When saxophonist Sam Bentley collapses drunk on the floor of the ferry bar he burbles "Nearer my God to Thee" - famously the final hymn played by the ship's band as the Titanic sank.
In Alan Plater's original novel, the Elks fly Jill and Trevor to Athens, where they are further assisted by Big Al and his friends in a "fracas in the Plaka". In the TV version, in the interests of economy, they go to Edinburgh "the Athens of the North" instead.
