Larry Martin is delighted to see his younger Brother Philip return for a break from his army posting in Germany. Philip informs Larry he intends to cut the reunion short, as he has to head to Ireland to meet the wife of a friend of his that was run down by a large car. Larry bids farewell to Phil, who informs his Taxi driver his destination is St. Pancras Station, but instead changes his mind and heads for a hotel. At the hotel he receives a parcel, a book of poetry, and makes the acquaintance of the locals. The next morning he's discovered dead, with a suicide note.

I am a true fan of Francis Durbridge's work, both on screen and in print. This dramatisation, all the way back from 1963 begins so well, the way of intrigue and suspense spun, in a manner only Durbridge capable of. There are definitely changes from the text, none of which halt the enjoyment.

It holds up very well, it's nicely filmed, it's a glorious snapshot of 60's Britain, the shops, cars etc. all look fabulous. The DVD is a little grainy, as to be expected with the age of the material, more so then later adaptations 'A Game of Murder' and 'Bat out of Hell.'

A great start, you can't help but get drawn in. Part 1 8/10
