Combining grassy expanses, wind turbines, and an electric fence, Juliet Bergh's low budget Kiwi drama not only looks stunning, but also uses two amazing talents: Loren Taylor (nee Horsley) from Eagle vs Shark, and Gareth Reeves from A Song of Good. I've seen extended footage, and while I'm not going to give much away besides the synopsis and teaser below, let's just say I'm very excited for this seemingly minimalistic film. Existence has it's world premier at the New Zealand Film Festival on Friday, August 3rd (tickets). [Continued ...]...

In reality World War II yielded enough real life horrors to last a lifetime, but those bastard Nazi's were so demonically evil that filmmakers just can't leave them alone. Prepare for more Third Reich themed terror in The Devil's Rock.

Looking over the team's top-five of 2009 lists today it struck me what a diverse year for genre cinema it was. Oh sure, there are certain titles that managed to make it onto almost everyone's lists (Moon and Antichrist being two clear winners), but, put together, the titles run the gamut of film styles - like the best film festival program you could image.
I certainly didn't think I'd see films like The Hangover bumping up against The Road, or a double bill of Ursula Meiers' French oddity, Home, and Stingray Sam, but it's all just too cool of a mash-up to ignore and I may have to program a little private festival of some of these titles for viewing over the holidays.
But anyway, sit back, grab a drink, peruse the lists and refresh your memory of all the films you should be netflixing, buying or borrowing in the new year.

Empathy for drug addicts is something not all of us have. Creatures of their own making, some would make excuses blaming it on their upbringing while others would rightly point out we are all responsible for our own actions. Hiding in a crack pipe from the worlds ill's is no excuse, and that's exactly what A Song of Good tackles: drug addiction from the point of view of one Kiwi lad. While I watched our protagonist Gary's position with empathy, pathetic as he was, my friends did not. Whether this was intended to cause a schism between the viewers I don't know, but we all agreed this was an accurate portrayal of addiction and the title is almost as beautiful as the song Gary's soul sung.
