- William Holden's biggest bane in life is alcohol. Not only that he killed a man in Italy in a drunk-driving incident in 1966, but intoxication also caused his own demise 15 years later. An investigation concluded that while inebriated, he slipped on a rug, lacerated his forehead, and bled to death in his apartment where his body was found four days later. - William Holden was one of the most bankable stars in the 1950s with a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies in the said decade. Beginning with the 1950 film noir Sunset Boulevard, followed by his Academy Award Best Actor-winning performance in the 1953 comedy-drama Stalag 17. He was also a scene-stealer in the 1954 rom-com hit Sabrina and a stand-out in the 1957 epic movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.
