Too much filler for the little substance of a generic story
Top_Dawg_Critic4 April 2021
A typical low budget B-grade film that didn't offer up anything new. Producer and director Christian Sesma's directing was decent in some parts, horrible in others - Rourke's hair blowing like Fabio's in slow-mo, especially towards the end which had the lamest and most amateur trade-off/stand-off I've ever seen, it was laughable.

This is the first ever writing credit for Zach Zerries, and it shows. It was riddled with plot holes, predictable, and omg some of the dialogue was horrid. There's a part near the end that Rourke repeated his line; why? I'm shocked that none of the producers including Rourke didn't give the screenplay a once-over to make some much needed edits. The normally comfortable 89 min runtime felt dragged out, and the slow pacing didn't help. There was too much nonsense filler, and the premise of the story needed more substance, and had someone added that to the script, this film could've been way better.

Even the overall sound was bad, like everyone forgot to bring the boom mics up close, instead of hanging high up in the air. The cinematography was good, and the performances were actually not bad, considering Sesma clearly failed in directing his cast properly. Luckily he had some seasoned actors who pulled through, and the White's performances were the stand out for me. Even my boy Rourke seemed bored for most part of the film. Oh, and what was the meaning and purpose of his bandages lol? Sloppy writing, and lots of it. But considering it's from an amateur writer, the blame falls mainly on the experienced director being even sloppier and lazy at his job. A little effort could've gone a long way in this one. But as is, it's only a 5/10 from me.

Elephant Man
hosenoggin28 July 2021
In seeing Mickey Rourke here in this movie, I realized that he could very easily star in a reenactment of the "Elephant Man." The production would be a lot less expensive due to the fact that Mickey would not need any special make up effects.

Chads will do it everytime

Warning: Spoilers
Daughter (Priscilla Walker) taken by sex traffickers. Mom (Gillian White ) and dad (Michael Jai White) who both know martial arts have to get her back. The "twist" is mom was once a prisoner of the same guy.

Mickey Rourke reminded me of Ozzy without the accent. Girls were kept in a shed, not the idea spot for sex traffickers. They have very loose tie-wraps on their wrists. Nothing looked realistic. Action scenes lacked a Liam Neeson hurt aspect.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

An hour 30 minutes of your life you'll never get back
collinsmucheni10 April 2021
I like Michael J. & his material arts loaded movies - this one is not! It's littered with scenes that add no value to the overall storyline! It's actually sad that experienced film makers can do this- maybe covid affected them!

You have a lead who seemingly has amnesia, then is suddenly faking it, clueless cops, an impotent Michael J. Who's decisions & thought process don't make sense.

The story is just so everywhere, it's like they're showing a movie as the backstory at the same time while suffering from memory loss!

I hated that I wasted time watching this, even if I was high-it wouldn't have made sense or be exciting.

I don't want to dismiss or put anyone's effort down, but honestly, they could and should have done better!!

Generic snooze fest
kesimaso30 March 2021
It's like nobody even cared about this movie. They have top named actors playing second fiddle to nobodies who can't act to save their lives and they were so lazy on the cover of the movie they litterally just cut the image of MJW's movie Falcon Rising and copy pasted it to this one.

Totally rubbish

Unfortunately unable to give zero stars. To think someone got paid to make it is amazing. You'd be better off watching it with the TV switched off.

Poorly crafted film is absolutely terrible.
Strider-10013 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is terrible for these main reasons.

1. The heroine at the end shoots an unarmed man. The showdown between the heroine (Gillian White) and the villain (Mickey Rourke) was completely lame while a policeman and her husband watch it like they are at the theater sharing a bag of popcorn. She shoots the villain who does not have a weapon. Very anti-climatic!

It also make the heroine a murderer.

2. The husband abandons his daughter during an active shoot out so he can go watch along with the police detective, his wife shooting an unarmed man. Talk about irresponsible and bad parenting and reckless endangerment of a child.

3. The villainess played by (Jessica Uberuaga) is in love with Mickey Rourke because he treats her like crap, uses her as a sex slave, had her chained up at one point of the movie, and will kill her if he gets bored with her. I guess people in love will do anything. I don't think anyone would understand the motivation of this female character. It makes zero sense.

4. They make an effort to show how dedicated the police officer is in the film and how he cares only to have the Michael Jai White character say the police don't give a $#%^.

5. At the end they don't call the police until the shootout starts even though they could have done it when they were going to have the hostage swap. Instead they rely on the sharpshooting skills of some redneck with rifle and scope that couldn't hit a bull in the backside with a hand full of cantaloupes. Insane!

Was there a positive. I felt the lead Gillian White did okay and had some good action scenes at the start of the movie. The camera man had some excellent and scenic wide shots in the film.

Pathetic
traceytak1 July 2021
Terrible acting for a start, unnecessary graphic shots of women obviously directed by a pervert, all the characters have no substance. Every scene with Mickey Rourke I found myself looking at his dreadful face surgery and not even paying attention to what was going on as it is that distracting. He plays a sex trafficking head honcho yet he can't afford a flat screen tv ???? The main character is displayed as a level headed woman yet she has a samurai sword on display in her house on a stand ??? It's a stupid film with stupid characters. A 15 rating just shows that the censors are not doing their job.

Haters in abundance
nealkattman6 August 2021
Id love to see how some of these critics blasting this movie can do better. You guys are just born bitter asses with nothing to do but gripe about other peoples work.

At the outset I was thinking it would be just another WOKEFEST making everything caucasion evil. But i was pleasently surprised by how it played out. Perhaps a tad unrealistic in its stereotyping but wth... I really enjoyed the movie.

Almost maybe perhaps an OK film ...
A_Different_Drummer30 March 2021
Rourke is the Bob Joyce of bad guys -- even pushing 70, he still gets the job done. Dennis Miller once said of Rourke, in a typically flamboyant role, "I wonder if Mickey even knows he is in a movie." Michael Jai White never quite got the career he deserved, and lately seems happy to underplay everything. His wife Gillian steals what is left of the film after Director Sesma misses countless opportunities to improve the pacing and audience interest. He somehow manages to make even sex traffiking seem boring. Could have been a contender.

Next please
Leofwine_draca17 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was an awful attempt at a thriller that singularly wastes the talents of Michael Jai White, one of the toughest fighters working in B-movie cinema today. He plays a guy whose daughter is kidnapped by people smugglers, led by Mickey Rourke, looking unrecognisable in an extended cameo. The plot is muddled, the budget non-existent, the fight scenes disappointing; next, please!

HORRIBLE MOVIE! DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME!
legalizecures17 June 2021
Stupid lines! Bad acting! Bad directing! Bad everything! How do movies this bad get released?? Punisher is the only good movie I've ever seen Micheal Jai White in. I don't remember it being this bad anyway. The creators of this movie must be going for one of those bad movie awards just to say they have some kind of award. Golden Raspberry Award.

too generic...
xerses-9095530 March 2021
As a previous reviewer commented base story ok,but overall acting is something you dont find in this "movie". Especially Mickey Rourke is so displaced,he looks really like someone who don care that he should act. Very disappointing. MJ White and Wife are not that bad,but still cant get my head around why they took M. Rourke.....

Martial Arts Action Dud
stevendbeard20 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "Take Back", starring Mickey Rourke-The Masked Singer_tv, The Expendables; Michael Jai White-Arrow_tv, Black Dynamite_tv; Gillian White-The Young and the Restless_tv, Jackie Brown and James Russo-Django Unchained, Open Range.

This is a low budget martial arts action dud. I usually like martial arts movies but this one has bad acting and plot holes that you could drive a truck through. Mickey plays the villain and he is one of the worst things about this movie. His 'acting' is mostly just sitting around petting his dogs and trying to look villainous. Michael is a martial arts teacher that teaches his wife Gillian how to be a bad ass-she can even beat him up. Just in time, too, when she needs those skills to stop a bullying boyfriend from terrorizing a woman in a store. Gillian gets on tv and gets recognized by Mickey-they have a secret past connection-who sends guys to kill her. Gillian keeps maiming or killing the would be assassins which draws the attention of James, the detective investigating the cases. Sometimes, Mickey wants to kill Gillian and other times he doesn't-I said there were plot problems. There are even times when he could do things he earlier said he would do, and then he will just feed his dogs or just look off, menacingly.

It didn't have a rating but it had violence, language and sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 29 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD or rent, either. If you really want to see it, I would wait until it's on cable tv.

Get back
kosmasp24 October 2022
No pun intended - there is no way back! There is no time given back especially. Now I have seen worse movies (Daniel der Zauberer to name the most recent one), but having said that, I really didn't need to watch this one too. On the other hand I am a fan of Michel Jai White ... and even if I wouldn't say it is his best movie (I reckon you can consider this a pun), it is always nice to see him act in something ... well you know what I mean.

Not sure if it qualifies to be called a B-movie action film - but you do have to have a heart for low budget movies. And if you also like one or more of the actors ... well it certainly will help with enjoying this. Decent enough if you suspend your disbelief I reckon ...

Another deranged Rourke appearance
Chris_Mac_2515 January 2022
Opening scene is Mickey Rourke, clearly ad libbing and shouting at his dogs. He looks completely deranged and unaware that he's actually being filmed and taking part in a cinematic endeavour. Rourke only accepts parts in movies where he has complete autonomy over his appearance and script, so that he can turn up, behave like a maniac and get paid.

Michael Jai White deserves so much better

His wife tries hard but can't compensate for low budget woes

Chris Browning and Paul Sloane are wasted.

Ok I love MJW and his wife BUT!!!!
ejgigli22 August 2021
As much as I love this couple and most of his movies.... this is just horrible. It could have had so much potential with how big of a problem sex trafficking is. Oh well.. better luck next time.

sauerkraut-9646730 March 2021
That is about the only thing that is even OK about this movie. The acting is horrendous and script is even worse. Mikey Rourke should just go away. His acting is SOOOOO bad. Only watch this if is one of the only things available.

Another worst action film! Full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Not recommended!
kwenchow6 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with two women drinking at the bar, and they been kidnapped scene! As turnout, this film is about a couple(Brian, and Zara) need to team up to save their daughter "Audrey" from the kidnap of a crime boss "Patrick"! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the lying on the floor scene, overuse of the blackout scene, overuse of the flashbacks scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the news broadcasting scene, overuse of the watching TV scene, overuse of the checking phone scene, overuse of the drinking scene, and overuse of the eating scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the action scene have blood, and things broken at certain point, but overall portray by sideways, and occur in too short of time! Make the film frustrated to watch! At the end, Zara killed Patrick, and save Audrey! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

VIEWS ON FILM review of Take Back
burlesonjesse524 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Don't you remember me?" Ah when someone says that, it's never really a welcoming sign.

Anyway 2021's Take Back is my latest write-up. By definition, the words take back refer to reclaiming possession of something. In the film Take Back, a married couple is trying to reclaim possession of their daughter who is being kidnapped by sex traffickers. Take Back is a shade watchable but it doesn't equal the intensity of the similar Traffik from three years ago. That flick involving the forced labor of women was pretty darn upsetting.

Movie comparisons aside, Take Back is an action/thriller that has a little bit of both. It's a somewhat dangerous pic in which no one really feels safe throughout. There's plenty of hand-to-hand combat, a few remorseless killings, a couple of shootouts, and one proposed ego trip by Mr. Russell Jones (he acts as co-producer, extra, production designer, and art director).

Yeah Take Back moves at decent clip and yeah, the acting is sort of amicable. But as Roger Murtaugh once said in an 80s action relic, the overall outline here is uh, "pretty thin".

Take Back has a lot of brooding characters (with Mickey Rourke acting like well, Mickey Rourke) and everyone pretty much appears mean-spirited and nasty. But the filmmakers obviously didn't do enough research with the concept of captivity in cinema. The script by rookie Zach Zerries is pretty vague as it presents some holes in the so-called trafficking mythos. I mean not that I condone torment but those scenes are so quickly cut you don't know exactly what's going on.

Bottom line: I don't want a "take back" so I'm going with a mixed review. Check out 2018's Traffik (mentioned earlier) if you haven't already. It just goes deeper down the rabbit hole of coercing and abduction. Furthermore, it does so without the inching folly.

Just pretty bland
ThatDarnIrishMan0124 June 2022
I had just watched Welcome to Sudden Death last night which was pretty campy fun. I saw Michael Jai White was in this too so thought I'd give it a shot.

This movie tries to be very serious. Michael is a huge muscular dude and for some reason they put him in some nerdy glasses and baggy clothing to hide his muscles so he can play a nerdy high school teacher. His wife instead play the action lead and she's totally fine. She's a capable action lead.

The storyline is trying to be quite dark and serious. A woman running from her past accidentally draws attention to herself from stopping a domestic violence incident. The movie repeatedly hammers in interviews about domestic violence stats against women which is played a half dozen times throughout the movie but the storyline isn't about domestic violence at all. It's about sex trafficking.

It's just a pretty slow paced movie that just randomly ends with a very awkward shoot out that only has about 4 people involved because this is a COVID movie. It ends with the main villain just kind of turning and walking away into the desert for no reason apart from letting the confrontation happen out in the middle of nowhere where everyone stands at least 50 feet apart at all times quietly whispering to eachother but they all can hear eachother perfectly.

Slow paced, boring and pretty awkward. Poor production values and really bad editing. You have dead bodies blinking at times. There's a transition to a dude that obviously cut too early to him so he's a freez frame for about 5 frames before suddenly moving. You see the boom mic a few times in different scenes.
