At the motorcycle show, Shawn is disappointed that they don't have the bike from Blue Thunder (1983). Gus corrects him (it was a helicopter). Blue Thunder was directed by John Badham - just like this episode.
Shawn lip-reads a vital clue in a case of staged accidents involving daredevil Dutch "the Clutch" Jenkins (played by Jeff Fahey). However, he misreads several words as "purple camel lawnmower man," a inside joke referring to Fahey's starring role in 'The Lawnmower Man (1992)'.
In the credits, Joshua J. Ballard is listed as "Not Gus". Ballard was the unnamed kid in the flashback that Shawn was going to jump over, possibly referring to the fact that Gus would typically fall victim to Shawn's antics.
Spot The Pineapple: Shawn and Gus are walking through the carnival midway while a man carrying a blow-up palm tree with a Pineapple hanging from it walks past them.
Shawn introduces himself as "Die Hard" and Gus as "Die Harder". He then says they have two other guys in their crew but they're not as good as them. This is a reference to the (as of 2008) four Die Hard movies.
