Lee Marvin grew up with an adventurous streak and enlisted in the USMC Reserves when he was 18 to fight in WWII. He was wounded in battle twice and had to undergo over a year of medical treatment in naval hospitals. He was awarded several military medals for his service, including the Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC).
