One of the best history podcasts out there!

For any history buffs or lovers of Roman history Mike Duncan's The History of Rome is a must. Mike does a great job pulling the threads of history together; while keeping it interresting with occasional modern references, great story telling, but he is not shy to mention some of the good old ancient tales that might seem crazy, or taken from a fantasy book. Early Rome got plenty of that, and rather than dismiss them or not mention them at all, Mike may remain critical but try to explain why these stories appear so the listener may wonder and speculate what actually happend. Sometimes in history truth or fiction is hard to seperate and Mike does a great job intergrating the two while narrating.

He is precise, fact driven as much as history allows, but will explain things in depth if need be, say forexample why augustus was called augustus, when it changed, what's the meaning behind the name, and what in reality the regular Romans, friends, family, called Augustus in private and public, and to make clear when the transition from Octavian to Augustus did happend.

Only obvious negative is the audio quality in the early episodes which can be annoying for alot. If you should ever find the early, early period of Roman history borring, to vague, or fantasy like then I'd suggest skipping ahead, truthfully I was always fascinated with the Late Republic and Caesar and that was great at getting me into the podcast initally.

It seems to me the Romans had a huge impact on the west today, though the Romans are no longer, the influence in language, law, politics, warfare, culture, even religion, is what evolved through history to some of the fundamentals of society today can be traced from the Romans.

History class made interresting, but relaxing with Mike Duncan!
