- "Heroes" - "Chapter Nine: It's Coming" - Nov. 17, 2008
Mohinder starts telling us about strange things that happen during an eclipse as we see the one from the first season from the character's eyes.
We're back to Hiro screaming as Papa P is holding his head in the African desert. Ando goes to jump on Papa P, Papa P stops him midair and flings him to the ground. He chides Hiro for not getting the job done. Papa P is then distracted by a rock painting of an eclipse.
Ando awakens Hiro by jumping onto him. Hiro awakens cheerfully, happy to see Ando and wanting waffles. Papa P closes in as Ando begs Hiro to teleport them away. He squeezes Hiro's eyes shut and they awaken in a bowling alley in Tokyo, where they make Hiro's favorite waffles. He wonders why he and Ando are so old. He thinks he's 10 for some reason.
At Pinehearst Sylar watches workers fix the Peter-size hole in the window and broods. Papa P materializes beside him and says it's odd that Peter survived that fall without powers. Papa P says he has to show Sylar something. They walk and talk. Papa P says that Sylar's hunger isn't about killing it's about empathy and he can teach him how to use it. Sylar wonders how Papa P knows he can learn empathy. Because he knows that Sylar is the one who saved Peter from the fall. He escorts Sylar into a very dark, very large cell. Inside Elle is piping mad. When she sees Sylar she says "you!" and zaps him with all she's got.
Peter is dressing and Claire arrives saying they have to get out of there. Peter says he's going to hide and Claire should go home. She says he needs her protection since he's "power"-less. He says he can protect himself. He says it's not her fight and he needs her to stay innocent. There is banging on the door, she tells Peter to run and she will hold whoever it is off. It's Knox and Flint. Flint powers up his fire hands and Knox tries to suck in her fear. But she says "don't you know? I'm the defensive player of the year" and launches herself out the window falling several stories past Peter on the fire escape. He hustles down the same steps twice, she re-sets her bones and they're off down an alley with a mural of the world going "Ka-BOOM!" before diving down a sewer.
Mohinder is in the lab and Papa P wants to know if he's had any luck. They look at a test subject who has had a less than successful introduction of powers. Papa P notices photos of eclipses on Mohinder's computer. Mohinder notes the last power surge was during the last eclipse but writes it off as coincidence. He then talks about how his formula- merged with Papa P's formula- is sound but it's still not working because it's missing something. Papa P tells him to keep looking. Mohinder says they need to find their catalyst in a human host. Papa P thinks Kaito Nakamura hid the person they need, just not well enough. We get a full on glimpse of the grody test subject who writhes in pain, covered in scales and other gross stuff, hands looking like distorted and extended.
Elle is screaming at Sylar about killing her dad and how she could kill him for that. He says he won't insult her by apologizing and that she deserves vengeance and that he'll take whatever she's got. She lights him up.
At PrimaTech Daphne and Parkman find it empty. And then Parkman sees the (unbeknownst to anyone not Arthur, Hiro, or Ando) recently deceased Usutu, who points them to Angela's hospital room. Parkman tries to read her mind and gets a major brain download. He says he has to help her. Daphne speeds off to get a nurse. (In a place they already know is empty, mind you.)
She really speeds off to see Papa P, who is looking at Kaito and Claire's folders. She tells him Parkman is trying to help Mama P. She wonders if he put her in that bed. She asks to leave Parkman out of it. He says if she's unhappy he can arrange for her to go back to her previous life. She demurs. He tells her to stay with Parkman and if he tries to help Mama P, he will be there.
Claire and Peter are walking through the bowels of the sewer and he says they should separate. She doesn't like this plan. He says she still has a chance. She says she left home to fight these people and she wants to protect him. He reveals that the alley they just ran through is the one in which she shoots him in the future because she's becoming a killer and he wants to make sure that future doesn't come true and he doesn't know if he can do it because she's still becoming the woman of the future, the killer. He tells her to go home. She says no and it's all his fault and that he should never have saved her originally and become her hero because now she has a favor to return. Knox and Flint are closing in and she tells him to run as she confronts them. They tell her she can't fight it. She wonders how they know her name. They say because they came for her, not Peter. They grab her, she screams and Peter stops as he hears this.
In the bowling alley/chicken&waffle house. Hiro is playing with his food. Ando tells him to stop fooling around since the fate of the world rests in his hands and that he's a 28-year-old superhero. Hiro wonders what kind. Ando tells him that he can bend the space/time continuum and shows him the squint. Hiro says it looks stupid and then tries it slowing down a spitball being sent by a little girl behind them. He tries again and it works, everything is frozen. He jumps up and yells "I did it" and then turns the spitballers around and plays with stuff in the bowling alley, pouring ketchup on chairs, tying people's shoes, etc. Ando is happy but says they have a lot of work to do.
Daphne returns and says she couldn't find anyone (duh! the place is EMPTY!). Parkman says he has to get inside Mama P's head. Daphne wonders if it's safe. He's not sure, he's only done it once, with his dad, and it didn't end well. Daphne asks how she can help. He says just to keep an eye on him. He settles in to mind meld.
Elle is still unleashing on Sylar. Sylar says he didn't want to kill her dad or any of the people he killed. He says she knows he didn't want to and she saved his life by showing him that. He says the urge isn't going to control him anymore. She unleashes some more screaming she swears to God she will kill him. He says he understands she needs to let it out. She zaps him again. He takes it. A lot of it. They both collapse. She tells him to kill her, begs even. He advances toward her with his evil head slicing finger.
Nathan and Tracy arrive at Pinehearst. She wonders if Nathan wants to do this. He says he needs to know the truth. He says everything he's ever done has been because his father- law school, his wife, running for public office- couldn't. Tracy and Nathan confront Papa P who wants to give Nathan a hug. Nathan declines. Tracy shakes his hand. Nathan gives Papa P a hard time about what he's put the family through. Papa P says hindsight being 20/20 he recognizes he should've told Nathan sooner about his role in all of this. Papa P sends Tracy away and tells Nathan that the events of last few weeks- the assassination attempt, Linderman, the senate seat- have pointed to what his destiny is. Papa P says Nathan was born with a talent to lead the nation and goes to touch his shoulder. Nathan says it's the same crap Linderman spouted and the last time New York was almost destroyed, now it's the whole world. Papa P says he has the formula to make sure that won't happen. Nathan says he's insane. Papa P says that Nathan has always been his favorite, the one most like him. He says they can save the world together, it can be their legacy. He puts his hand on his shoulder again. Nathan stares at him.
Sylar uses his evil finger to undo Elle's cuffs. She asks him to kill her, take her power, and make the pain stop. Sylar, who is now shirtless, says he wants to make the pain stop but he won't kill her because he wants to be a good person. She says he's a monster just like her. He disagrees, saying their parents made them this way. He says they were never good enough for their parents. He says he knows she wants to be normal but didn't know how and that since she saved his life she must realize he owes her. She said she only saved him so they could use him like a lab rat. He says she was just following orders but he forgives her. He touches her arm and says now she needs to forgive herself. She does- awfully quickly- and the pain goes away. He starts, and suddenly he has her power as electricity bubbles around in his hands. He showed her empathy and got the power without cutting her head open. He cries and then laughs.
Knox and Flint are dragging Claire away and Peter confronts them saying to let her go or die. Knox wonders how Peter will manage that. Turns out he has busted open a gas pipe so when dumbass Flint throws his fire it backdrafts a ball of flame on them, which Claire ducks and she and Peter run off.
Sylar and Elle sit side by side and she thanks him for his kindness. He says she forgave herself and that we're all at war with ourselves, it's what makes us human. She sighs and lights up her hand and he does the same, he's not quite as good as her yet. She gets up to show him a few tricks. She shows him how to aim and fire. He follows her lead. She grabs his arm and huddles in close and tells him to loosen up and put some English on it. He does and thanks her. She thanks him. They look like they're about to kiss and we pull back to see Papa P watching them on closed-circuit.
At the bowling alley Hiro is ready to teleport. Ando tells him that normally he closes his eyes and thinks of a location. Hiro does it and bounds around Ando. Ando explains how he can take him with him. HIro transports them to "Sam's Comics", a Japanese comic book store (or, at least, one that carries a LOT of Japanese print comics), "the source of all knowledge."
On the way out of Pinehearst, Nathan explains to Tracy that Papa P wants to give half the world superpowers so they can save the planet together with Nathan as president. He's not sure if he believes him or what he believes anymore or what to do with his life now that his father is alive. Tracy tells him to chill, he's a senator (what, really? despite barely spending ONE DAY in office?) and he needs to have a clear vision for his constituency. He tries to walk away saying "good luck with that," but she tells him he needs to get himself together. She says they should involve the justice department. He points out the last time he tried to tell people, his brother came back from the future and shot him, twice. They need to keep a lid on it. He says he's going to PrimaTech to check in with his mom. He tells her to go back to Washington and cover for him and he'll be in touch with the next move. He flies away.
Tracy comes in to see Papa P. He thinks she wants him to take away her power. She says she's getting used to it but thinks she can help him. She says he has a PR problem: he needs a public face for his plan but he's supposed to be dead. She says she can convince Nathan to be that face if Papa P makes sure to scratch her back when the dust settles. Papa P is intrigued.
Parkman is mind melding with Angela seeing all her visions. Daphne calls to him but he can't hear her. He goes into a dream state where he sees Angela cuffed to a chair in a hallway. She says he shouldn't have come, Papa P is too dangerous. He tries to unlock her cuffs. She says Arthur has locked all the doors. He finds an open door. Daphne walks through (casting two shadows), hugs him, and stabs him. He starts yelling "Daphne, don't" and the real Daphne in the hospital room goes to shake him awake and touches his shirt and her hand comes away bloody. She keeps trying to shake him awake. She asks him to bring her in. She wakes up in his dream state and he tells her to get away from him. He doesn't trust her. She says he can. Then the Daphne with the bloody knife says not to believe her. Knife Daphne turns into Papa P and tells Matt that he knew where he was because Daphne told him. She betrayed him like Angela betrayed Papa P. Parkman is mad. Daphne explains that she was afraid, she couldn't back to her old life but couldn't let him die either. She says she didn't realize how much she cared about him. She says he has to wake up or he will die. Papa P says Parkman can't trust her since all women lie and to send her away. Daphne says she made a mistake and that she doesn't want to lose him, she loves him. He touches her head.
The scene changes, Parkman and Daphne are by a window in Angela's office. Angela sits in a chair and says to Papa P that they were once in love and that part of him still loves her. She says now he's going to let her go. She says, "let me go Arthur." He does, and the cuffs fall off. Parkman grabs her and they run. Parkman wakes with a shake and stands up. He checks his gut and he's not bleeding (even the formerly bloody shirt is even clean!). He turns to Daphne who says she meant what she said about loving him. They hug. Angela awakes and says she's okay. Parkman goes to look for a doctor (IN THE EMPTY HOSPITAL!) and they run into Peter and Claire. Doctor, ex-hospice nurse, eh, close enough.
Peter yells Daphne can't be trusted. Parkman grabs Peter and says he's the one who can't be trusted. (Remember Future Peter sent him to the desert? after shooting his brother on live TV?) He reads Peter's mind and he promises that it wasn't him, mind-style. Claire asks after Angela. Parkman reports she's awake.
Mohinder is talking over the nasty test subject into a dictaphone. He leans over and apologizes. The test subject asks him to kill him. Mohinder fills a syringe with something and injects the test subject.
At the comic book store Hiro is looking at comics and wondering how something he sees in them could've happened: Captain America is dead, Spider-Man revealed his secret identity, and the Hulk is Red?! Hiro is not happy and Ando is trying to reason with him. Hiro then spies the (Japanese print) "9th Wonder" comic with himself on the cover. (It looks like the "him" on the cover is a little boy. btw, was Isaac that powerful or did he write this before "Hiro in the Future", which would have followed his final issue, where Sylar dies?) Ando is excited knowing this is the book that tells the future and starts paging through it. He shows Hiro the pages with Papa P grabbing his head. Hiro doesn't remember that. Ando flips ahead to the panels showing the conversation they're currently having in the comic book store, holding the comic. Hiro thinks it's a trick. There's no little girl with a red bow, nearby, it must be a trick! They page ahead and see a photo of the eclipse with the lines "it's coming" at the bottom. (It's weird, earlier dialogue in the book was in Japanese, but "it's coming" is in English). They agree they don't know what it means but it looks bad.
Peter goes in to Angela who tells him that Papa P is alive. Peter says he knows and Nathan arrives and says he knows too. (So now Daphne, Parkman, Peter, Claire, and Nathan are around her bed). She says Papa P has has stolen two pieces of the formula and that she and Peter have seen the future and nobody wants that. Parkman chimes in that he's seen it now too and agrees. Angela says that Papa P has probably realized there's a third part to the formula, a catalyst hidden in a human host who was only known to Kaito, who is dead. We get a shot of Claire. Nathan asks how they find the host. Parkman says they don't have to, they just have make sure Papa P doesn't. Peter looks at Nathan. Nathan looks at Angela. Claire says when Sylar attacked her he saw something, said she was different from everyone else, special. She says she didn't understand until today. She says "I think I'm the catalyst."
We now get quick cuts: Tracy walking into Papa P's office, Nathan in the hospital room, Knox following Tracy, Parkman looking grave. Then a cut to the eclipse as Mohinder says that it starts and ends with light and in between there is darkness. Again quick cuts: Daphne looking nervous, Flint following Knox, Peter looking grave, Sylar and Elle following Flint. (So we now have the heroes and villains assembled, except don't you think Sylar and Elle would be heroes now?) The villains stand around Papa P who's got the white eyes of future painting and is scribbling his own eclipse drawing on a note pad. "It's Coming."
