Off the Record (1934)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Decent, if rather strange, short from Warner has B.A. Rolfe at a party celebrating his 40th anniversary in the business. A photographer asks for a photo but the camera blows up, sending Rolfe to Heaven. Once there he must go in front of St. Peter and play some of his records. I guess this really was a tribute to Rolfe as most films from this era just features the musician doing a few numbers and that would be it. This film at least does a little extra by having the "story" thrown on but to be honest it does very little and actually makes the film seem more strange than cute. The music here wasn't too bad as we get a good version of Happy Days Are Here Again as well as a couple other numbers that I couldn't name. There are a few dance sequences thrown in but I wasn't overly impressed here. Fans of music will want to check this one out but others will probably be turned off.
