• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [after the battle of Sekigahara]  See that he does it, make sure he acts like a true Samurai, like his brother did.

  Naomasa : [Walks toward Hidetada and then walks back]  You don't have to do this. After what happened now makes you the most powerful man in Japan. No one is making you do this.

  Hidetada : [Seeing Ieyasu walk toward him]  I'm sorry, father. I know my duty.

  [Pulls out a Tanto and puts it against his neck] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : 20 years ago, I had to prove my loyalty, and I lost a son. Now, my loyatly is to my family.

  [Takes the Tanto away from Hidetada's neck and sheathes the Tanto] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : and I'll be damned if I lose another.

  [Walks off] 

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [after Mitsunari escpaed]  You know if you had decent make-up Mitsunari, and do something with your hair. They're always looking for a Geisha in Osaka.

  Mitsunari : I'm flattered.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : What a coinicidence, some assassins dropped in on me a few nights back. Now somebody's chasing after you.

  Mitsunari : We live in dangerous times.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : We certainly live in strange ones, yes?

  Mitsunari : Dont' play games with me Ieyasu, call off your son.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Now why would I do that?

  Mitsunari : All of my life I have served the Taiko's family, before and *after* his death.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : You're scared. You want my help.

  Mitsunari : What is it that you want?

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : I want you to return to your castle in Sawayama, stay there,Get that make-up, find a nice man.

  Mitsunari : You are not the Taiko. To order me...

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [Interrupting]  No, I'm not the Taiko, and I'm not ordering you. It's your choice Mitsunari, exile. Or I'll reveal, you tried to murder me.

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [Handing Naomasa a message]  This is from Hideyaki.

  [after Naomasa reads the message] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : He says he is no longer fooled by Mitsunari.

  Naomasa : And you believe him?

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Why lie?

  Naomasa : Because *that's* what he does. Mototada died because of him.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [Becoming angry]  Are you questioning me? ARE YOU? We will find out the truth, soon enough, at Sekigahara!

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : So, I finally get my own bed back.

  Hidetada : [Coming in and being pinned down by Mototada]  It's me.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : We can see.

  Hidetada : Who was that?

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Mitsunari's men.

  Hidetada : Mitsunari? I'll kill him.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : You'll do nothing, understand? Leave Mitsunari to me. You will do nothing.

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : See that he does it, make sure he acts like a true samurai, like his brother did.

  Naomasa : [Walking towards Hidetada, and then back inside with Tokugawa]  You don't have to do this, your victory will make you the most powerful man in Japan. No one is making you do this.

  [Tokuogawa walks towards Hidetada] 

  Hidetada : I'm sorry, father. I know my duty.

  [Takes a dagger out of its holster and puts it against his neck] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : 20 years ago, I had to prove my loyalty, and I lost a son. Now, my loyalty is to my family.

  [Takes the dagger from Hidetada and puts it back in the holster] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : And I'll be damned if I lose another.

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [Hands Naomasa a latter]  This is from Hideyaki.

  [Naomasa takes the letter and reads it] 

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : He said that he has changed sides, he says that he is no longer fooled by Mitsunari.

  Naomasa : And you believe him?

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Why lie?

  Naomasa : Because that is what he does. Mototada died because of him.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Are you questioning me, ARE YOU? We will find out the truth soon enough, at Sekigahara.

• Hidetada : I want to be a part of this fight. I'm not a boy.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : We may not need to fight. If we move quickly. Hidetada, you were a gift on the day Nobuyasu died.

  Hidetada : So, I live my life wrapped in silk because of Nobuyasu?

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : I had to protect you.

  Hidetada : I don't need protecting. What I need is a chance to prove myself.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : Until you learn to think before you act, you can do exactly as I say, and I say we use politics, not war.

• Hideaki Kobayakawa : [while bird hunting with Tokugawa]  You ride like a madman.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : I need to keep up with you.

  Hideaki Kobayakawa : If you come to sk for my help, I can't give it.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : You know, Hideyaki if your uncle was alive, he would deal with the rebels as much as I will. Hideyaki, 5 years ago you returned from battle and Mitsunari suggested to your uncle that you pull a sword straight across your guts, he said you were a disgrace and you deserve death.

  Hideaki Kobayakawa : I've failed, I've led my troops to defeat.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : You were a boy, sent to do a man's job.

  Hideaki Kobayakawa : I know. You're the one that spoke up for me.

  Tokugawa - Ieyasu : It wasn't hard to do. I didn't want to see another young life wasted. I know this isn't going to be easy for you, but someone has to hold Japan together, like it or not that's you and me.

  Hideaki Kobayakawa : What do you want me to do?

• Tokugawa - Ieyasu : [Ordering his troops to fire on Hideyaki at Sekigahara]  He has to choose which side he's on. Someone must make him choose.
