Gimme Gimme: Krauss Returns to Human Interest Woes in Latest Effort
Writer/director Ron Krauss returns to the human interest vein that defined his last outing as director, 2010’s Amexica with a based on a true tale of woe, Gimme Shelter. Working with a notably high profile cast this time around, there’s certainly a genuine sincerity with the presentation at hand, which unfortunately can’t gracefully override its more manipulative moments in a tale that surely inspires empathy but works only because it is granted the ability to conclude with a rosy-tinted fairy tale glow.
Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Vanessa Hudgens) is a homeless, pregnant teenager on the run from her drug addicted and abusive mother (Rosario Dawson). With no one to turn to, she seeks out the assistance of her estranged father (Brendan Fraser), who is now raising a second family with his new wife (Stephanie Szostak) and has...

Chicago – The opportunity for a new film to also take up a cause is one of the advantages of the movies as mass art. “Gimme Shelter” is the based-on-truth story of a runaway pregnant teen named Apple (Vanessa Hudgens) who needs the titular sanctuary to give birth. Director Ron Krauss leads an all-star cast, including Ann Dowd (“Compliance”), who portrayed the real-life facilitator of the shelter for single mothers, Kathy Difiore.

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...
