A nice summary on Kafka's life and work.
Here's a quite interesting documentary on the life and work of Czech writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924), famous for his universal works such as the great "The Trial" and
"The Metamorphosis". For those who know his work and stories about his life, all classical elements that seemed taken from a movie (such as Kafka's letter to his best friend
Max Brod asking to burn all of his manuscripts so they could never be published yet Brod ignores the request and makes it all available to the world), it might be quite weak
and without much novelty. But for those who never heard of him or are a little curious about the man and his process of writing, this documentary is a nice view to discover
plenty of great things about him and you'll end up curious about his other novels and short stories (I liked the description of "Amerika", here presented as a German play
performed at the time this film was made).
Gathered here are the many elements from his own universe and life that inspired his writing, his conflicts with his father, his failed relationships and engagements with women, his opinion on many different topics. The little that I didn't know about him was that he was a big fan of movies, he was a regular attendee in cinemas, but quite understandable since movies were a fresh thing at the time he lived - and I wonder if any of those old silent films was important for his creation that includes horror/sci-fi elements such as the insect transformation in "The Metamorphosis" and why not the chaotic waking up moment of Josef K. In "The Trial"). And the film presents him more sociable and humored with a small group of friends rather than the overall view presented of him as depressed and disconnected from the world (which is also true in a way).
It's a sweet short project that actually made me want to go back to Kafka's writings, it's been a long time I haven't got in touch with anything of his - the last one was a collection of short stories of which I don't have any memories, and it didn't impressed me with anything. I still wonder why the movie industry around the globe hasn't made a biopic about him since he's such a fascinating character and one with many great real life stories even though the majority of those are quite sad. Ok, the closest we ever got from him was in Soderbergh's "Kafka" (1991), which wasn't a cinebiographical movie and it's a mere experience where there's a public servant who happens to be named Kafka who also happens to be a public worker by day and a novelist by night who suddently gets involved in an intricate and mysterious terrorist plot where elements of Kafka's fictional world is brought to life. Helluva of film by the way, but I still want to see some actor playing him in a very dramatic manner, one of those typical Oscar winning roles. 8/10.
