- After capturing the U.S.S. Discovery, Osyraa seeks a meeting with Admiral Vance while Burnham and the crew must overcome unimaginable odds as they attempt to regain command of their ship.
- Osyraa poses as an under-attack Discovery with blocked communications, and Vance decides to let the ship through the Federation's shields. Tilly finds that Zareh is among Osyraa's crew who has boarded the Discovery.
Burnham and Book use the courier's perilous trans warp network to reach Federation headquarters in time to crash land on Discovery before the shields close.
Osyraa sends Zareh to investigate, and he captures Book, while Burnham escapes unseen. Book says that Osyraa is expecting a pilot inside the ship and Burnham knows the Discovery better than him. Book is kept hostage with the bridge crew and Ryn, Stamets is interrogated by scientist Aurellio who plans to replicate Discovery's spore drive.
Eventually Vance figures out that Osyraa is not on the Viridian, but on Discovery. He points every available ship inside the shields onto the Discovery and ready to blow it up. Osyraa proposes a peace treaty between the Federation and the Emerald Chain to Vance. As a peace gesture, Osyraa releases the rest of Discovery's crew from the ship in shuttles but holds the bridge crew in its brig. Osyraa tells Vance that they are both out of Dilithium. Meanwhile Vance has a Spore Drive that he can replicate. And she has a scientific institution of the best minds in the Galaxy. She offers to replicate the Spore Drive, that will make the Federation alive again.
Burnham hides inside the Discovery's passages and manages to send a signal to her mother Gabrielle, regarding the hijack of Discovery by Osyraa. Stamets tells Aurellio about his partner Culber, who is still inside the Verubin Nebula. Aurellio tries to convince Stamets that Osyraa is a humanitarian and she even saved Aurellio's life when he was a kid. Stamets argues that Osyraa is exactly whom she appears to be. She threatened Kweijan with famine and extinction to secure the capture of Ryn and Discovery. Aurellio is stunned as he has never seen this side of Osyraa before.
Vance considers the treaty but insists that Osyraa stand trial for her crimes against the Federation, which is unacceptable to her. Osyraa wants Vance to give legitimacy to her mercantile exchanges and allow to set up embassies on Federation planets and bases. Vances says that Emerald Chain traffic goods that are used for enslavement of civilizations. Osyraa offers to outlaw slavery. She offers to follow the Prime Directive going forward and a 15-year withdrawal plan from the 50 or so non pre-warp planets that are already under Emerald Chain's control. Vance is impressed with the concessions that Osyraa is willing to offer. But wants someone independent of Osyraa to represent the Chain and for that person to put Osyraa on trial for her well documented crimes. Osyraa says that Vance is looking to the past, while she just drew an entire road-map for the future. Vance says that his people died for the principles they believed in and he cannot abandon that. Osyraa walks away.
The bridge crew escapes with the help of Book and Ryn, who knock out the guards with a coordinated attack. Meanwhile Adira, Saru and Culber are on the Dilithium planet, exposed to deadly radiation and nearing death with every passing minute. Ryn hacks into the ship and scrambles its sensors to confuse Zareh and his soldiers.
Zareh detects an extra life form inside the ship and sends his soldiers after Burnham. Burnham manages to escape by purging the soldiers into open space, by initiating a fire suppression system. Book & Ryn offer to stay behind in the brig and hold back Zareh's soldiers, while the bridge crew tries to take their ship back.
Burnham frees Stamets and safely jettisons him from the ship to prevent his capture, despite his wish to use the spore drive to immediately save Culber, Adira, and Saru. Burnham gives Stamets the Vulcan nerve pinch and forces him to evacuate the ship with the other crew being released by Osyraa. Stamets is livid at Burnham for giving up on Culber and Adira.
Osyraa returns to the ship. Aurellio is horrified when Osyraa kills Ryn, when he refuses to fix the ship's sensors that allowed the bridge crew and Stamets to escape. Osyraa than asks Aurellio to administer the truth serum to Book to find out what is inside the Nebula.
Tilly is met by ship's autonomous bots, who reveal that they carry the Sphere's data and intelligence. The Sphere data offers to help Tilly and take back the ship.
