Rating (out of 5): **
What a collection of talent is gathered here: writer/directorJoe Maggio, who gave us the wonderful Virgil Bliss (2001) and the interesting Paper Covers Rock (2008); a cast of indie pros like James Le Gros, who’s coming up on a 30-year career of mostly independent film and TV, in which he’s always good and often charismatic; Joshua Leonard, so different here from his work in last year’s Humpday; the lovely Amy Seimetz, currently on a roll, after Alexander the Last, Tiny Furniture and Open Five; and producer/co-starLarry Fessenden, who’s always fun to watch ( I Sell the Dead, Wendy and Lucy) and whose production company Glass Eye Pix has given us some wonderful little “scare” movies of late. The result of all this talent blended into a chef-gets-revenge-on-food-critic thriller (in which even Mario Batali makes an appearance) is the disappointing Bitter Feast.

Chicago – New York filmmaker Joe Maggio is fascinated by the pursuit of redemption, particularly in stories featuring characters who may not entirely be worthy of it. His 2001 debut feature “Virgil Bliss” followed a man fresh out of prison as he attempted to build a new life. Maggio’s 2008 drama “Paper Covers Rock” told the story of a suicidal mother who fights to maintain custody of her daughter.
The darkly satirical thriller “Bitter Feast” marks Maggio’s darkest tale to date. Redemption hardly seems possible for vitriolic food blogger Jt Franks (Joshua Leonard), as he finds himself held hostage by Peter Gray (James LeGros), the self-righteous yet deranged celebrity chef whose restaurant he panned. Gray acquires delicious revenge by forcing Franks to cook various dishes to perfection…or else. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Maggio about his own thoughts concerning modern criticism, the advantages and disadvantages of microbudget filmmaking, and the New...

A contemporary riff on "Misery" with a culinary twist, "Bitter Feast" may provide the first horror movie aimed at foodies. Director Joe Maggio ("Paper Covers Rock") makes his inaugural foray into the horror genre with a competent, familiar captivity narrative, resulting in less torture porn than food porn with ample amounts of blood. Established TV chef Peter Gray (James Le Gros) goes berserk after a pan of his restaurant by merciless ...

I’d already made three feature films - Virgil Bliss (2001); Milk + Honey (2003); Paper Covers Rock (2008) - all of them indie character dramas, when Larry Fessenden of Glasseye Pix called and asked me if I had any horror scripts I’d be interested in making on a low budget. I’m not a horror guy. I mean, I love movies and there are certainly many horror films that I’ve enjoyed, but the thought of actually making a horror film seemed a bit of a stretch. That said, I’d never turn up the opportunity to make a movie, so I lied, said I had a script that needed a week of polishing. For the next seven days I wrote furiously, Glasseye accepted the first draft and my journey into the world of genre filmmaking was underway. Below I detail the single greatest tip I would pass along to anyone interested...

When Sully suddenly “goes native,” he locks horns with the company CEO (Giovanni Ribisi) and his gung-ho commanding officer (Stephen Lang, in a wonderful, scenery-chewing turn from a long-underrated actor). Paper Covers Rock moves along at a slow and steady pace with each moment echoing in the void of despair created by the film’s protagonist. A combination of elements makes Paper Covers Rock an oddly sublime experience, but an eerie soundtrack and above-par performances can’t fix a story that ultimately fails to pay off in plot, though the emotional impact is genuine. Suicide may be a definite end to a life, but failed suicide can be just as devastating; it puts tension on personal relationships, further damages a person emotionally, and makes it hard to ever go back to the way things were.

We're sitting on a screener of the indie horror flick I Sell The Dead here at Reject HQ, but only because we're waiting for a dark and stormy night to break that shit out. Called the ScareFlix series (the brainchild of producer Larry Fessenden), the latest in the series might just be a groundbreaking film, and not just by ridiculously-low-budget indie horror thrill film standards. Joe Maggio (Paper Covers Rock) has written and directed his first genre film, Bitter Feast, starring Joshua Leonard (of indie staff favorite Humpday) and James LeGros (The Last Winter). Making the movie for $16.50 and a pack of Jujubees, Bitter Feast is the first feature to be shot on a Dslr camera. As far as anyone knows. (And recording over your little brother's junior high graduation with your girlfriend's drunken rendition of "The Humpty Dance" doesn't count. Unless you'd like to submit it to Larry Fessenden as the missing link of the ScareFlix...

Concluding our interviews with the filmmakers behind three upcoming horror films being co-produced by Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and Mpi Media Group (start tracking back through the previous stories here), we now come to Bitter Feast and writer/director Joe Maggio. Although Maggio, unlike his Glass Eye stablemates, is a newcomer to horror, he’s an established indie filmmaker with the well-received Virgil Bliss, Milk And Honey and Paper Covers Rock to his credit, “and I’m very excited to be working with Larry and Glass Eye,” he tells Fango.
Bitter Feast will be the first of the Glass Eye/Mpi trio to go before the cameras; shooting begins late this month, and Maggio explains the storyline: “James LeGros [from Phantasm II and Fessenden’s The Last Winter] plays a mad chef who kidnaps a food blogger whom he believes has torpedoed his career. If you're anything like me, then you like fiddling around with the buttons on your cable remote. It used to be that you Knew of all the options your remote could provide, but nowadays I have cable channels and VOD options I never knew existed. So a little while ago I clicked on a button that said IFC Festival Direct, which delivered unto me a pair of options: IFC Showcase and IFC Midnight. Yeah, try and guess where I started.
I saw a few familiar titles: Left Bank and Sauna, both of which I saw (and liked) at Fantastic Fest '08, as well as well-reviewed genre fare like The Chaser, Zift, and a Brit import called Hush that I may watch this very afternoon. Also on the docket for IFC Midnight: the indie thriller Dark Mirror, a gory South Korean offering called Cadaver, and a Dutch psycho story called Fear Me Not.

Chicago – Most film fans don’t have the time, money, or connections to get to film festivals in their own city, much less ones that take place out of town. The festival circuit has created many an independent film hit but most of them don’t make their way to even Chicago much less the small towns of America. Now you can bring the film festival experience home with IFC Direct.
IFC Films’ On Demand channel has a particularly notable series this month called “IFC Festival Direct & SXSW”. The series of films available on IFC Direct On Demand creates the first-ever nationwide on-demand film festival experience, bringing the South by Southwest Film Festival home to people who would never get a chance to go there. A select group of five films that screened at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival will be simultaneously available in 30 million homes and virtually all major U.

When producer Thomas Woodrow began debating the ideal launchpad for his movie "True Adolescents," he ran through the usual festival suspects: Sundance, Cannes, Toronto and Telluride.
But Woodrow decided to premiere his $1 million comedy featuring Oscar nominee Melissa Leo at South by Southwest, a fest that until recently was known as an afterthought to the powerhouse music event that runs alongside it.
Sure, "Adolescents" is music-oriented, aimed at the same young, hip audience that flocks to Austin each March, and its star, Mark Duplass, is well-known locally.
But more importantly, "the fact a golden handful of distributors who are potential partners are certainly going to be there made it the obvious choice," Woodrow says.
His decision to go with South by Southwest (SXSW or "South By," as it is known) reflects the increasing relevance of the fest heading into its 16th go-round, which begins today and runs through March 21.

More Sundance coverage
Expanding its VOD offerings, IFC Films is partnering with the South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival to present five movies on IFC Festival Direct simultaneous with their appearance at the March film festival.
Joe Swanberg's "Alexander the Last," which is having its world premiere at SXSW, will be the first film to have a fest premiere the same time it becomes available on-demand.
In addition to "Alexander," produced by Swanberg, Noah Baumbach and Anish Savjani, the other SXSW titles bound for Festival Direct are Javor Gardev's "Zift" and Matthew Newton's "Three Blind Mice" as well as two films that played SXSW last year and are set for encore screenings this year: Barry Jenkins' "Medicine for Melancholy" and Joe Maggio's "Paper Covers Rock."
