When Wheeler accuses the guard of being an inside man on the robbery and says the robbers hit him over the head to make it look real he responds by saying "Oh yeah, you got me Perry Mason". He is referring to a fictional character in a popular series of novels written by Erle Stanley Gardner, the first novel in the series being released in 1933. The novels were about Perry Mason, a Los Angeles defense attorney who was both a corporate and a criminal lawyer, his secretary Della Street and Paul Drake who was Mason's close friend and founder of a large private investigation firm who frequently helped Mason investigate crimes his clients were accused of committing. Mason was famous for only accepting clients he knew were innocent, he refused to defend someone if they were guilty and wanted Mason to try and get them acquitted. The stories often ended with Mason and his friend and private detective Paul Drake figuring out who the guilty party was and then getting them to confess in open court during vigorous cross examination. During the late 1930's and into the 1940's the novels were made into a serialized radio program, but the version of Perry Mason best known is the television series Perry Mason (1957) which starred Raymond Burr as Mason, Barbara Hale as Della Street and William Hopper as P.I. Paul Drake.
