A very interesting start to what I am sure will be a very interesting series. There were some bizarre goings on, by which I am not refering to the story but rather plot elements that didn't make much sense. Namely why did the dry-land inspector plug in the memory stick to her laptop while still in the military base? Very odd thing to do.

After watching this first episode of the series I have to say I am very intrigued. The episode is well made and seem to start off a cool story that will be interesting until the very end. Can't wait to keep watching.

Warning: Spoilers
While this is an excellent cop drama, after having watched "How to command a Nuclear Submarine" on Amazon very recently, the issue of how a trawler came to be snagged was dealt with explicitly. The caution that submarine commanders take when trawlers are around was demonstrated when one training exercise was suspended and the sub surfaced because they were worried about a nearby trawler. No way would a modern submarine commander ignore that, even if they were being "shadowed".

And why is a civilian police officer investigating? The Royal Navy has its own police force, whose website states they "provide a wide ranging policing and investigative service to the Royal Navy at home and abroad, including a global reach criminal investigation capability, operational detention in the maritime environment (and) the exploitation of evidence at sea."

As well as having the investigative capability, they have the military background and command structure.

Pretty awesome.

DCI Silva is sent on board HMS Vigil, a submarine, to investigate an unexpected, bizarre death.

I hope the rest of the series is of this standard, this first episode is pretty epic. One of the best produced things I have ever seen on terrestrial TV, amazingly well made.

One of my all time favourite writers, you can spot his hand in this straight away, it's slick, it's loaded with intrigue, and has a massive surprise, eight minutes in, I wasn't expecting that.

Suranne Jones was awesome, wonderful also to see Endeavour himself in a different role, he's such a talent.

A claustrophobic rollercoaster, this was mind blowing, 10/10.

Episode 1- love it!

Saw few bad reviews and I understand that this series is not showing exactly how it supposed to look an submarine or it's peoples costumes but at the end of the day it is a fictional story.

I don't have any ideas about the submarine life and how is supposed to look like, however since the first minute I've enjoyed and I did not want to loose any detail. It was just intriguing the whole time , the events, conflicts, characters, flash-backs, colours, the atmosphere. I am looking forward for the next episodes.

Suranne Jones acting is delightful also looking forward to seeing Rosie Leslie acting more !

What a treat!

Just watched the first episode on bbc.

This is going to win something.

It's fresh, exciting, fast, intelligent.. and with an amazing cast that seems to get enough space to deliver some great acting.

Can't remember if I even breathed.. Anyway. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Not even able to say something subtantial about it. Still recovering.

But going to watch it again immediately!

Needless to say i can't wait to see the rest!

Episode 1

Submarine dramas can be a cracking claustrophobic ride if you get it right such as The Hunt for Red October.

It can bristle with tension. Get it wrong and it will give you that sinking feeling.

The first episode of Vigil kills an important guest star in the opening minutes.

DCI Amy Silva is sent into a nuclear submarine and it becomes clear that no one wants her there. Despite the cold shoulder she believes that Craig Burke was murdered.

Back on dry land, Silva's colleague Kirsten Longacre is not keen on cooperating with the Navy liaison officer. She investigates Burke's background and finds out that he had been seeing an anti nuclear protestor and Burke had left behind a memory stick.

Vigil is certainly not a waterlogged drama. There was a lot of tension from the off. The crew of the Vigil were being shadowed by something unknown which dragged a crew of a fishing boat to their deaths.

It seems there is more than just a murder for Silva to investigate.

Very gripping first episode

What can I say - a very gripping first episode. All the subterfuge, the deception, wonderful. Cannot wait to see what Burke will reveal in his video, what is the backstory with DCI Silva, and what will be up with Longacre.

Vigil.
bombersflyup1 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Solid acting and competently done, but not exactly compelling. Part of that's indifference towards the lead and missing bits and pieces because of the dialect and sound. Joseph from the "The Beach," with at least 3 "Game of Thrones" cast members. Would be wanting to get the most out of those costly GoT salaries. Silva: "But we're not at war." Newsome: "We're always at war."

[8.5] Depression, claustrophobia and super closed spaces - a dynamite mix

Warning: Spoilers
Very well-made pilot with gripping and thrilling atmosphere, events and happenings since its first few minutes. Superb depiction of events and "life", especially in the submarine.

Although, what is the purpose of a "civil" police investigator in a fictional series' military sub, I do not know. Yet!
