A story of a couple who grew apart without even knowing it. One is content with their relationship while the other has contrasting feelings.

Greetings again from the darkness. They've been together for 10 years, and when Doug proposes - seemingly spontaneously - to Lori, her reaction is 'slightly' askew from what he expected. The real question here is, how do two people have a 10 year romantic relationship and never once discuss marriage, kids, a house, or literally anything to do with their future? That's the premise for the dramedy from writer director Jeff Rosenberg and co-writer Laura Jacqmin.

Aya Cash ("Fosse/Verdon" and a Jodie Whitaker lookalike) stars as Lori, longtime girlfriend of Doug, played by William Jackson Harper (MIDSOMMAR, 2019). If the proposal-gone-wrong and subsequent fallout weren't uncomfortable enough, the timing couldn't be much worse. Lori and Doug are scheduled to leave for her sister's wedding, and both have roles in the wedding party ... he's "King of the Ushers". Since staying away is not an option, the dilemma they face is whether to announce the break-up or pretend everything is fine until the vows are exchanged. They decide not to spoil the wedding and head off to Camp Arrowhead, the former summer camp site that the wedding couple selected for the ceremony.

Sarah Bolger (IN AMERICA, 2002) plays Bea, Lori's betrothed sister. She's been dating Jayson (Tony Cavalero, "School of Rock" TV series) for a whole month, and the two energetic free-spirits are total personality opposites from Lori and Doug. As mother of the two girls, Peri Gilpin ("Frasier") is a tad less than supportive of her daughter's spontaneous life decisions, while initially clueless to the difficulties faced by her stable and dependable daughter.

The film is well acted by the leads, but most of it feels like a missed opportunity to explore the psychological differences of the sisters or the effects of a long-term "comfortable" relationship with no eye towards the future. Both of the topics are begging for more in-depth coverage, and instead we are left with mostly predictable behavior. One couple that is too fast to the altar, while the other is too slow, presents a goldmine of opportunity. On the bright side, there are some small moments and subtle jokes and gags that are beautifully executed and work much better than the overall comedy efforts. Filmed at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, the film touches on anger and hurt and excitement, and all emotions attached to love and relationships.

In theaters and On Demand April 23, 2021.

Honestly I don't know how I'd rate this
ajsoccer-443826 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There was no real romance or comedy in this "romantic comedy" and it was just kind of sad. The characters should have spent more time communicating and figuring out what they wanted instead of pretending everything was fine. Kind of an odd stereotype movie but it wasn't humorous or interesting. Disappointing.

Depressing
pcb196528 August 2021
This was in the comedy section. Not only was it depressing, it never really went anywhere. The female lead (Lori) was totally unlikeable and I really couldn't figure out why the male lead (Doug) would stay with her anyway.

7/10. Not sure what all the bad reviews are about? People who put a 1/10 that's not a true rating😔

This movie was decent and entertaining! It was worth watching! Don't let the 1/10's fool you! My husband and I enjoyed the movie.

Meh I usually enjoy nearly everything but this is very stale!

As close to a hot mess as could possibly be! I put it on cause I watched a horror movie called Fresh before this which is amazing yet very disturbing figured this would be solid ish it only is slightly enjoyable. The bulk of it is awkward, not funny, and would almost been fine without being a movie more of a hangout for everyone involved.

Efficient, cute, funny, heartwarming love stories!
ahmed_costa15 May 2021
This film doesn't waste any air time where every unspoken moment speaks louder than words. Just like IRL! Make sure you don't miss a beat. You will feel a range of emotions from anxiety, sexual tension between the love interests, sadness, wanting, love, happiness. You feel all the feels and especially in those silent moments and musical vignettes. The characters stories take toy on a journey throughout the film that we all go through when thinking about marrying someone like mining your life with someone and seeing if you can share youre dreams with your partner and vice versa.

Warning: Spoilers
The most disappointing movie I've seen in recent months. We had some hope since we are fans of Harper, but nope, there was nothing of value here. There was no humor, no comedy, it was just all sad and very boring. You could tell it was a low budget. The storyline was a bunch of adults hanging out at a camp for a couple days before a wedding. Not one scene didn't contain massive amounts of alcohol or pot or pot brownies. We watched it to the end, hoping for something redemptive. Sad ending, too.

But Did They

Warning: Spoilers
Script does things and expects us to just deal with the way that it happens. Felt forced in that regard. I enjoyed the characters but only WJH had compelled me enough to care about his well being. Some characters have flaws that are never solved by the end of the film. Plot holes. I still enjoyed it tho! Just like how I enjoy dominos pizza occasionally.

Who wants to watch this?
RussHog26 April 2021
Man this was lame. Two people break up - or something - and hang out? Low budget - badly acted. Hope it filled some digital shelf so everyone who watches this can be just as miserable as I was.

This movie is unfairly maligned
tuvalu-405374 September 2021
This is an excellent movie, a realistic romance for a change. It's funny and touching. I think the bad ratings are because it's not your typical "everything works out in the end" kind of film. But let's face it, sometimes people want different things.

Story Was Explained In a Neat Package
eric26200315 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yes we all know that breaking up is hard to do. What's even more awkward is that it happens to occur at the wedding of a sibling and to avoid ruining this joyous occasion said former lovers now have to pretend they are still in a realtionship. The focus of this romantic comedy "We Broke Up" is about how Lori (Aya Cash) and Doug (Willian Jackson Harper) can go through this ordeal without causing any tension as her sister Bea (Sara Bolger) is about to marry her lover Jayson (Tony Cavelero). While this is happening Lori and Doug struggle to question if this break up is really what they want or is there a way they can repair the cracks in their relationship. Though they've been steady for a decade, they never raised questions about owning a house, raising a family, or paying the bills and whatnot. So when Doug finally proposes, Lori balks at the opportunity causing Doug to through in the towel ending the relationship just before Bea and Jayson's summer camp themed wedding.

Under the direction of Jeff Rosenberg, the setting for this movie is the bizarre albeit intriguing epicentre for most of the jokes in this movie, though a wedding with a summer camp theme which I give credit is quite original. Rosenberg co-wrote the movie with Laura Jacqmin delves into the summer camp venue as an excuse for the sisters who have so many memories they have togather during those warm summer days. They reflect back on the many escapades they committed there while making this summer camp setting feel more like holiday resort and less like a sleepaway dwelling you find in traditional summer camps. Sure the cabins are still there, but with nicer looking pools and the evening socials have a hotel look to them. Not only that but Bea and Jayson insist to play an old Paul Bunyan camp games which consists of drinking competitions that take Lori and Doug's head out of the gutter at least for a little while. Meanwhile their mother Adelaide (Perri Gilpin) has concerns regarding if Bea is rushing too fast in marrying Jayson as they've only met each other only a month prior to this movie.

Though both couples are polar opposites to one another, Cash and Harper share a chemistry that raises question regarding the true feeling they have for each other. In different stages in the movie, one party members sentiments seem to switch. At one point you might feel Doug is taking this conflict very personally and in other scenes it's Lori carrying the heavy burden over her shoulders. The whole "misery deserves company" comes into full effect for this emotionally-fractured couple. The title itself has signs of some optimism meaning that there might be chance that this break-up is only temporary and not permanent. Bea and Jayson might have issues of their own, but they've managed to work things out making them the happy couple who will embark on the next chapter of their lives. They bring the level of energy at a positive level contrary to the drab lives that bestow upon Lori and Doug.

Rosenberg and Harper collaborated on "The Good Place" where Rosenberg serves as an assistant director and Harper is one of the principal cast. The film raises many questions relating to the situations of our leading characters. Are we in the right for breaking up? Is it too late to fix whatever problems we had in the past? Were we ever meant for each other to begin with? Where do we go from here? And most importantly, how will we explain this situation to my family? All of these conflicts is set in a rather absurd situation. The anger and desparity could not be at a time where joy and happiness is in the air as one couple is getting married while other is breaking up.

While the situation is quite awkward and complex, Rosenberg assures his audience that the movie will be executed in an easy to follow pattern and the scenarios are tied nicely together to avoid confusion. With nicely done cinematography from Andrew Aiello and production design from Amelia Steely, the film takes great pleasure in creating the atmosphere of a summer camp themed wedding while trying to see if the leading couple can rectify their relationship or if the situation is all to bizarre for them. Relationships are not always guarenteed successful, but "We Broke Up" makes the effort into finding a solution to get these two back on track whether it succeeds or fails. Either way at least it tries.

Slooow and boring.

Warning: Spoilers
I have enjoyed the main cast in other things but this was just so slow and boring. We don't get enough of a glimpse into the main couples life to see the reason for the conflict. And we definitely aren't given a reason to root for them.

I wanted to like this...
vincentlynch-moonoi20 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
...but the main problem I had was that the setting of the film just seemed unrealistic to me. So un-adult.

A secondary problem for me was the actor who played the groom in the film -- Tony Cavalero. He looks homeless. Didn't work for me at all.

However, the two lead actors -- Aya Cash and William Jackson Harper -- were interesting, and worked as a couple...within the context of not working as a couple. Nevertheless, as at least one other reviewer indicated, why would the male lead be interested in the female lead. I was rooting for the unexpected ending.

What I felt was needed here was a different setting and a different supporting cast that didn't distract from the main story line.

Boring soap
texxas-127 April 2021
2 young people who are dating decide to break up......and act like it's the end of the word. No strings attached whatsoever, no kids, no house, no marriage but been together 10 years apparently which I find unbelievably unrealistic in 2021. Did they get into a seriously relationship at 18 or something? They never met any other people? And apparently its the end of the world and all their friends and family think so too. Okay....

It's fine but the message to take from it is important
johnvalley-7554822 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is fine, nothing good nothing bad. Wasn't particularly funny but it was something I wouldn't hate watching again. The pacing was good as it told a fine story in less than an hour and a half. The moral of the movie is what's really important. If you find yourself in a relationship with someone that is like the sisters or is like the mother, RUNNNN!!!! If you end up marrying someone like one of them, you deserve the inevitable divorce that'll be dropped on your head. These 3 women and the 3 idiots that are/will be/were in relationships with them are a snapshot of why divorce rates in this country are so high. Now some people might hate me for saying that but hear out my reasons. 1. Bea is messed up I mean the stories about her in middle school and the horse riding story shows how crazy she is and how you can't trust her, if those weren't enough then just look to the fact that she ran out of the wedding with 3 hours left yet the guy still got married to her, what is wrong with my man. 2. Lori is a woman that doesn't want to be in a committed long term relationship even though she already in a relationship with Doug for 10 YEARS. Moral of the story: talk to your woman before letting them waste 10 YEARS of your life. Yes this is Doug's fault but man Lori is leading him on and giving him mixed answers that lead him to believe the relationship might go somewhere long long term. Also, after being in a relationship for 10 years, you would think that person would be willing to commit to you. 3. The mom is a hater and seems irresponsible. I mean all the stories make her seem irresponsible and she basically hates on Bea and her mans in such an obvious way.

Record Breaking Movie!

Three minutes and twenty-two seconds... The amount of time it took before I turned this movie off.

Literally the worst 3 minutes and 22 seconds of any movie I've ever seen.

Cute unique story with solid characters. I wasn't really expecting too much but it kept my interest. It had a few funny moments and a few sappy moments.

Worst English accent attempt ever made.

I'm English and watching this film was dreadful because of the worst attempt at an English accent I have ever heard. The film is dull anyway but that accent made it irritatingly dull.

Terrific...lots of depth, honest emotions, humor
mrosec-4985423 April 2021
The chemistry between the characters was excellent and I cared what happened to the four main characters from beginning to end. Some may classify this as a comedy but deeper and more thoughtful than the usual. Lots to think about after the movie ended.

Well, odd messages here
nhoelbl111 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Other reviewers have given you the synopsis, so I'll skip it. My take away from this movie is that a long term relationship , like ten years, without an actual commitment besides a shared lease...is not a failure when it ends. Mmmm, wrong. This is what you get when famous dummies go on social media and call their divorce a "conscious uncoupling ". No, it's a failed marriage, or a failed relationship. Doesn't matter how great you want to label it, it's still a fail. And it happens to almost everyone at some point. Why is everyone so afraid of failure? I've failed, more than a few times, so what. I've been married 20 plus years, if we make it to 30 and then divorce...it's a fail.

And as unlikely as it is that an impulsive marriage will work, sometimes they do. Maybe that's even better. If you're dating for 10 years and you're saying " oh but I love our life the way it is ", everyone is laughing at you. Not that you should care, you shouldn't but you should know that it's time to cut your losses.

And that camp, is it still a camp and if not, why the cabins and a carousel and a Ferris wheel? Oh it's a resort, with Paul Bunyan. That makes sense. Btw, the lead actress is 38 yrs old, a few years past having kids someday. Is it fair, no, but it is biology.

Annoying movie that clearly succeeded in pushing some if my buttons, I won't be rewatching it. I'd rather watch Midsommar again.

Boring
cteska-6490721 September 2022
Not a funny movie at all, just straight up cheesy. The acting wasn't great, which makes the "known" celebrities look horrible. I mean actors from The Boys, Spin City, etc. They break up, get upset when the other is enjoying themselves, act a fool, blah blah blah. I don't know how this managed to get a 5 out of 10 in the ratings. I tried to laugh, I really did, but basically impossible. Don't waste your time when looking for a movie for family night or date night. Already gave it a thumbs down on Hulu as well. If you're going to spend money and time on a movie, at least make it something worth watching.

At last! A film about the ending of a relationship where there is no "bad guy" or "bad girl"...just two people who care deeply about each other but are heading in different directions. Solid acting and directing. Kudos to all!

A non-Romantic Romantic Comedy
mjbeva25 April 2021
You are witness to the lead characters with the turmoil in their lives due to the challenges of a relationship ending. At the same time you are introduced to the juxtaposition of true love between some crazy and yet extremely hopeful and endearing supporting characters. It all makes for a charming story about love, communication( or the lack there of) and the need to be true to oneself. There are creative laughs along the way and the characters stick with you.
