Utterly Awful
mselayan8 December 2021
This is one of the worst films (if you wanna call it that) I have ever seen in my life. As long as you have the tiniest respect for the human struggle for freedom and basic rights, you will not be able to stand how far it goes to slander prisoners and their families in some of the most atrocious ways perceivable, at least as far as Palestinians are concerned. You will also notice they made sure the contrived feelings and tawdry drama are pumped into every scene to ingratiate this work with a wider, mostly unaware, base.

It is beyond me how this debacle can be nominated for any award besides worst film of the year.

Fake drama buried the truth
a_alarda8 December 2021
Some people make movies in the name of supporting Palestinians struggle under occupation, to make the movie go viral or to get nominations they lie, bend the truth, or deform the reality, the result is a sick movie that harm the just case of Palestinians and hurt the people who are already suffering the consequences of occupation instead of delivering their voice to the world with truth. This is one of the worst.

Produced to support Israeli Agendas against Palestinians
mostafa-twitt8 December 2021
This movie tries to implant wrong thoughts and assumptions about the Palestinians who are born through this way considering them coming from Israeli Soldiers not the Palestinians who are imprisoned in the Israeli prisons which lead to trust issues between the Palestinians as a community.

Amira: a true martyr
dinaraad-8510313 December 2021
This film has suffered a vicious campaign to drop its rating because it has been sorely misinterpreted by many as offensive to Palestinian Detainees. In the last week, a group of social media activists have taken it upon themselves to organise a pan-Arab/worldwide campaign to stop the film from being screened in movie Theaters in Jordan and else where, after it had been successfully screened in the Venice Film Festival , Katharge film festival Tunisia and even in Palestine, but after its screening at the Karama film festival in Amman, Jordan, it was accused on gravely undermining the strife of Palestinian political detainees in Israeli prisons, by addressing a very sensitive topic (the smuggling of Detainees sperms to make in vitro babies as a show of resistance to the occupation. The strange thing that most of the people attacking the film never even saw it. But I did see it, and I say in good conscience as a patriot that the film's intent is the absolute opposite. And it is a superbly made piece of art and drama that deserves to be watched.. Don't take my word for it.. testament to how gripping and worthy the film is, is the fact that it was chosen as the official selection by Jordan for the 2022 Academy Awards! (yes! The Oscars!) but after this controversy, it has been pulled.

The low rating on IMDB is the result of the call by the anit-Amira campaign organisers for people to go onto IMDB and give it a zero rating.

The film won three awards in the Venice Film festival and received a 7-minute standing ovation. So how it can be rated 1.6, is truly suspicious. Even more suspicious is how it can have 7.5k ratings, when it has not been released in movie theaters yet and only screened in 3 or 4 film festivals (it was recently pulled out of the Red Sea Film festival in Saudi Arabic by its filmmaker and producers out of respect for the Palestinian Detainees and consideration for their feelings. The Film's writer and director, Mohammed Diab issued a statement trying to clarify his honest intent at actually shedding light on the Palestinian strife and is working on trying to request a special screening and dialogue with the Detainees and their families for them to see for themselves that the film that has been severely misjudged and misconstrued and judge for themselves.

As someone who DID watch the film, I can say this: Amira is a heart-wrenching tale of a young Palestinian girl who grows up dreaming of going off on wonderful adventures with her father, whom she never ever had the chance to touch except from behind the prison glass... and probably never will, as he is a political detainee.

When the shocking revelation that the man she has idolised her entire life is not her biological father happens, after her parents decide to try and have another baby by attempting once again to smuggle his sperm out of the Israeli prison, (which is considered a form of resistance by Palestinians, stating that you cannot stop us from procreating, and making more Palestinians, even if we are behind bars) , Amira's world is turned upside down, and she begins the quest to find who her biological father is, and how that could be. This twist is heightened even more when the revelation of who her true father is happens... at which time Amira decides to take matters into her own hands to clear her name and her mother's name.

Mohammed Diab's gripping story line and brilliant filmmaking skill is world-class, as is evident from the fact that he went on to be the first Arabic director chosen to direct a Marvel movie, and the strong message about how devastating to Palestinian life the Israeli occupation is, the use of sound - and lack of it - the tension, the performance of all the A-list cast of mostly Palestinian actors... make this film a must-watch.

Forget the unrealistic rating, based on a wrongful campaign. Unfortunately now it has been pulled from every where, let's hope reason prevails and it gets to play again. If it does, make sure to go watch it.... and bring along lots of tissues.

Does not deserve the boycott
ovarob1020 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has been criticised for hurting the pride of the Palestinians and for falling short when approaching such an intimate and difficult topic such as the smuggling of sperm from jails and artificial inseminations. The controversy that it created led to a campaign against the movie and to many people rating it very low on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I think the scoring is undeserved and that it may contribute to hurting the Palestinian cause.

This movie succeeds in portraying the oppression the freedom fighters experience in Israeli jails. For many who know little about Palestine, this is a very informative movie and could have been useful for advocating purposes so I do not think that boycotting it was the most rational choice. The boycott action may contribute to portray the Palestinian audience as censoring artistic voices.

The movie has also been criticised for matters of representation, given that the director is Egyptian and many actors in the movie Jordanian. However the producer Hany Abu-Assad is Palestinian and the actor Ali Suliman is, so it would be false to say that this movie lacks a Palestinian "stamp of approval".

The actors' performances are good and the characters are easy to empathise with.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The father who is in jail accepts the tragedy of the situation and tries to make the best out of it, the mother is ready to sacrifice herself for Amira, who in turn is fighting with her inner self in order to find a way out of this trap. Interestingly, there is no villain. The movie manages to make us empathise even with the Israeli who is the cause of all this trouble.

Some stylistic choices were particularly good: the scene in which the father and the mother are having their last conversation and the sound is cut down was a particularly successful one.

Of course there are weaknesses in the screenplay: first and foremost, what is the motive of the Israeli guard? His act was immoral, but only at the end he realises how much harm he has caused. This could be seen as a metaphor for the situation of many Israeli today. Maybe they are not supportive of how their government treats the Palestinians, but they are responsible, because small actions such as voting for Netanyahu and Bennett led to tragic consequences for the Palestinian.

The ending is kind of a mess: Amira realises she does not want to revenge against this family father, but when she wants to go back she realises that the Israeli soldiers have cut her way out. She is trapped by her fate and the Israeli soldier seem eager to eliminate her. The Palestinians turn her into another martyr. The cycle of oppression is maintained. This could represent how the Palestinian cause is impossible to win.

Portraying the Palestinians as concerned with matters of DNA and vendetta, when the Palestinian cause is not about blood right, but the right to the land, seems also unfair.

One could say that the movie is not political enough, as it reflects with philosophical matters like identity and fatherhood. It also casts a doubt in what Palestinians perceive as a point of pride, as a symbol of a small victory over the Israeli occupation and apartheid.

Excellent Film About Palestine
eedinur31 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Amira may be the most controversial film presented in this year's Wisconsin Film Festival-not for Madisonians necessarily but for Arab people and, especially, Palestinians. Written and directed by Egyptian Mohamed Diab whose previous films were about pressing socio-political issues in his country, and played mostly by Palestinian actors, the movie centers around two women. Amira (Tara Abboud) is 15, one of more than 100 Palestinian children born to men who have been sentenced to long-term, or life in prison by Israel, and who smuggled their semen out to their wives. She is spunky, self-assured, and respected by her community. Warda (Saba Mubarak) is Amira's mother, who married the incarcerated Nuwar (Ali Suliman) in absentia, standing in her bridal suit next to his enlarged photo.

When the two visit Nuwar in the Israeli Megiddo prison (where a soldier asks Warda if she's married "to that terrorist" and Amira replies "You mean freedom fighter"), he tells them of an opportunity to have another child. That is where things start going awry, eventually changing forever the lives of all three and those around them and turning a tight-knit community into a dangerous place.

There is very little daylight or bright lights in the film and those who are not imprisoned are often framed with fence-like structures surrounding them. There are many mirrors and photographs, where the characters fantasize of other lives and seem to try and understand who they are, their relationships, and how others see them. It's mostly a very good movie with some questionable twists toward the end-but these don't take away from the weight of what is presented, and the way it is. The film has won six awards so far in various festivals.

And the controversy? The film has been the target of a pan-Arab social media campaign to reduce its rating and stop it from being shown because some people consider it offensive to Palestinian prisoners and undermining their ordeals by addressing the smuggling of sperm which offers them the opportunity to have children, an act that is understood by some as a show of resistance to the Israeli occupation.

Who's right? That's not for me to judge. Should you see the movie? Yes, absolutely.

some feelings
j_movie9 September 2021
In the first half, I thought it was a family ethics play. Later, I found that there was a compassionate social observation and chose a worrying topic. Through the experience of a young girl, a group of marginalized groups that are easy to be ignored are connected. The story is very wonderful and the entry point is also very good. Although some bridges in the second half are a little stiff in order to create drama, it is still a good work worthy of attention.

Ridiculous Movie
mkms10008 December 2021
Amira is a highly contrived, ridiculous melodrama seeping with endless implausible details that rob the story of any credibility it may have had. The biggest crime of the film though is its portrayal of Palestinian society.

A VALID REVUE
bugmesummore24 December 2021
IGNORANCE IS BLISS

The director is Egyptian, and is well known.

NOT Palestinian!

The movie is compelling and does not involve any politics whatsoever!

This is why it won so many awards, and deservatively so.

To say anything else is just false. It is just a MOVIE, not a documentary.

Even so, it is being attacked by radicals who wish to represent themselves as victims, while gaining much support. Lies and misinformation are unfortunate.

However, none who have given bad comments have seen the movie nor understands the director's point of view.

We all have freedom of expression and art is one in which we truly appreciate.

On the opposite end, they want to deny and mischaracterize the subject because it may be forbidden. (Yet they do it anyway.)

I give this movie 10 stars for the director, the actors and the storyline.

True or false, it is just a movie.

If you don't like it, watch something else!

Good Movie
mahmoudjsf17 December 2023
Amira 2021 delves into a harsh reality, shedding light on the lives of children born through smuggling, offering a poignant portrayal of their struggles. The film authentically mirrors the complexities of Israeli-Palestinian interactions, capturing the raw emotions and challenges faced by both sides. With a compelling narrative, it skillfully navigates the delicate nuances of this socio-political landscape. The cinematography immerses viewers in the harsh truths, creating a visceral experience. Amira 2021 is more than a movie; it's a powerful commentary on the human condition and the impact of geopolitical dynamics on innocent lives. A thought-provoking and emotionally resonant cinematic achievement.

DON'T WATCH IT !!!
qwe-121808 December 2021
This movie is disgusting. I totally do not recommend watching this or believing that the scenario of the movie would ever happen. It is a fake story over a very sensitive case that can actually effect many people in a bad way especially the Palestinian prisoners. Please do not watch or support.

Must watch, Masterpiece of middle-eastern film, great realistic drama
galibkhan-5791010 February 2023
I have never been interested in films in the drama category except for few ones. This movie is the most realistic drama film which I ever watched in my entire life. I watch movie a lot. It wanted to represent realistically a Palestinian family life. The thing is that it is getting bad review for some bold topic, but not representation visually. If you are a movie lover you will enjoy it. And I really paused each sentence to read the subtitle, it was this interesting. I was never bored, usually I skip 90% of drama films. Regardless your race, religion you will never regret spending time on watching this movie.

What a disgrace...
muosabkhalaf8 December 2021
This shameful movie is a disgrace to all Palestinian freedom prisoners and to the entirety of the Palestinian struggle and story..

It's truly infuriating to see a bunch of greedy lowlifes trying to bank of the suffering of every Palestinian family.

Our world is full of cowards it shouldn't be surprising anymore, but watching the depths that some degenerates will go to, to betray their people and do whatever it takes to look good in the eyes of the white man, blows my mind, seriously..

Bad movie with bad actors who don't know anything about movies and acting! The story of this movie is very bad and the way it is presented is even worse. I advise the movie cast to leave this industry and find anything else to do. You are not meant to be here.

At last a true representation of what is going with so called freedom fighters
uplink-208429 December 2021
The creators of this movie and the actors are very brave and are the true heroes of the Palestinian people. Telling the truth - this IS the only way how the fight for a freedom is done. Hope to see much more movies like this in the future.

It's the worst
yrtgqqxq7 December 2021
You might find this movie entertainment or good or something, but this movie had triggered lots of palestenians .

First, the topic that this movie talks about is very important and sensitive, also if there were any percentage that the operation could go wrong not as planned it wouldn't have been agreed on or made in the first place , so this movie is such a misleading and disrespectful one, if you care about other people's feelings you shouldn't watch it and you should rate it with 1 star These are our people who lost their lives because of this occupation and this is such an important topic which no one should say or deliver any false information about.
