It had to happen: I'd finally convinced my wife to go see a UFC pay-per-view event. "You've gotta see this guy," I'd told her: "His name's Georges St. Pierre, and he's, like, this real-life Bruce Lee!" We went, and were witness to what has to be the single greatest upset in prizefighting history: Matt Serra's win over Georges St. Pierre. Forget about "Ironed" Mike Tyson's loss to Jim "Gutbuster" Douglas: this was the real deal- a genuinely gifted athlete, at the top of his game, being unseated by an astronomical underdog. My wife had been impressed by one of the fights on the undercard- Roger Huerta's toe-to-toe slugfest with Leonard Garcia- but she'd been mystified by my shock upon seeing the main event. In the return bout, St. Pierre realigned the planets in their proper order by hammering Serra into resounding defeat. The bout with Fitch loomed ominously like another potential disaster: I'd never before seen the man lose, and he seemed to have every aspect of the game down. St. Pierre was confident before the fight, venturing that he'd been working on his power (as he had for the return bout with Serra). Needless to say, nervousness knotted my guts like a coiling viper. At the opening bell, however, St. Pierre (nicknamed "Rush" for a reason) launched himself at Fitch, took him down, and hammered him into submission. The bout went the distance only because St. Pierre chose to let it go the full five. I was frankly shocked at just how easily he handled such a topflight opponent. It'll be even more interesting to see what he does with BJ Penn if he decides to take Penn up on his challenge.
