Season 3: Very strong final season with lots of great characters and throwaway moments
I wasn't really in a rush to watch this season since it was the third and final of this great show but, although it does sadly end, it does so with a very high standard which really only wobbles once or twice through all the episodes. Harry remains under pressure from the Channel 4 controller and the badgers now have their own reoccurring sci-fi story with weekly special guests – although it is always good to keep the A-Z of woodland creatures lined up in case they are needed.
In this season the running jokes are very good indeed; when the first episode ended with a throwback to a pound shop joke at the start of the episode I knew I was in the right place (4.61p for a peg). Many characters return (Gary the controller and Stoufer are must-haves for me) and generally the new characters work thanks to being so very random and never being overused; even Jonty grew on me, as Harry said he would. Harry himself really is channeling Eric Morecambe here – in particular his scenes in the special guest rehearsals, but just generally he has nailed a very light entertainment note which helps makes his rather unusual sense of humor a bit more accessible – something he then went on to do with even greater success for ITV (much to Gary's chagrin I imagine).
This third season is very funny from the opening offer from Channel 4 through to the series of twists and reveals that bring the season dramatically to a close. It is a shame there isn't more in this series, but it stands the test of time very well – something that not all surreal comedies can do, but this is fresh and funny from start to finish.
