Lovely modern take on Romeo and Juliet!
cafarkas13 March 2021
I don't usually write reviews but I felt the need to counter the many negative comments about Rosie Jones. I thought she did a brilliant job and was very funny. I had NO problem understanding her because I have listened to a lot of different accents on various British shows. If I have trouble with a particularly thick accent, I just turn on the subtitles so I don't miss some of the slang or colloquialisms. (Sometimes even the subtitles are incorrect.) Too those complaining about "too much" inclusiveness in S and H episodes, I say wake up, part your prejudices, and enjoy the show. Thank you to all involved for showing some of the vast diversity in British society and treating ALL as fellow countryfolk. This was one of my favorite episodes - a great combination of humor, mystery, paranormal, hidden secrets.

Good old Lill.
Sleepin_Dragon13 February 2020
A painting is stollen from a pub, Old Lill, at a time where the owner, Melanie Montague is attempting to renew the pub's lease from developer Stephen Capulet. Suspected is local Ghost Hunter Penelope Lawrence.

Pretty silly this one, it's of course light hearted, but the balance was a little too much in the favour of the comedy than the drama. It's like a Carry on Film mixed in with Most Haunted, with The Librarian from Dear Ladies (Hinge and Bracket.)

Is Viola the only member of The Police on duty?

Penelope Lawrence, Ghost Hunter was great fun, and Richard Lintern added a touch of class, as he so often does, fresh from his role in Silent Witness.

It was somewhat obvious from the first few minutes who the guilty party was, it was decent, but others in the series have been way better. 6/10

Not their best. Could have been a little better with a little sound editing.
scanlonjg3 November 2020
I found the plot a bit boring and it could not hold my interest. It did not have any help in the choice of the guest actress, whose performance was grating, to say the least. I routinely use "closed captions" for TV shows set in places with accents with which I am not overly familiar. So it was easy enough for me to understand the character played by Rosie Jones. I was interested enough to look up her background and saw that she does have a form of cerebral palsy. What put me off was not so much the cadence of her speech, but the volume of it. Perhaps it is a carry-over from her comedy stage work, as in the need to "project" out to an audience. I simply found it irritating, and ruining the performance. I'm sure she is a fine comedienne, and has many fans, and perhaps she shines in other acting work. But not this one.

Ghost's R Us

Warning: Spoilers
I don't normally want to include other people's comments in my reviews, but in this case I have to. I have to pick up on the comment of, "the actress playing the ghost hunter being supposedly disabled".

I don't know the actress in question a Rosie Jones, but I took the trouble to do the basic minimum of Research. She is a comedienne a writer and performer, with cerebral palsy. I thought that she played her part well, and I will certainly look out for again.

In this episode Frank and Lou do their usual comment when introduced of, "we're business partners". With Frank looking down his nose at Lou, partly saying "I wouldn't". Well Frank look at yourself you're certainly no oil painting, unless you painted it.

Is it my imagination but the actor Mark Benton, appears to have increased in girth with each succeeding episode?

Here the sleuths are searching a premises, with Frank blundering around like a heffalump and not a baby one.

Couldn't follow
rachelchaney20 January 2021
It has taken me 3 days to watch this episode. Yes I understand the desire to be inclusive but I would think it would be more important for watchers to understand and enjoy the show. As one other reviewer put it the disabled actress' performance was grating. It gave me a headache, I couldn't easily understand what she said making it difficult to follow the episode and very hard to enjoy it. I needed to go back to see what was said which was frustrating, gave me a headache.

Montagues, Capulets, and a ghost hunter!
csilvasilva31 October 2020
Comedian Rosie Jones plays a hilarious ghost hunter called in by the owner of a pub. Frank and Lou are looking into the pub too, trying to piece together who damaged the bar and stole the portrait of "Old Lil." Is Old Lil's story just quaint legend or does her portrait hold the truth of who has rightful ownership of the pub? Understanding the speech of others can sometimes require careful attention. My father easily managed the pidgin of his native Hawaii but couldn't make heads or tails of anything from the BBC. I find it helpful to use subtitles while watching Shetland. Rosie Jones speaks slowly and carefully, and in that way her comedy sneaks up on the viewer. A little attentive listening rewards viewers with a performance by one of Shakespeare & Hathaway's funniest guest stars in years!

Inclusionary casting is often good, but this didn't work
altereggo12327 February 2020
I love this series and would normally rate it much higher than. 5. I also understand the desire of TV shows (and sometimes sports teams and others) to give disabled actors an opportunity to participate. A key actor in this episode apparently suffers from "ataxic cerebral palsy." It profoundly affects her speech. At first I thought she was deaf, because her pronunciation was so halting and garbled. I had to watch some scenes twice just to make sure I understood what was going on.

Her solo standup comedy may work better, because she can write her own material and perform it at her own pace. But in this show, she had a role to play, scenes to do, lines to recite. I just couldn't follow the episode.

Fun If You Are Smart and Not Mean Spirited
revchristodd18 October 2020
I always use closed captioning when watching British dramas because some UK accents are difficult to understand for us Yanks. Thus I was not thrown off by the speech of the actress with cerebral palsy. Overall the episode was enjoyable with a lot of laughs. Plus there is an interesting spin on one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies.

I had to put on subtitles to understand some of the dialogue
sandra-3113919 March 2020
This episode was a bit below par. I generally love this series but I could not understand the speech of the ghost hunter character who was played by a disabled actor. I realise the BBC like to be inclusive but it did not work here.

Audience shows their true colors
kristenmerek10 September 2023
Don't pay attention to the low ratings of this episode. The story is interesting and fun and fits with the vibe of the show. Unfortunately, the creators had misplaced faith that their audience would be welcoming and accepting of a diverse casting choice. Instead, they're here whining about having to pay closer attention or using closed captioning for ONE EPISODE. Plenty of folks rely on captions 100% of the time to allow them to enjoy tv shows and these people couldn't bear with them for one episode. I actually often use captions to help with audio processing, but I actually found that if I paid a little closer attention, I didn't need them to understand the actress in question. Imagine being the kind of person who loudly complains about being inconvenienced by SOMEONE ELSE'S DISABILITY instead of putting forth a slightly additional amount of effort to understand her. It's incredibly disappointing to see fans of such a cute, typically lighthearted show being so ableist.

A Shakespearean twist
grandamjim3 November 2020
In a twist that Shakespeare would appreciate the 21st century story of the Capulets and the Montagues and the story of Romeo and Romeo, only this time is a happy ending.

I'm really sorry
spikeluvr11 April 2022
I'm really sorry but I couldn't get through the entire episode. Closed captioning is too distracting and I couldn't for the life of me understand the ghost hunter's speech. It wouldn't have been so bad if she'd only had a few lines but she dominated some scenes and I couldn't understand what was going on. My sister in law has the same condition. We all struggle to understand her but do so gladly. A television show is not that important to me. I'm all for inclusion but not to the point of making the show unwatchable.

O Thou Invisible Spirit of Wine
Prismark104 April 2020
It is time for Romeo & Juliet done the Frank and Luella way.

The Montagues have run a pub for years, leased from the Capulets. Another renewal is due soon but the Capulets are determined not to renew it this time.

Frank and Luella have been hired to locate the stolen photograph of the Montagues ancestor 'Old Lil' who might be haunting the pub.

A ghost hunter has been brought in to get to the bottom of this but someone ends up dead.

There is time for illicit love between the families as well. As a modern take it is not bad but this one wants to avoid tragedy.

This is a story you need to concentrate a bit more because one of the actor's has cerebral palsy.
