A bigger boat, without cup holders.
addisonarthur2 June 2020
Now, before you come at me thinking "7? Why only a 7 if you enjoyed it so much?", Hear me out. I played Maneater on PS4, I bought it full price at launch, and 100% completed it. The game is quite fun, but still disappointing.

Pros: +Satisfying violence. +Fun mini-bosses (Apex Predators). +Chris Parnell. +Interesting collectables. +Arcade style battle system. +Shark/Ocean facts. +Fun mutations/powers.

Cons: -Short overall playtime. -Lack of playable sharks. -Only 3 collectable "gear" sets. -Repetitive missions/fights. -Little-to-no replayability.

I had so much fun playing Maneater, and they utilise Chris Parnell's narrative ability very well in this game. Overall I felt disappointed, but still satisfied with my $60AUD purchase. The story did not last long, but it was exactly what was advertised and I didn't expect anything crazy from the dev team. I do hope they release future DLC or even another title, because it would be a lot of fun playing again as different sharks, or even just adding new gear sets.

This video game is worth fishing for. It's fun to play.
ironhorse_iv20 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Although, it's not as unique as people make it out to be. Much like the 2006 movie inspired video game 'Jaws Unleashed', 'Maneater' also has the player roam third person perspective freely feeding on other animals and humans as a large shark, destroying everything in its path in their near open world. Just minus all the glitches, freezing up and camera problems that "Jaws Unleashed' had. For the most part the game also had the better revenge story. However, the abrupt ending involving the Cajun fisherman "Scaly Pete" LeBlanc (Voiced by Carlo Mestroni) was a bit disappointing. The story felt a bit unfinished. It seems like they wasted a perfectly good subplot involving Pete's conflict with Kyle (Raphael Grosz-Harvey) over not wanting to continue into the family business and the traditions that come with it due to morals. That part of the story could had really added more emotional depth and fine fitting drama that was somewhat missing. Hopefully the sequel would explore that with Kyle and the Mega backstory a little more. Because without it, the be kind environmental message is a bit lost between the comedic fun no guilt hunting blood and guts. Regardless I still love the great sense of humor even if developers Tripwire Interactive didn't make the overall story of 'Maneater' take itself too seriously. One of the highlights is the unseen narrator (Voiced by Chris Parnell) whom also host, the in-game reality TV show about the subject of hunters fighting against marine life. I like that he spits out semi humorous exposition or not so accurate animal facts triggered by the player's actions as the shark. Often breaking the fourth wall and urging the gamer not to think too deeply about the biological inaccuracies of random out of place animals being in the gulf coast, large fishes being able to breach along with having sonar and the surrealism of toxic mutagenic helping you rather than causing your demise. I also dig that he's constantly making snarky remarks about oceanfront citizens of Port Clovis and their mistreated abuse of the gulf coast. Some of the jokes are really funny and clever; others fall flat. Nevertheless, I really love all the witty references nods to famous movies and television shows from him. According to the developers, in order to keep the dialogue fresh, Parnell has recorded many different lines solely dedicated to any situations that the gamer choose to play in the seven ocean zones as they move from pup to leviathan levels through eating sea creatures and paralyzed stupid AI beachgoers for grown, combating ranks of boats full of bounty hunters or apex predators for special skills, exploring sewer pipes mazes/underwater caves or seeking other additional rewards like looking for signs through its beautiful scenery waters. Along with that, there is also ton to see on land. So, it's always worth hysterical flopping around on the surface to see about gaining more points. Once the player gains enough, the bull shark must enter underwater grottos to unlock new abilities such as shadowy stealth, shock and awe powerful electric bolt or a born covered battering ram; along increasing in size. It only then that the main story will come back and continue its too short game plot. As for the game mechanics. It's a mixed bag. I like that the game starts with all the upgrades, only to take it away for you to build yourself back to that level. While somewhat limiting at first as you can barely jump. It's quite easy to reach that mark by 1.5 of the way though the game by farming. Swimming long distance is also not really that problem as they are fast travel points throughout the map. As for the combat mechanics, it is quite simple as with dodging attacks and charging feeding frenzy. Yet the whipping of enemies with the tail could had been better as it barely does damage to underwater opponent and often misses on surface enemies. The idea that you can use a swordfish as spear by tail whip is really hard to pull off with the lousy locking system. Most gamers just prefer using the charger due to the fact that controlling the camera is with the same input. Because of that, it makes certain boss battles not that challenging even with combine enemies as charger can also cause the shark to outrun pretty much anything in the water, allow you to regain health quickly by snacking on nearby prey. The game gets easier rather than harder as it goes on. Regardless "Maneater' still suffered from lack of combat varieties. Attacks animation get often repetitive. Despite that, the game looks great. Everything was beautifully rendered for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. I love how the shadow of a big predator can be seen in the murky waters or boats moving above. The changes toward night and day is also nice. You can see the sun rises and falling behind the waves or surface level. As for the land. The background of the city is quite big and detail, especially in the evenings near the fairgrounds with the lights on. Along with the visuals. The sound effects and background music compose by Daniel James set the aesthetic mood very well. Near peaceful quiet in harmony at times when exploring and intensely stormy when battles are about to kick in. Overall: While this game might continue to feed into the perception that sharks attacks are common despite contrary to popular belief, most show little pattern of attacking humans as we tend to not provide much protein to them nor taste good. I still thought "Maneater' was a mega hit. I cannot wait for the sequel. Hopefully they will have more over the top genetically engineered apex predators like giant squids, prehistoric kaijus like Loss Ness monster or otherworldly Cthulhu like gods to the mix. In the end this is one game worth biting into.

Devour all humans!
vhoundfvr8 June 2020
Maneater, for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, is an insanely fun and addictive shark-RPG game; especially for avid shark enthusiasts like myself. Though that's not to say it's pitch perfect. The combat is flawed and disorienting, and you may encounter the occasional glitch. That being said, there are a lot of wide, beautifully-rendered areas to explore, a lot of different animals and people to eat, and a lot of ways you can evolve/upgrade your shark to become a more efficient predator. So if you like open-world RPG chaos games like GTA, but wish you could be an oceanic killing machine, I'd say it's worth the thirty bucks.

Were Gonna Need A Bigger Game
crazykingzx3 June 2020
At first I didn't really care for this game mostly it looked to complicated and boring, but after playing I was pretty satisfied. I does have its flaws like the Ps3 rendered graphics which I do have to say look bad sometimes. Also the game could have a bigger open world game than what we got l instead. You only have 3 sets of cosmetics or looks for you your shark to use, plus you can only play as one species of shark. Other than that the game plays very well with lots blood and cool movesets. There are plenty of easterggs that are so awesome and that narrator is so dope. I mention its strengths and its weaknesses, evan though not a great game its still really fun to see another open world shark game.

Enjoyable game despite the unreliable controls
andromaro19 September 2022
This is an open world RPG where the player (tries to) control a shark and steadily climb the food chain. As you eat and grow you are able to move from swamp to lake to coast to open sea, finding increasing threats but also better ways to fight. The key is unlocking mods for parts of your body that give you special powers and make you look badass.

The main story is interesting because of the way it is told, making your enemy the main character, and you the shark actually the villain (one might disagree, but what's true is that nobody's innocent in this game). Being an open world RPG, you can also spend time exploring and doing secondary quests like hunts or boss fights, which unfortunately tend to be repetitive. The game is not too long though, and eventually you can witness the glorious ending.

On the other hand, I have to say that the controls are horrible, it's really hard to bite or float or dive the way you want to, so it can be really frustrating.

The best shark game
imartinovic-903104 July 2023
This game is a perfect for the sea lovers(in some kinda way). It's a perfect summer blockbuster that is meant to be fun and it is. Upgrading and traveling across the map finding and fighting predators of the sea is so fun. This game has such a good combat and mechanics,in the game kinda way It's not perfect tho, sometimes it is annoying and the plot is basic and that's why am saying that's it litteraly just for fun. DLC is okay Tho,it is still fun but kinda the same as the main game just some new predators and upgrades, and of course almost no plot or story. Well I certanly very enjoyed playing this game and that's why I gave it a rating 8/10.

Sharks Bite.
ryanwalton-3961518 January 2021
This game was always on my purchase list, however to my surprise as part of Januarys PlayStation Plus PS5 release, this game was the pick of the month. Overall, i enjoyed swimming around eating everything i came across, fish and human alike. The only downside is the lack of customization for your shark as well as the overall duration of the game. It took me around 10 hours to complete the main storyline including a lot of the side missions as well.

The sole purpose of the game is to eat everything you can, which if that is for you then this game provides that service.

Man Hunter review
califrog17 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The time trials are annoying and the dlc is flawed, for example the dlc just feels like if they mad everything have a green hue then said it's atomic then expected us to actually like that- it just feels lazy and boring. Main games good though. The bosses are fairly fun but once you fight more of them they get boring, especially the hunted ones. The story's also not the best but for this it doesn't really matter since your playing as a shark. I also think they probably should've made the game longer and with a bigger map and more shark skins, overall try it out see if you like it but most of what I'm saying is preference.

Fun for an hour.
RobTortureWright25 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Maneater came to Xbox Gamepass recently so I decided to give it a shot as it looked like it offered something different. Initially I went in not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised with the nice intro and the wacky style. Controls worked well, Gameplay felt good and it was mildly satisfying playing as a shark and eating humans, attacking boats etc. However 30 mins In I knew the exact gameplay loop that would continue throughout the game: eat stuff over and over, get bigger, take on bigger stuff. Thats fun for an hour but gets boring really fast when you realise all you're doing is pressing RT/R2 99% of the time and mindlessly eating small fish. At the point I reached level 5 "teen" I decided to take on a level 15 alligator and that really made me see that gameplay is pretty bland and repetitive. I took down the Alligator after a long and boring battle and got some "resources" for menial upgrades. After that I really had no reason to continue playing and levelling up because if I can kill much higher level enemies the challenge just isn't there anymore. It's something different in the gaming world, but that doesn't always mean it's good.

Main game 7, DLC 0
ljayhartmann25 June 2022
Main game is great save for not always feeling like a super sized, powerful megalodon. The dlc tho?.... Save your money. DLC is absolute garbage. $15 garbage at that. It uses broken mechanics, tasks that have absolutely nothing to do with the game or story, and the NPC's are on you like white on rice. Avoid the DLC, but the main game is fun for a while.

Amazing!!!.
dayton-w-price11 February 2021
This is what I wanted Jaws Unleashed to play and feel like, but unfortunately it was down right unplayable, how it got released unfinished baffles me. This game is freaking awesome I love playing as a mega female bull shark, getting some sweet blood filled water revenge. Truly epic game played In third person, it's everything I hoped and wanted in a shark simulator game, definitely the best In the genre.
