On Cape Breton Island, half brothers Link and Travis live in a trailer with their abusive father Arvin, who includes his sons in his criminal activities despite especially Travis' tender age. That abuse for Link hits a final straw when he discovers that Arvin had lied to him about his Mi'kmaq mother Sarah, who is still alive and not dead as Arvin had said. At least initially able to escape from Arvin's clutches, Link, with Travis in tow, goes on a search for his mother, with only an address as a starting point, Arvin who may not give up his own search for his sons just to show them a lesson. Despite not knowing the reasons why Sarah left and why she left him behind, Link figures she is still a tie to a side of family about which he knows nothing. Along the way, Link and Travis meet Pasmay, also Mi'kmaq like Sarah, a pow-wow dancer. While providing his own help, Pasmay unintentionally is able to provide more assistance in connecting to other Mi'kmaq. It is an emotional push and pull between Link and Pasmay as the latter knows who his family is, they who disowned him in coming out. Regardless, Pasmay is able to connect Link to the compassionate side of himself and not the angry side that is on the surface.
