• Winston Smith : [while being strapped to the gurney with the electric pads on each side of his temples while O'brien walks in]  Look, I've confessed I am a religious believer, admirer of capitalism, a sexual pervert. What more do you want?

  O'Brien : Don't worry, Winston. You are in my keeping. For seven years, I have watched you. Now the turning point has come. I shall save you. I shall make you perfect.

  [O'Brien pats on Winston's shoulder and then turned on the electric circuit, as the electric shock surges through Winston, Winston screams in agony and in pain as the scene fades to black] 

• O'Brien : You're clinging to a disease under the impression that it is a virtue. You prefer to be a minority of one. You also believe that the nature of reality is self-evident, but I tell you, Winston, that reality is not external. It does not exist in the individual mind, only the mind of the state, which is collective and immortal. Do you remember writing in your diary that freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two equals four?

  Winston Smith : Yes.

  O'Brien : [holds up four fingers]  How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?

  Winston Smith : Four.

  O'Brien : And if the state says this is not four

  [moves his finger across his four fingers holding hand, indicating an extra space for a fifth finger] 

  O'Brien : but five, then how many fingers?

  Winston Smith : [looking at O'Brien's fingers]  Four.

  O'Brien : [turns on the torturing device and showing Winston his four fingers while Winston goes into a painful seizure]  How many fingers?

  Winston Smith : [through the pain]  Four!

  Winston Smith : [as O'Brien increases the power of the torturing device while holding four fingers as Winston seizes extremely and painfully, shouting in pain]  Four! Four!

  O'Brien : [firmly]  How many fingers?

  Winston Smith : What else can I say?

  [screaming in agony while looking at O'Brien's fingers] 

  O'Brien : [still holding up four fingers]  How many fingers, Winston?

  Winston Smith : Five! Five! Five!

  O'Brien : [not convinced]  You are only saying that because you want to the pain to stop.

  Winston Smith : I want to see five! I'm trying.

  [whimpering in pain and agony] 

  O'Brien : [still not convinced]  Are you trying to persuade me that you see five, or do you really want to see five?

  Winston Smith : To see them!

  [O'Brien increase the power to 100 while Winston is going through an extreme seizure while looking at O'Brien's fingers holding and after a few moments, Winston hallucinates to see O'Brien's four fingers are no longer four, but five fingers. Concerned, O'Brien slowly turns down the torture device] 

  O'Brien : [still holding up four fingers]  How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?

  Winston Smith : [submittingly]  Five.

  O'Brien : [convinced while closing his fist]  We are not content with negative obedience, nor even the most abject submission. When finally you surrender to us, it must be of your own free will. Before we end the session, do you have any questions?

  [Winston looks at the torturing device, O'Brien turns it off] 

  O'Brien : It is switched off. Do you have a question?

  Winston Smith : [calmy]  What is two plus two?

  O'Brien : Whatever the state says it is. Anything else?

  Winston Smith : Does Big Brother exist?

  O'Brien : Of course he does exists. The state exists. Big Brother is the embodiment of the state.

  Winston Smith : Does he exists in the same way that I exists?

  O'Brien : [leans in towards Winston with a firm face]  You do not exist.

  [nod towards the guard in the observation room, the guard turns off the recorder. O'Brien prepares to walk out] 

  O'Brien : Want a vision of the future, Winston? Imagine a boot... stamping a human face... forever.

  [walks away while leaving Winston brainless and subdued, fade to black]
