikeable lead actress. Stereotypical Asian horror ghosts who got more ridiculous looking as the film slowly progressed. Unbelievable coincidence at the end involving an address. Cris Villonco was highlight as the uptight boss Monique. So beautiful. All in all a good effort from the Phillippines but deadly dull.

Bad acting, script, camera flow, not even a single cinematography. looks amateur. they just used kim chiu for the highlight of the film. This movie is a total disaster. dont waste your time watching this. just an ordinary filipino typical movie.

Trying too hard
ellardabanto25 January 2021
The jump scares were too obvious. Horrible acting and storyline. The reactions were too forced. Had to finish the movie to give it a chance of redemption, and now I want my time back.

Ugly shallow story.
bolshoix1327 December 2020
Plot of stories is very shallow. I think the writer doesn't know how to think what justice and revenge. A horror film so nursery.

Interesting movie is all I could say.
dreiisabastard4 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was quite shallow. Cheap scares, and half-cooked plot. I watched the original movie beforehand and it was not that good in the first place, but still, it had more substance than this. The mystery was quickly stripped when it was already revealed that the ghosts were responsible for the deaths. One thing I can applaud about the original is that it still played with the idea of true crime, because the ghosts weren't revealed until the end. In the original, even though it was obviously supernatural, it still had that feeling of true crime.

I also would have liked it if they focused more on the part that Donna was a suspect. In the original, her being the suspect played a huge role in the plot but in this, it was kind of overridden halfway through and they just focused more on the supernatural aspect.

This movie also took a lot of inspiration from, I'm guessing, Ju-On. The scares are "Same old, Same old". The ending was also kind of, eh. Still trying to process it. It's definitely interesting.

I also would like to say that almost none of the characters were love-able nor interesting. Donna definitely was kind of a villain here, right? The only interesting and love-able character was her twin, which they killed off early on for the scare of course. I liked Kim Chiu's acting, she's got a lot more to show. I'm also just confused as to why her character felt the need to "Harapin mo ko", proceeded to take the U-turn, and then when they DID confront her, she was scared? Huh.. Like what was that about? Anyway, I have some good things to say too.

Budget was definitely high but that's expected. The atmosphere of the U-turn here was eerie. Although in a more realistic sense, the original movie's U-turn scared me a lot more. Since it was public, busy, and definitely inevitable. Which would then cause a lot of people taking the U-turn to die, without even knowing they did anything wrong. Their acting was bearable too.

Overall, un-inspired, but tried. The director definitely had an idea in mind, a good one. It was just not properly executed.

Story was bleh but the acting was pretty good.

Warning: Spoilers
The plot could've been more sinister, maybe adding a bit more concrete scary scenarios would've made this film nicer instead of just having a fully made up witch chick crawl on the dirty floor. It lacked the spice of a real horror movie BUT it's not super horrible. Amidst all these, Kim Chiu still shined in the movie. She's capable of resuscitating this lackluster film and kinda put a pulse in it. Even if it's bradycardic.

Sadly, the worst horror movie Ive ever watched - SPOILERS
qtrastak8_yummy5 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Story line is bad, script is bad, bad character build up and I just can't believe many people would cross Uturn with a signage not to cross and would still cross (just like people are all undisciplined) and the role of Kim (the lead) is so annoying..

Very Impresed.
heatnation-486469 September 2021
This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat for the entirety of it. It has you paying attention to a bunch of different things at once. Which is what you want from a movie of this caliber.

It has a GREAT script, GREAT directing and of course the actors were AMAZING. There was not one bad actor in the entire movie.

If you want a movie that will get you involved and keep you guessing to the very end, as well as giving you a quality scare factor with AMAZING special effects. Then look no further. You will thoroughly enjoy this GREAT movie.

Do yourself a favour and watch this movie, you won't be disappointed.

I am a very hard person to impress and I was EXTREMELY IMPRESSED.

One time watch, go for it if you're a world cinema enthusiast
kedireturns24 December 2020
Apparently this is a remake of a Kannada movie. So I was skimming through the original kannada movie to find anything that was better, but I'm thoroughly impressed by the filipino remake in that there are almost no resemblance to each film. It's a inspiration for sure which the Filipino movie actually says so.

The movie itself I found it engaging for the most part if you watch it as a movie and not become too logical. The 3rd Act could've been better. Slight pacing issues in parts otherwise a one time watch for curious cats like me who like to explore world cinema. My first Filipino film done! ✅

Good at the onset, disaster towards the end
joyceeblue8 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So we've seen this U-Turn movie in Netflix w/c is a Filipino adaptation of an Indian movie w/ the same title. Not exactly my favorite horror movie. Stellar cast so I expected a top notch horror movie. It was chilling at the onset but the scenes grow on you and you start asking why this multo is beginning to move and act like a zombie ...then an emotional wreck the next instance. Intriguing story but there are a lot of good, creative Pinoy horror films that's been shown (why is there a need for an adaptation when it's not that good anyway).

Waste of Time. Shallow Plot
chapkizzes22 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Kim Chiu gave the ghosts the address to find the killer but why does she have to do that when the ghosts have actually followed and knew the addresses of the victims who took the U-Turn without even asking anyone. What a shame!!! Also, the scripts are shallow.

Should've checked reviews before watching
lunateec8 December 2020
I had a feeling that the movie is going to be a letdown in the first 10 minutes. My wife insisted we finish it and she regretted it.

If you are looking for a sign to watch this movie or not, this is it.

Annoying
urbanracal20 December 2020
So annoying, it doesn't even have that "it's so bad that it's fun" appeal. Total trash! I don't understand what draw Kim Chiu and Tony Labrusca could have on Filipinos.

One of the worst.
jutubesunday7 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've never thought I would dislike a main character as much as I did in this movie. The first 10 minutes into the film I wanted her to die. Her ignorant and bad character were just unimaginable. So much negatives to say about the lead character so I won't even go there. Over all, this movie sucks big time. Characters are terrible! A waste of time.

Oh, I love how the ghosts are so human-like. They actually go search for you and while the ghost mother floats at times, then walks at times, then crawls at times. The ghost daughter walks like a normal little child with shadows and all. They look more like flesh eating zombies than anything else.

The second worst part of the movie after the lead character is how she is able to touch all those victim's bodies. Common sense you don't mess up a crime scene. And you don't just go touch dead bodies. Those dead people should have haunt the lead character imo. Anyhow, bad script writing shows limited research from writers, directors. Sorry for the negative comments but I really need to let it out after I tried so hard to finish this movie.

bad movie is bad
vaynelevant9 January 2023
The very reason why i registered here in IMDB was because of this garbage they call a film. Why was my review deleted?! I forgot what i previously wrote but i am rewriting a new review because i want to help other people not waste their time consuming garbage.

Anyway, if you're looking for a reason to possibly watch this movie. You won't find it here. The start had premise but they botched the delivery and execution. Don't waste your time watching this. The 10/10 review is an abomination and should be deleted lol. If you're looking to watch a better tagalog horror flick, go watch feng sui instead.

Angry Ghosts
Pairic19 December 2020
U-Turn (2020): A treacherous stretch of road but people don't just die on the road itself. Those who make u-turns at the spot are followed home by spirits and killed, police classify the deaths as suicide. A journalist investigates these demises and her actions attracts the attention of the angry ghosts. A Philippines remake of a 2018 Indian film. Some good scary scenes with a little girl appearing, first giggling, then blood stained and crying. Her mother is much more fearsome, a wraith, sometimes just her arm;hand appearing. These angry ghosts can force their victims to harm themselves and others. Not great but worth watching. Directed by Roderick Cabrido, written by Cenon Palomares. On Netflix 6/10.

Warning: Spoilers
This has nothing to do with biker gangs, it's about people who make an illegal u turn, it's a nice wee horror with ghosts killing people, it's a remake of an Indian film and it's subtitled.

U-Turn (2020)
nebohr14 March 2023
U-Turn is a B-movie of the thriller/ suspense/ horror genre.

Decent acting with, what seems to be basically rudderless direction.

Both my wife and myself very rarely watch anything Asian; since their culture is so hard to relate to; being so vastly different from that of the West.

Inconsistent English dubbing, along with inconsistent English closed-captioning. Additionally, it's hard to both take in the scenes and read the CC because of the poor pacing.

Decent special effects.

Hollywood cliché #194: there will be an unruly crowd at a crime scene minutes after the police first arrive.

A crime scene tape perimeter is to ignored.

It is perfectly acceptable to steal from the dead because, like, what are they going to do about it?

In a Western country Donna would have been arrested. Several times.

Better turn around, trust me...
paul_haakonsen10 November 2023
When I stumbled upon this 2020 Filipino horror movie on Netflix, I had never heard about it, and given my fascination with both horror movies and Asian cinema, then of course I opted to give director Roderick Cabrido's movie a fair chance.

While I did manage to sit through the 98 minutes that the movie ran for, I have to say that I was only mildly entertained by the narrative. Writer Cenon Palomares didn't exactly deliver a particularly riveting narrative or script for director Roderick Cabrido to bring to the screen. It was, in fact, a rather boring story that actually made very little sense.

And even the character gallery in the movie was somewhat boring as well, and that didn't exactly help to lift up an otherwise stale and bland storyline and script.

The acting performances in the movie were fair enough. I wasn't familiar with the cast, aside from Martin Del Rosario.

For a scary movie then "U-Turn" wasn't particuarly effective, as there was nothing scary in it. That, or perhaps I am just jaded from about 40 years of watching horror movies.

I have to say that there simply is zero replay value to "U-Turn", provided you get through it the first time around, that is.

My rating of "U-Turn" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Decent enough if slightly flawed Filipino horror
Tweekums29 April 2023
This Filipino film is centred on Donna, an investigative journalist wanting to report on more interesting stories. To this end she is willing to photograph accident victims, even moving bodies for a better shot. This particular incident took place on a stretch of closed road where somebody had moved warning barriers. Soon afterwards others who U-turn on this stretch of road start dying; the authorities believe them to be suicides but Donna's investigation leads her to believe they are connected to using that road. With the help of Kevin, a friend in the police, she aims to prove it. In the process she puts herself in danger.

When I watched this I had no idea that it was a remake of an Indian film and as I've not seen the original I can't say how they compare. I thought the story had some interesting ideas and these led to some enjoyably creepy scenes. The ghost effects are pretty good; done physically rather than obvious CGI... the scariness was unfortunately lost towards the end when one of the ghosts speaks to the person who inadvertently caused her death. The acting is solid enough; especially from Kim Chiu, who plays Donna. I liked the fact that the lead character wasn't the typical 'Miss Perfect', many of the things she did to get stories were certainly both immoral and illegal. Overall I wouldn't call this a must see but if you are looking for a horror film made somewhere different it is worth watching.

These comments are based on watching the film in Filipino with English subtitles.
