Well Sanitized and A Different Version of Kashyap
khayaldave5 June 2020
Choked. Anurag Kashyap.2020 The film movie ever made keeping the illustrious "Demonetization" in the main plot. The film has exceedingly well written first half, neatly expressed empathy between the couple, chemistry with inquisitive neighbors but somehow it misses the mark at the very end. The last 15 minutes of the film looks more like a patch then a proper fulfillment to a well-made thriller. Saiyami Kher is excellent in her role as a disappointed, vulnerable and ambitious bank employee. Choked runs heavily on the traditional background score but in some places it airs a tad loud. Choked metaphorically means various things in the film from corruption to a not so happy relationship and from doomed future to current condition of the country.

This film might get an extremely polar reviews for some of its political stand and approach against the current government. It's an extremely well sanitized and different version of Kashyap.

It's Uninteresting And Waste of Time..

Warning: Spoilers
🎬 CHOKED (2019) REVIEW . . 📜 Plot : A bank employee weighed down by her jobless husband's debts - and her own broken dreams - finds a secret source of seemingly unlimited cash in her home. . . 👨‍⚖️ Review : A satirical drama to expose the flaws of demonitisation that happened in 2016. The premise had so much potential to be explored and presented but none was executed. I hate to believe this is an Anurag Kashyap movie. . . 👍 Goods : The after effects of Demonitisation are presented here and has some good meaningful arguments against it. . . 👎 Bads : Actress Amruta Subhash of such huge caliber did overeacting throughout the movie. The movie becomes predictable, uninteresting after interval. - 🔥Final Rating : 5/10 . . ✅ Recommendation : Just Ignore. .

An unusual thriller, yet not disappointing
pranayjalvi5 June 2020
Choked is a unique kind of movie directed by Anurag Kashyap. With demonetization as a backdrop, Choked explores the power struggle at every level - including those who belongs to middle-class.

It's all about dreams and aspiration of a middle class Maharashtrian family. The performance were good, but not great. The movie could have been much stronger with more tight screenplay. Choked is smart, but not smart enough that mildly satisfied the depth and struggles of a middle-class family.

Choked had much higher expectation, being an Anurag Kashyap film. But the movie had just enough qualities and moments that didn't disappointed.

My Rating : 3/5

Anurag Kashyap is the new RGV!

Choked is dull & unbearable. Can't believe this is the director who gave us Gangs of Wasseypur. Netflix again disappoints with the choice of Indian content they are making they need to learn something from Amazon Prime.

Warning: Spoilers
Very Mediocre thriller, started off very well then falls flat. Saiyami Kher does looks promising and would love to see her in more movies. That's it.. An good actor cannot drag a poor written script.

Engaging film with some faults
tpatoliya5 June 2020
Netflix Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai, made on the background of demonetization, focuses on the ups and downs of the relationship.

When Prime Minister Modi brings demonetization on 8 November 2016 in the film, the story takes a different pace.

The film's story is served with a historical judgment of relationship and demonetization. This film refreshes the memories associated with the 2016 note ban.

Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai also emphasizes that the effect was thought about demonetization. Did not happen as they believe.

Even middle-class families were emotionally killed here. The black money holders managed to keep it in the new note as well.

It is a smart film written by Nihit Bhave that concerns itself with more than the cause.

The film is initially complicated. But the way the film's story is presented. She keeps you tied However, the film's climax remains weak. Looking at the film, it seems like he had to finish in a hurry.

There is a lack of clarity and sharpness for which Anurag Kashyap is known.

Netflix Choked wants to say a lot but is not as hard-hitting or too entertaining as its tweets.

Saiyami Kher can save this film in terms of acting. She has been great. Her role is powerful, which she has played well.

However, the character of Saiyami repeatedly goes back to her past, which affects the pace of the film. But this is not her fault.

Roshan Mathew is well in his character Sushant. Many times his role gets angry at seeing his character, which shows his quality as an actor. This young actor has an impressive personality and speaking eyes.

Amrita Subhash's work is also good. However, she is inconsistent as it is warm and swells in parts. The character of Rajshri Deshpande is worth watching.

As I have already said, you will not see the original Anurag Kashyap, but the way the story is captured is fantastic. He has shown the middle-class in Mumbai very well.

The film's dialogues are strong, and many conversations lighten the mood of the film.

Overall Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai is an engaging film. Despite some faults, the film is successful in entertaining you, so you can give your time to watch it.

A good story blended with a perfect screenplay.

One loose end in the movie is a he relation between sarita and Reddy. What made her to sleep with Reddy? When he has no relation with the money she found, why did she got scared of him and went with him to the hotel?

Chaotic and confusing narrative
qui_j6 June 2020
This could have been an interesting film were it not for the fact that it was poorly scripted and executed with chaotic editing, both of which lead to a total lack of continuity. Scenes appeared to be out of sequence, and at times no explanation was offered for certain events in the film. This resulted in a lack of understanding of these events, and a loss of interest in the film itself. Not a film for a global audience.

Fair picturization of the demonetization days
yaseerrizwan5 June 2020
Anurag Kashyap has once again portrayed the struggle of public in the days following the mindless decision of demonetization. Long unending queues outside banks, bank employees working overtime to cater to thankless, frustrated public and the consequences that impacted all of us.

Saiyami Kher has played her part superbly. Well done Kashyap and team.

Definitely not the Anurag, we know..but still worth the watch
nikhar-oza6 July 2020
When you walk into an Anurag Kashyap movie, you expect to see the true face of Human Nature, you expect to see brilliant long shots, and above all an airtight plot.

Sadly, this is not your average Anurag Kashyap movie by any stretch of imagination. This is not even close to his average.

Having said that, I Ioved the premise of this movie.

How would you like if I said that your house's choked pipeline coughing up cash everynight? Fairytale, ain't it? The Protagonist here is a bank cashier and apparently the only breadwinner of the house, while his husband is a lazy, complaining no-good. Choked may on surface seem to be a title pointing at the Choked pipeline of protagonist's house, but there is a lot more to it as the story takes a spin when Prime Minister of India announces demonitization.

Upto this point, the movie holds it ground. However, it is the scenes post demonitization which could have been better. Also, it doesn't venture into the usual Kashyap territory, once this twist happens.. it surprisingly remains a formidable underdog story.. something which we surely don't expect from an AK movie.

Yet, there are flashes of brilliance in this tale. No one captures Bombay in lens better than Anurag Kashyap, period. He yet again manages to create a choked environment in the city quite efficiently. In terms of some characters too, his observations are worth noting, be it the pesky neighbors or the cash hungry goons or the lazy husband. The relationship between protagonist of the movie and her husband may not be the best you have seen on screen, but the naunces that Kashyap brings to the table are worth appreciating. You will see the familiar Anurag Kashyap, in a scene where both husband and wife use their son as a referee in an argument asking him to identify the liar while quarreling.

About the acting in this movie... Saiyami Kher puts in a decent performance. Her Sarita looks like an average Mumbaikar middle class woman. She is a South Indian who has acquired a maharashtrian twang and she kinds of nails it. Roshan Mathew as the lazy husband is a delight to watch although by that I mean you will surely dispise him atleast in some scene. But the show-stealer to me was Amruta Shubhash. What a performance! She gives a memorable performance as an intruding yet caring neighbour.

All and all as I said, definitely not the Anurag Kashyap, we have come to love over the years but surely a different version of him.

Kashyap takes his audience for granted..He has stopped working hard
user-259856 June 2020
I am an Ex-Fan of Kashyap and his last some work has only disappointed me. Everything about this movie is bad except actor's performances who thought they might shoot into critics lap after doing a Kashyap film. Kher is a beautiful girl and can land big roles in big movies but she is suffering from actor's problem of trying to prove themselves. The story is weak and it is like literally no work in done on the screenplay. Climax is dull and makes you realize that you have been fooled to watch this entire film.. and for what .. for this. Hurried venture which was made to Mock demonetization but earn money from it by selling it to Netflix on high prices which it obviously doesn't deserve.

Good one from Anurag Kashyap!!
sriramthestranger6 June 2020
The plot is about a family survived by the wife and a husband trying out his luck in music. The casual conversation in the family, and with the apartment mates evokes smile.

One thing I liked about is the juxtaposed nature of the characters - the husband praising PM Modi while the wife is totally frustrated about it, the neighbor laughing about demonetization and then worrying about her daughter's wedding and an aunt who does not liked to be called 'aunty' and more.

There are enough twists and turns in this movie that makes it an entertaining one. The apartment life and kitty parties are captured realistically. The music was different and brilliant especially in the final segments of the film. The whole plot revolves around "lucky God sent money" and keeps you guessing where this will go about and end..?

We are a tiny part of the universal whole
ridi-arahan7 June 2020
What worked:
  • screenplay and the narration; there has been concerns and biases regarding the screenplay but for me it worked. The movie is light hearted, fun and engaging, and the story revolves around the topic that actually happened in the finance system. The interactions and rapport between the characters is convincing.
What did not work:
  • the movie is not without plot holes and I would agree that the scenes driving the conclusive statement of the movie could have been worked and had areas of improvement.
  • screenplay; one of the reason the narration did not work, in my opinion, is the thin line and linear direction of the story, which in itself is not a bad thing. Many movies have had the similar theme, mood and climate, and worked in cinemas all around the world. If only the story was glorified and glamorized to fit the taste of the audience it is basically gravitating, it would have been tastier and appealing for the majority masses. Another reason maybe the story is light and humorous unlike his previous conventional movies.
Final verdict: Recommended. I liked it so I just ignored the harsh criticism for the movie.

Anurag's AAG
nevermind_875 June 2020
Like every Bollywood movie these days, you should wait for the real reviews to come out. The first few reviews are usually reviews written by fanboys. To this you can also now add Kashyap's twitter followers who will lap up everything he says. But slowly the real audience reviews start coming out and we know the true aukat of the film. Manmarziyan was painful to sit through after 15 minutes. Choked is not as painful but dull and boring for a thriller.

jatinmanocha-4230612 June 2020
Right from the word go, this movie engages you in its world and characters with brilliant star cast and performance from even the supporting cast members. The main crux of the story always keep you engaged in the movie with every emotion being felt by the viewer.

It shows the dreams and aspirations of the middle class family, their struggles, their reactions to day-to-day situations very aptly.
