The invasion of Crete by German paratroopers in May 1941. Defending the island was 30,000 British, Australian and New Zealand troops supported by Greek partisans.
Following the Allied defeat the Germans occupied the island. Cretan partisans waged a stouthearted guerrilla war but the Germans often exacted their revenge through brutal treatment of the civilian population.
