A different story from the fictional "Narcos:Mexico"

This is a different description of events and characters from the tale told in "Narcos: Mexico". In the fictionalized series,Gallardo was called "El Padrino", the Godfather, while here Fonseca is given that title. "Narcos: Mexico" tells a tale of nervous Mexican officials ordering the kidnapping of Kiki Camarena, using Rafa's men and those of Fonseca to grab Camarena against the will of Gallardo. The version of events given by the three witnesses has the three cartel bosses giving the order to take Camarena.

To me, it makes more sense that the Mexican officials initiated the kidnapping since the traffickers were ultimately subordinate to the government officials, but then, the Narcos series is admittedly fictionalized. Also this docuseries states more than once that the DFS is the creature of the CIA. The Narcos series skims over that detail throughout, only hinting that the DFS does favors for the CIA.

The witnesses are mostly credible though Jorge Godol seems to over-dramatize his telling of the events. Godol seems a little unhinged at times. The other two witnesses seem more credible to me. This episode and the whole series is pretty sobering.

What is consistent in the two series on this subject is the depiction of Camarena as somewhat of a wild card among the DEA agents, acting as though he feels himself in the right, though Mexico isn't his country aside from the fact that he was born there.

Photos of Kiki often show him with a wide grin that doesn't touch his eyes. Only with his family does his facial expression seem genuine, so his sense of over-entitlement as a law enforcement agent could be an assumed attitude, while he isn't the same way in his personal life. I'm having difficulty expressing that view, so I could be entirely wrong.

The statements from witnesses in this documentary, that DEA agents were taking money from the cartel is something the fictionalized series doesn't touch upon. More on that is forthcoming in the final episode.
