- Santa Muerte walks through the dancers at the Cat, and sees the Vegas, Fly, and Rio throughout the room. No one notices Santa Muerte, and she listens as Tiago tells Molly about Day of the Dead. He invites Molly to come and see the celebration for herself, the next weekend when it's held, and assures her that his family is ready to have her there. Molly asks if he's ready for her being there, and Tiago kisses her as an answer.
Lewis comes in and approaches Tiago, and tells his partner that Diego is dead and cops lynched him in Belvedere. He warns that the locals will riot when the news gets out, and tells Tiago to get Molly out and then get to the station. When Tiago says that he has his family to worry about, Lewis tells him that he'll get Molly to Tiago's apartment, and Tiago should get his family home.
A young boy comes in and tells Fly that Diego has been lynched, while Tiago tells Raul to take Maria and Josefina home. Tiago then tries to talk to Mateo, and Fly and Rio go up to the mike. Fly announces that the police strung Diego up and tries to calm down the crowd. Rio shoves him aside and asks how much more the locals need, and it will eventually happen to their mothers and sisters unless they fight back.
Mateo goes to the stage as Fly warns the crowd that if they fight back now, they'll end up dead or in a cell. He asks them to walk with him, with dignity, and they take down Diego and bury him--showing the city who they are.
When Fly walks away from the mike, Mateo and Rio follow him. The locals follow them, and they all go outside and walk down the street. Tiago shoves through crowd, going after them.
The Crafts are driving home from the movie and the boys sit in the back and talk about what they saw. Peter sees the Chicanos walking down the street toward them, and tells everyone to be still and lock the doors. Elsa takes Peter's hand in hers and outside Rio looks at Elsa.
Frank screams, and Peter instinctively puts his foot on the accelerator trapping one of the walkers between cars. Rio yells that they're running them down, and the Chicanos swamp Peter's car and ignore Fly's attempts to calm things down. Fly yanks Rio down from the car she's standing on and asks what she's doing, and Rio smirks at him and walks away. Meanwhile, sailors on leave come out of a bar and start attacking Chicanos, and fights break out.
A Chicano breaks one of Peter's car windows with a baseball bat, and a piece of flying glass embeds itself in Tom's forehead.
Tiago looks for Mateo.
Peter pulls the glass out of Tom's forehead.
Rio grabs Fly and leads him into an alley when he asks what she's done, Rio says that it isn't the time for peacemakers and stabs him in the chest with a knife. Mateo arrives as Fly collapses to the ground, and Rio says that the "king" is dead and hands the knife to Mateo, saying he's the new king. Mateo takes the knife, and Tiago enters the alley and sees Mateo with the knife. Three sailors beat Tiago, and Mateo runs over and attacks them. Rio joins him and the sailors run off. Mateo tells Tiago goodbye and runs off with Rio.
The next day, Tiago watches from his apartment window as soldiers secure the streets. Molly is there and tends to Tiago's wounds, and says that his family was kind to her. She says that she didn't know what to expect because she didn't have a large family, and she wished she had a sister to share a bunk bed with. Tiago finally says that the sailors would have killed him just because he was Chicano. He tells Molly that maybe he doesn't want to be her "exotic Latin lover", and tells her to find a white man to fuck.
Molly says that it has nothing to do with her and Tiago knows how she feels. Tiago tells her that what she feels impossible. He suggests that they go outside, holding hands, and see what happens. Molly says nothing, and Tiago tells her that they can't pretend anymore. She suggests that they go somewhere else that they can be together, Tiago points out all the things she does as Sister Molly, and how all the good she does will go away if she does. Molly just wants to save one person instead of the world, and Tiago tells her she can't do it for him. She says that she spends all her time trying to hold herself together, but she can't endure being Molly and Sister Molly anymore. Molly breaks into tears, saying she can't stop dreaming, and they hug. Tiago says that they'll disappear and Molly agrees.
The telephone rings, and Tiago reluctantly answers it. It's Lewis, who tells Tiago to meet him downstairs in ten minutes. When Tiago objects, Lewis says that Tiago has to come with him. Once Lewis hangs up, Molly tells Tiago to go and not worry about her. She asks to stay for a few minutes and says that she has a service that night, and they can see each other after that.
In his office, Townsends the newspaper declaring that martial law has been declared, and laughing in triumph. He tells Alex that things can't get any better, and Townsend eats his breakfast and says the future belongs to big, fat men. He figures it will all make him mayor and Alex agrees. Townsend gloats that he'll bring down everyone who looked down on him, he'll shut down anyone who opposes him, and he'll make countries that feel the same way as him... like Germany. Alex smiles in satisfaction.
At home, Peter lies next to Tom and reassures him that the boy will just have a little scar. Tom says that they hurt him when he didn't do anything to them, and moans that he hates them. Peter tells him not to hate anyone, because hatred devours everything else. Tom asks his father to stay with him because he's scared, and Peter agrees to do so.
Elsa is in the kitchen to the radio announcer announcing curfews, and Peter comes in and turns off the radios. She asks how Tom is, and Peter says that he's scared and will never know what it is not to be scared. Elsa says that children are strong and the boys will be happy tomorrow, and tells Peter that he'll have to make statement for the bundt. Peter refuses and Elsa points out that LA is under martial law and it's a political event. She says that they have to state whether they stand on the side of the whites or the "mongrels", and when Peter balks Elsa speaks in German, telling him to be a man. Peter tells her that he's seen what hatred does to children, and Elsa insists that she wants the boys to be proud of who they are, and have faith that a better world is coming.
Elsa says that she let the American soldiers use her body so she could feed her sister, they spit on her as they took her. She thought that she would never be proud again, and then Peter taught her to raise her head and be proud. Elsa tells that his country and her boys need Peter to be who he truly is, and gives the "Heil Hitler" salute.
Lewis and Tiago drive to Belvedere, and the soldiers stop them at a checkpoint. When Lewis flashes his badge, the soldiers let them through and he drives to the house where Benny's men are waiting outside the Vega house. The detectives go into the house where Raul is sitting with Brian playing cards. Maria and Dottie are chatting in the kitchen while Benny cooks. Benny starts to compliment the Vega family, and Tiago demands to talk to him and Lewis in private.
In the next room, Lewis explains that the Nazis know about Dottie's house and it isn't safe. They need to get Brian somewhere far away from the Germans, who are looking for him. Benny explains that they're going to take Brian to a private airfield in Baja and fly him to NYC, and Mr. Lansky will keep Brian safe. Lewis says that Brian is dangerous and sooner or later, he's going to develop something dangerous. Tiago wants to leave immediately for Baja, but Benny says that the plane won't arrive until that night. Benny goes to the kitchen to get a recipe from Maria, and Lewis goes with him.
In his office, Goss tells Kurt that Brian has to be somewhere. He tells Kurt to think like a Jew to figure out where Dottie and the others took Brian, and says that she would have taken him to family because Jews think they're safe with family. Kurt reports that they haven't found Lewis's son, either, and Goss looks at a diorama of the motorway. Getting an idea, Kurt suggests that Lewis is hiding Brian with Tiago or his family. Goss agrees and tells Kurt to investigate, and tells him to bring him Brian alive and kill the others.
At the Temple, Molly is preparing for her performance, while Adelaide reads over the script Molly has prepared. Adelaide finally says that it might be inappropriate, and they've always stayed out of politics. Molly points out that her mother will accept donations from anyone, and Adelaide agrees, as long as it keeps Molly on the radio. Her daughter insists that she has a responsibility to say something, and that the tanks in LA aren't right and she plans to bring comfort to her listeners. Adelaide tells her to say something about God at some point.
As Adelaide goes, Molly says that she needs to talk to her. She says that she's leaving after that night's show, and she doesn't know where she's going. If she doesn't, then Molly holds up her wrists and says that's what happens. Molly insists that it's not about Tiago, and Adelaide tells her that she can have her lover but not to leave the Temple. Molly says that it's Adelaide's ministry, not hers, and always has been because Adelaide never gave her a choice. Adelaide reminds Molly of all the good she's done, and says that she won't let Molly shirk her duties. Molly angrily dares her to stop her, and tells her mother that it's over and she should let her go.
Adelaide tells her daughter that she's tried to be strong for her but now she's lost her, and says that Molly is special to her. She talks about how God took her first four children so that she could have Molly, and she'd crush their skulls herself if it was the only way she could have Molly. Adelaide says that Molly doesn't know all she's done to take care of James Hazlett, and Molly asks her what she did. Her mother says that she made Hazlett "go away", but had help. Molly stares at her and shock, and Adelaide says that she had to have Hazlett's children killed for Molly' sake. Adelaide promises that she will always protect Molly like that and no one will threaten her holy work, and Molly is always hers. She tells Molly that they'll hear no more talk of her going away and leaves. Crying, Molly looks at herself in her mirror.
At the Vega house, Maria gives Benny her mole recipe. Dottie gives Brian some Yoo-hoo for the trip, and when she says that she isn't coming Brian hugs her. Dottie hugs him back, and Lewis tells Brian that they have to go. The men leave in a car while Dottie and Maria watch, and they agree that the "kids" break their hearts. Kurt is in his car and secretly follows them.
Tiago and the others drive Brian to the Baja airfield, while Lewis and Benny tell Brian that he's going to NYC where he can work in peace. Brian says that he plans to keep thinking about the bomb, and Lewis asks what bomb he's talking about. The youth says that he had a new idea about nuclear fission, and controlling the atomic reaction to focus its yield. When Lewis asks what the bomb could do, Brian explains that it could destroy an entire city and might set the atmosphere on fire. He says that he needs some time to work out the details, and is sure he can make the bomb. Lewis asks Brian if that's what he wants to give the world, and Brian says that he wants to give it and so much more.
As the congregation gathers in the Temple auditorium, Adelaide goes to find Molly in Molly's room. Molly is gone, and Adelaide tells Randolph to find Molly and he goes.
At the Vega house, Josefina stands on the porch and watches a police car drive by. The girl goes inside and closes the door behind her. Maria brings her a cup of coffee and asks her daughter if she'll stay the night, and Josefina says that she will. Josefina explains that she thought she would be different at the Temple. Her mother asks her to sit with her, and when Molly sits with her on Maria's bed, Maria holds her and says that it wasn't true when she told Josefina as a child that she'd always be safe. Josefina says that she knows, and Maria sings gently to her.
Lewis pulls over on the highway, and Kurt brakes to a halt behind them and turns off his headlights. Meanwhile, Lewis says that he has to take a leak and tells Brian to come with him because he wants to talk about something. Kurt watches as they walk away from the car and down a nearby hill.
On the beach below, Lewis points out all the stars in the sky and how beautiful they are. He invites Brian to look, then takes out his gun and shoots Brian in the head. Tiago hears the shot and sees the muzzle flash, and another shot echoes out. Kurt hears the shot as well.
Molly, wearing her robes, enters the baptism pool. Santa Muerte is there as well, and Molly sees her. Peter sits at his desk and takes out his father's war medal. He puts it on and looks at a photo of his two sons, then stands up and gives a German salute. After a moment Peter lowers his arm, crying.
Adelaide and Randolph arrive at the baptism pool and finds Molly surrounded by blood from her slit wrists. Crying, Adelaide enters the water and hugs her daughter's body.
The three men drive to a gas station to refuel, and Lewis hears a radio inside playing a broadcast about Molly's death. Tiago calls to Lewis that they're done, and Lewis goes over to the car and tells Tiago what happened. When Tiago breaks into tears, Lewis puts a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Mateo goes to a cemetery where the Mexicans are celebrating the Day of the Dead. His family is there and Mateo joins them, kissing Josefina on the cheek and hugging Maria. Raul and Mateo hug, and they look at the grave of Mr. Vega. Afterward, they talk and laugh together. Tiago is standing off to one side, and Maria goes over to her son. She hugs her grief-stricken son, then slowly dance as Raul, Mateo, and Josefina watch them. Mother and son join the rest of their family and drink in celebration.
When people leave the cemetery, Tiago remains behind and watches Mateo go his separate way. Tiago kneels at his father's grave, and Magda comes up behind him and traces one hand down his neck. She says that there will come a time when the world is ready for her, when nation will battle nation. She that not a soul will be left, and asks Tiago if he's ready.
The next day, construction crews tear down the homes in Belvedere Heights to clear a path for the motorway. The locals watch from behind a police line, and Maria and Raul walk up and see their house being torn down with the others. Townsend, Alex, Goss, Adelaide, and Kurt there and watch as well.
Lewis and Tiago watch the group, and Tiago says that they'll be coming for them. His partner says that first they'll come after them, and both detectives agree that LA needs them. Tiago says that it's about more than a freeway, and it's about population control. Townsend will put up motorways around all the minorities, and it's not the United States of America.
