Going to the Vampire Trial
claudio_carvalho20 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Bill kills Longshadow to protect Sookie and now he must travel to face a vampire trial. He asks Sam to protect Sookie since there is a serial- killer hunting her. Jason befriends Eddie but he does not let the vampire go. Sam gives eight hundred dollars for the exorcism of Tara. Detective Andy Bellefleur investigate the naturism camp in Texas and finds that Sam's parent have never been associated to the club. Sookie decides to spend the night in Bill's house with Sam's dog and she has a surprise in the middle of the night.

In this episode, Tara is convinced that she needs an exorcism to change her behavior. Jason has a long conversation with Eddie that tells him that Amy is a psychopath. But the most important, I believe that Sam's secret will be disclosed on the next episode. My vote is seven.

Humans...honestly, Bill. I don't know what you see in them...
Chalice_Of_Evil1 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I've got to agree with Eric there^. The characters in this show who're turning out to be the most interesting are the vampires (ie. Bill, Eric, Pam) and the people with special abilities (Sookie and Sam, for example), whereas the normal human characters are rather dull. This episode was at least more interesting than episode 8. The best stuff was at the beginning and end. Speaking about the beginning of the episode - whoa! Now THAT'S what I call a vampire death! Bill staking the vamp who was about to kill Sookie, then him projectile vomiting blood all over Sookie, then being reduced to a pile of gore on the floor was a pretty damn nasty/awesome visual (but poor Sookie!). This was the first time we've gotten to actually *see* a vampire get killed in the show - and talk about memorable. Again, it must be said, POOR SOOKIE! And then to find her cat attached to the fan, dead/decapitated, and having yet MORE blood thrown on her - what is it with this show and covering Anna Paquin in blood? They must enjoy it (sickos). Poor Tina! I'm serious, show, quit it with the animal violence! First comes possum drownings, and now cat decapitation? It's bad enough that we have to see dead possums all bloody on the ground and dead foxes being overrun by maggots in the opening credits of every episode.

Sookie's and Bill's scenes were, as always, the best bits. Jason & Amy, as well as Tara, were the low points of the episode for me (I could care less about Jason tripping out on V, hallucinating that he's swimming through a forest/screwing Amy nakedly in a forest. Jason - along with Tara - have become the most unsympathetic characters in the show for me). About the only scene I could stand Amy in was when she talked to Sookie outside the bar (at least she said she was sorry about Sookie's cat).

I was glad to see Eric and Pam get a bit more screen time (so I could get a better idea of their characters - as, previously, there'd been so little of them, I couldn't make up my mind about them one way or the other). They were both good in this episode, and I think I officially like their characters now. Pam's line to Sookie about there being vampire in her cleavage was classic! I also liked seeing Bill playing golf. Eric slightly annoyed me when he was hurrying Bill along as he said his goodbyes to Sookie, though. Bill really has gone through a lot for Sookie, to keep her safe.

What I loved/the best part of the episode was everything after Sam learned that Sookie had left the bar to head for Bill's. They really weren't exactly subtle about Sam being the collie (not that they had been *before*), when Sam disappeared into the bar and then the next thing we saw was the collie run by. I loved him going off to look after/watch over Sookie, trying to warn her with his barking, following her inside and upstairs and - this part really gets me - TURNING AWAY as she started to undress! That was just so damn great! Then she decided to name him 'Dean' ('Dean the Dog' - that amused me). What a shame her new 'pet' turned out to be...well...you know. I knew it had to be coming sooner or later, but that was the absolute BEST way for them to do the reveal (ie. Sookie finding a naked Sam lying in her bed where the collie had been and him being startled awake by her screaming his name). That was SO worth the wait! Possibly the best episode ending yet.

Oh, and great/appropriate use of the song 'Walking The Dog' during the end credits.

It's a bird...It's a plane...It's SuperPooch!!
skay_baltimore18 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most important lines so far:

Bill: "You do know that I'm not gonna let anything happen to you. That I am here for you. To protect you."

Sookie: "What if I don't wanna need to be protected? What if wanting to be protected makes me feel like the helpless little girl I used to be all over again?"

Those two lines are what totally differentiates True Blood from BtVS. Just about everything in BtVS is centered around Buffy's OCD need to protect everything and everyone around her -- notwithstanding the fact that she is "The Slayer". Even G-d allows people to make mistakes; so they can grow and develop and not remain perpetually dependent. BtVS totally drops the ball in that regard; True Blood knocks it out of the park.

Bill's response -- that all of the trouble Sookie is in is Bill's fault -- is baloney. And Sookie understands that, because she says to Bill that her trouble is the direct result of her choices. She gets it; even if Bill does not. This is the beauty -- and the maturity -- of TB.

Jason and Eddie have a heart to heart in which Eddie reveals how he ended up being such an out of shape vampire. He explained that whatever shape you're in when you get turned, that's pretty much the way you stay. He demonstrates a pretty high level of insight and compassion, and tells Jason to beware of Amy because she's a psycho.

Bill has to go before a council for having killed Longshadow, the vampire/bartender at Fangtasia. He asks Sam to keep an eye out for Sookie in his absence.

(Sidenote: I wonder if the use of the name Fangtasia is a hint that Disney impacts our perception of reality more than we are aware of, since that bar is part of a whole PR mechanism designed to push forth a more sinister agenda hidden behind an apparent mainstream (false) front.)

Sam gives Tara the money to have the exorcism done. Then he talks with Amy who tells him that Sookie has left early to go spend the night alone at Bill's. He leaves immediately to follow her but Andy is waiting outside to confront him about the lie he'd told about his family belonging to a naturalist group in Texas. He goes back into the bar, and the next thing we see is a dog running past Andy. (Sam pops into a nearby kennel...and out pops SuperPooch!!). The dog runs over to Bill's, Sookie sees him, names him "Dean", tells him to sleep on the bed with her, then in the middle of the night she thinks Dean is lying on her feet, and it turns out to be one naked Sam.

Ya know...when you read this stuff...you could easily conclude that this series is so off the wall there's no point in really watching it. You'd be wrong. Somehow...through the writing, directing, and acting...it DOES all end up working together very creatively and enjoyably. At least for this reviewer.

There's vampire in your cleavage.
lastliberal2 November 2008
This show just keeps getting better and better, and tonight's episode was the best yet.

Bill is in big trouble after killing another vampire. He thought he might get away with it, but off he goes to face a tribunal. he asked Sam to keep an eye on Sookie, and we find out something new about him. Yes, I guessed it, but it was still exciting.

Eddie is wasting away, but he and Jason had a really great talk about manhood. He also warned him about Amy (Lizzy Caplan). Now, what is that girl up to? Tara is finally going to get rid of her demons. With what Sookie now knows about Sam, how will the new Tara and Sam play out. Damn, that is going to be fascinating.

I really can't wait until next week as it is getting so exciting.

True Blood: Plaisir d'amour
Scarecrow-8830 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Bill commits a sin when he stakes Fangtasia bartender Longshadow who was responsible for stealing money from Eric and must stand trial with a tribunal of his kind. Killing a vampire for a human is unacceptable even if Eric brought Sookie in to find the culprit robbing him. Bill asks Sam to protect Sookie while he is gone. Sam goes out of his way to call to Tara's attention his feelings for her, even providing the money needed for her exorcism. Jason bonds with his and Amy's captive vampire, Eddie(Stephen Root) while she is away. Jason even admits to loving Amy while they are on a harmonious picnic. And, detective Bellefleur confronts Sam over his lie about the family being nudists. And, this episode ends with a startling revelation in regards to a dog allowed into Sookie's good graces when she decides to stay at Bill's home while he's gone. This episode is important, in my opinion, because it shows that Jason is mellowing towards vampires while chatting with one he has reluctantly been helping keep a prisoner. This vampire tells Jason not to marry Amy, warning of her being a psychopath. I think we are noticing that Amy is not the godsend Sookie and others are convinced she is. And, there's this funny scene where Eric allows Bill a chance to say goodbye to Sookie and is passing out invites to Fangtasias to human customers in Merlottes bar! Ultimately, Sookie's life has taken a turn for the worse because of her love for Bill. The moment she locked eyes with him and become "glamoured" by Bill, her life would never be the same, for better or worse. You just can't help who you love even if it costs you so much, and I think that's the vital ingredient which makes TRUE BLOOD so interesting, the consequences of forbidden love. I think Alexander Skarsgård's Eric Northman is starting to emerge as an important character and will seem to be a source of misery for Sookie and Bill's relationship going forward. No matter how hard Bill tries to disassociate himself from his vampire kind, they always return to disrupt potential happiness with Sookie.

Further revelations
Tweekums8 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This series continues to impress, the opening is one of the most spectacular and gory of the series so far when Bill takes drastic action to protect Sookie from a vampire attack, this action will have repercussions as vampires don't consider the protection of a human to be justification for killing one of their own. Meanwhile her brother Jason is having vampire troubles of his own; having kidnapped a vampire with his hippie girlfriend Amy he appears to be far more sympathetic to his plight than Amy is and when they are alone the two have a chat which in other circumstances might be considered friendly.

Sam, who had been somewhat suspicious in earlier episodes proves to be generous when he gives Tara the money she needs if she is to see the exorcist, this generosity isn't the biggest reveal about Sam however, the final scene will undoubtedly lead to Sookie asking him some questions in the next episode, the nature of which I won't spoil here.

As always the acting was good, I was particularly impressed with Ryan Kwanten who plays Jason, a character I didn't previously like and Stephen Root who plays Jason's prisoner Eddie the gay vampire.

50:03 ???? 😨
ebarlow-2807330 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was really thorough and well written. The character development for Jason and Tara and Sam was amazing. Now for the real reason I created an account and now writing a review for this certain episode is for this reason alone: What in the world is the translucent humanoid shape in the house as Sam and Sookie are walking to the right and then up the stairs???? Even the music gets very suspenseful at 50: 03... Am I literally the only person that caught this??? And if I'm not, can someone explain the significance of this invisible person

S1.E9 - Really Enjoyed It [9/10]
panagiotis19932 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E9) My Live Reaction / Review for True Blood Season 1 Episode 9 ''Plaisir d'amour''. Episode 8 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Jason and his girlfriend keeping that vampire as a prisoner to take the V is really messed up. Who killed Sookie's cat? Tara's thinks that she might need an exorcism too? Im glad that the exorcism worked for Tara's mother though. When will Jason let that poor vampire go? So vampires have their own laws and now Bill will face the consequences for killing another vampire? That's cool. I think that this dog is Sam. Yup, the dog was Sam. Overall a great episode, my rating is 9/10.
