- A star collegiate athlete is murdered. Mick tracks down the culprit, who is a vampire, but not before the police arrive to take them into custody. The culprit threatens to expose the vampire community if Mick doesn't find a way out of the situation.—Jesse Sanchez
- While attending the dedication of Hearst College's Sara Whitley Memorial Sports Arena, built with a generous donation from Josef Kostan, the college's founder, Mick and Beth have their fourth date (any event that doesn't involve a dead body) interrupted when star basketball player Dominic Brewer is found murdered. Suspicion has fallen on Josef's lawyer, Simone Walker, who was found standing over the body, but Simone has an alibi that she shares with Beth -- she was with Josef at the time, and he was feeding on her. However, Simone refuses to give this information to the police as it might lead to an investigation of Josef, which could expose him as a vampire. Another problem is that Dominic's managers, Jackson and Emma Monaghan, are also vampires. "Too many vampires mixed up in this," says Josef. Mick and Beth promise to find a way to clear Simone.
First on the agenda is to find out about Dominic's teammate Hank Bishop, with whom Dominic had a fistfight the night of the dedication. From Emma Monaghan, Beth learns that Hank was jealous of Dominic's success and that there was a lot of "bad blood" between them. Mick learns from Guillermo down in the morgue that Dominic died from a broken neck and that he had had sex with someone with B+ blood just before he died. Couldn't be Simone's blood, Josef says, because Simone's blood is B-negative. To prove his point, Josef bites her wrist and allows Mick to sample her blood...just as Beth walks into the room. "We were just having drinks," Josef teases. Needless to say, Beth does not think it's funny.
Next stop is to Hank Bishop's fraternity house to talk with him. When one of Hank's frat brothers denies that Hank is there, Mick can hear his accelerated heartbeat and knows that he's lying. A fight breaks out during which Mick gets hit in the face with the fraternity's sacred ass paddle ["Karma," says Beth], but Mick is finally able to catch Hank as he attempts to escape through a bedroom window. When it turns out that the B+ blood sample is from a vampire, Mick talks to Jackson to see whether he can identify a cheerleader that Mick saw Dominic with the night of the party. Her name is Lisa, and she's a vampire, so Mick pays her a visit, too. Lisa denies sleeping with Dominic on that particular day but informs Mick that Dominic was also sleeping with Emma.
Meanwhile, Ben has been interrogating Hank. Hank reveals that he saw Emma murder Dominic, "threw him around the room like a rag doll" and "snapped his neck like it was nothing." When Ben tells Beth that he's going to pick up Emma, Beth calls Mick to warn him. Mick quickly dashes over to Emma's office, but he's too late. Ben and the police are already there, and Emma is fighting them. Mick rushes in and subdues Emma while whispering in her ear that she's endangering all vampires and convinces her to go quietly. He assures her that they'll figure out the next step before she gets hungry and needs to feed. When Jackson, who has been married to Emma for over 150 years, learns about her incarceration, he goes down to talk with her. Emma warns Jackson that, if Mick doesn't get her out of there, she's going to expose Mick, his friends, and every vampire in Los Angeles. Armed with Emma's threat, Mick calls a meeting between himself, Josef, Guillermo, Logan, and The Cleaner. Logan has sent emails to every vamp in L.A., warning them to get out of town. But what to do about Emma? The only thing they can do, Mick says, is to break her out of jail.
That night, Emma is going to be transferred from the district processing facility to the county lockup. The plan is to hit during the transfer. Logan has been charged with hacking the city's traffic control mainframe in order to assure that the stoplights along the route will remain green. Guillermo is to provide an ambulance, stretcher, and a couple pints of blood, since Emma hasn't fed in over 72 hours. The Cleaner and her assistants are charged with creating an accident along the route to force the van to stop. Josef and Mick will be waiting there. They will extract Emma and carry her off in the ambulance. Unfortunately, no one informed the van driver of the operation. When he comes to the scene of the "accident", he simply turns on the siren and deviates to a side street. In order to stop him, Logan jumps in front of the van, which swerves to avoid him, crashes, and overturns. Mick and Josef then extract Emma as planned and carry her off in the ambulance. Later that evening, a tribunal is held. Emma is accused of treason for threatening to expose the vampire community and is sentenced to death. Jackson is allowed a few moments with her before the sentence is carried out. Emma and Jackson profess their love for each other, and Jackson decides to die with the one he loves. Jackson and Emma are then torched with a flamethrower.
Epilogue: While sitting in his office, Ben notices an envelope that has been placed under his door. The envelope contains a long list of names, including Mick St John, Josef Kostan, Coraline DuVall, Guillermo Gasol, Hank Motolla, and Dolores Maxford Whitaker. The names of Pierce Anders, Jackson Monaghan, and Emma Monaghan have been crossed off. As Ben peruses the list, he gets an anonymous phone call, informing him that the list is for his eyes only. Meanwhile, Mick stops by Beth's apartment to tell her about Emma and Jackson's execution. Beth informs Mick that she has decided not to pursue their relationship because they live in two different worlds, Mick not able to join her world again, and her not willing to join his right now. Wordlessly, Mick walks out the door but soon turns around and bursts back in. "This isn't about being a vampire or a human," he tells her. "This is about us and how we feel about each other right here, right now." Mick professes his love for Beth, they kiss, and the door to her apartment closes. THE END [Synopsis by BJ Kuehl]
