A man's castle is his prison.
mark.waltz10 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Good location footage of an old castle is utilized for the plot line of this British quota quickie involving a reporter (Conrad Phillips) visiting a small town and finding that there has been a murder, and being held hostage along with Jill Ireland by the deranged Willian Hartnell inside the splendid old building. Earlier, Phillips and Ireland (long before she I'm better known as Mrs. Charles Bronson) has become acquainted when she scooped him to a story, simply because he was on vacation and wasn't ready to get the story in. Now they are partners in getting out of a jam, and as their situation begins to seem more serious, a romance begins to grow between the two as they strive to help each other.

At under an hour, this seems more like a British TV drama then something released theatrically, but it indeed did get a big screen release. Phillips and Ireland are very good together, and in his first scenes, Phillips is rather flip with some of the locals (which includes veteran character actor Charles Gray) over his desire to basically be left alone, so this does give an air of suspicion to what he is up to. The young Jill Ireland is quite beautiful and vibrant, and certainly could have gone very far on her own talent, showing a delightful comic timing in her scenes with Philips especially when he tries to kiss her on their first time out. For a cheap little film, they did a good job just taking a camera to the countryside and filming with the quaint locations they had around them. A lot is done with a little, and the viewers left satisfied. You get to see an awful lot of this ancient building which seems to be the location where many great stories took place.

Minor But A Fine Hartnell Performance
boblipton25 September 2023
Newspaperman Conrad Phillips is vacationing when he encounters Jill Ireland who's trying to make the leap from ladies' features to crime. A man has been found dead, and the two of them track down the site of the murder to a nearby castle's moat. When the police give up, all the other reporters follow them, but Miss Ireland has a hunch: she thinks the man was murdered by someone who was looking about the castle, and will return. Phillips goes with her and they discover William Hartnell with a gun. He holds Miss Ireland captive while he sends Phillips on errands, preparatory to fleeing.

There are some subplots cut from this very short B feature, like smarmy Charles Gray and his desire to make of Miss Ireland something other than a reporter. The two leads vanish in the face of Hartnell's vicious crook; it's quite a performance in a very minor crime film.

Not always logical but fun

Warning: Spoilers
Fast moving story entertains if you don't think about it too closely. Rival reporters representing different newspapers "meet cute" and quickly form an alliance to determine the cause of mysterious goings on at the local castle. Faster than you can say murder, they find a body and because the police give up too quickly (they're okay with unsolved murder after a few days apparently) the reporters stake out the castle and confront an intruder they suspect might be the killer. Faster than you can say Nancy Drew meets one of the Hardy Boys, the killer pulls out a gun and imprisons them. Clever as our reporters are, they didn't bring a weapon as our killer did. It gets a little silly as their attempts to escape are thwarted repeatedly, even though they've managed to wound the killer.

It's fun to see young Jill Ireland as a reporter and Dr. Who fans might get a kick out of viewing William Hartnell as a villain. In fairness to the slim budget, I'd rate this slightly above average. The acting is pretty good even if the story is weak. The copy I saw had some sound problems but the picture was fine.
